Idk, a lot of players rave about Phil Handy, he’s got 3 rings as an assistant and has never been a head coach. Some guys aren’t a fit for managing a whole team, but might excel at certain aspects of it

prob because coaching positions are as competitive as roster spots, even more so considering there are only like 30 total and most of them are off limits. So you can have a good coach but just not get the job because there are better and then there are the politics. 99% politics and 1% other

Unironically, I wonder how much his looks play into things. Good looking people have a real advantage interviewing for most jobs and the NBA is an entertainment product after all. The average NBA coach is an above average looking older dude in my subjective opinion.

Aside from general “handsomeness” it also helps if you look the part. JVG and Adelman are some of the few coaches I can think of who really check neither box in that regard.

I think it’s because he speaks in an informal way. The only person who got away with this was Avery Johnson but he came off as kind of Southern and endearing. Sam talks like that Uncle who knows a little too much about the streets

I’ve often wondered and I have no clue, but I’d be willing to see him start his HC career in the same place he started his playing career.

The HC often needs to really push you, and on top of that, what the HC has done needs to create a curiosity/interest. So if the teams do well in a way that the HC gets credit for, then the staff tends to get the attention. At least from following the Grizzlies, that has been a track for hiring. Often it doesn’t work out. Spoelstra really pushed Fizdale, and that fizzled. Budenholzer really pushed his assistants, including Jenkins, and that went well for a while. Jenkins pushed Darko, and it seems to be doing good.

Also, being part of the Popovich tree, even several branches down, seems to get attention.

Other than that, yeah, interviewing ability may be a factor.

There are only 30 spots, so part of it is luck, too.

Ron Adams has been an NBA assistant for almost every year since 1992. Coached some great defenses in that time, but has never been a HC. some guys are just best as a #2 or #3. 

There are very few available jobs each year.

There are 30 teams and some are very happy. Spo is safe, Mazulla is safe, Kerr is safe, Daigneault is safe, Carlisle, Kidd, Finch is safe, Lue is safe and Spurs hire from within (and Mitch is safe). 21 left.

Nurse, Brown, Snyder, and Atkinson, always seem to have a job so 17 left.

Reddick will probably stay, Donavan will get a job, and Splitter seems to be poised to have a job. 14 left. Most of those are recent hires or are doing fine. Some variation of this happens every year.

I think you see this in other workplaces, someone who is a boss specialist and can really get into the creases with people/skills but don’t have the top-down skills or the ability to let other people take the reigns on more specific things

Some guys know they’re best as a No. 2 guy. He might be that type of coach

Some guys aren’t good at managing a team. Brian Shaw was a great assistant coach and loved by the Laker players during his time there. The moment he got a head coaching job he lost the team and tried rapping to them so he could relate. Not everyone is a great leader.

Some guys are better assistants. Some guys don’t want the pressure. Some just don’t give a damn. Sam Cassell seems like the type of not give a damn and just wants to be in the sport

The defining factor of all head coaches is their ability to furrow their brow at the refs and players when disappointed or upset. Unfortunately this rules Sam out of the head coaching role.

Nowadays teams try to hire a young analytical guy. The team he coaches for right now is a prime example as they picked Joe Maz over Cassell and then Charles Lee got hired in Charlotte
