AI usage is MASSIVE. On reddit you wouldn’t believe it because there is a staunch anti ai campaign here, but outside of social media SO many people use AI for everyday things. It’s why companies are going so hard on AI right now, because it’s going to be the money maker of the future. Much to the dismay of certain subset of reddit users.

Every single local mom&pop shop/restaurant is using it. Even my local government is using it to make posters on, get ready for this, CLEANING UP THE DESERT AND KEEPING OUR WATER CLEAN.

This is incredibly naive. It’s already been massively way more useful than crypto and lmfao not even worth bringing up NFTs as a comparison.
We FOR SURE are in a boom and all the AI companies are using VC money so that’s why everything is so cheap for consumers. A good comparison is when uber first blew it is was wayyyy cheaper than Taxis and a steal and now it’s expensive as fuck. This is the best time as a consumer to use LLMs and once the business plans change I expect the market to respond appropriately.
The big thing is we don’t know exactly where it’s going and that’s the big reason for the overvaluation but once we have a better idea of where it is headed and the timeframe the insane explosion of it on the market will calm down and at worst burst.
But even if LLMs make zero more progress today it’ll completely change a ton of industries, and it already has.

For my line of work - generative AI - has been overall useless as the more advanced you get the less useful it actually is. It makes far too many mistakes and consistently gets stuck within a repetitive cycling.
Its pretty much an entry-level tool only and can be more of a nuisance than a benefit for those who properly know what they’re doing.
It also does A LOT of harm to the general environment and people’s livelihoods.

It really depends on where it all goes. If AI is taking jobs from humans to cut costs it will have an extremely negative effect on everyone in society. If you love dystopian capitalism then I get where you are coming from. If you are a human you should be worried as well.
I think AI definitely has a place in the world, but the issue is there seems to be no hard foundational regulations for it to prevent what you mentioned. As a tool? AI has endless potential. As a complete replacement for humans? That should be considered an ethical, and legal problem but nothing is going to happen on that front until 20%+ of the job market is taken over by greedy corporations replacing their workers with it
