Hell, there’s an argument to be made that the number of stars you have isn’t as important as the depth of your team, not just now, but all time. I mean, possibly the greatest player of all time (not in my book but still) Kareem Abdul Jabbar only went to the finals twice in the 70’s despite being, pretty inarguably, the best player for the majority of the decade during an era where star talent wasn’t super common.

Let’s say SGA beats Luka a lot and he wins a lot of rings (hopefully for me!). If Luka gets the trio of a ring, MVP, and Finals MVP, even if Shai wins more (highly speculative on my end for both SGA and Luka) people 50 years from now might have conversations similar to the ones we have about Wilt and Russell, or Oscar Robertson and Jerry West. It’s certainly not implausible.

I think your team struck a lightning in a bottle kind of with getting traded an mvp level player and a massive amount of picks at the same time. That just doesn’t ever happen. I also think it helped that Shai was a steady developer so Presti didn’t feel the need to go all in too soon which he maybe wouldn’t do anyway but who knows. That’s part of the reason why Mavs were always playing catch up because they took a huge swing right away and it didn’t work. All that to say most gms still probably fuck up somewhere even when handed that situation and Presti is just making all the right moves but I don’t think that is easily replicable to serve as an example if you get me.

The regular season doesn’t matter and that stat is dumb as hell, but yes, it’s not lost on me that Embiid looked multiple orders of magnitude better than Jokic this round. And honestly the difference was more mentality than anything else. Embiid refused to lose whereas Jokic was checked out until it was time to pretend-fight much smaller men after games were lost.

I definitely had bought the Embiid as a fraud narrative hook line and sinker prior to this series. Now I’m terrified he’ll beat my team when I’ve never before thought to even worry about him.
