I mean tbh, this statement is really boiled down to something that encourages people to consider that the team as a whole is very important, even if it seems like having a Lebron James or a Jokic seems like the real X-factor, and in that sense it’s obviously correct. Frankly, I don’t think you need to be an NBA player to understand or recognize that, and I wouldn’t be surprised to know some players throughout the league’s history really haven’t felt the same way as he does.

On the flip side, this comment probably shouldn’t be taken too literally. Even if you could quantify that, so much is different from one team’s roster to the next that you can’t really expect any level of meaningful consistency in terms of where value comes from in one series vs. the next.

Case in point, the Lakers had the two best players in 2004 and they got smoked.

This is even more true now than ever because of the 5-out nature of the game. It’s harder than ever to hide your star on defense, so they have to expend energy defensively or get cooked. Couple that with going through them over and over on offense leads to them wearing out by the end of the game.

One of the underrated aspects of OKC’s defense is how good they are at switching seamlessly so that Shai is always the helper and almost never the primary defender on the ball. This not only keeps him out of foul trouble, it allows him to conserve energy for the offensive end. It’s not that he’s a bad defender, it’s just good team strategy for him to be off-ball while guys like Dort, Wallace and Caruso are on-ball. Most teams don’t have that luxury.

Exactly!! this is trading away your team depth to get a star player rarely leads to winning a championship.

Case in point of the Wolves/Nuggets series. Denver did not get role player victory or the coaching victory.

Jaden played like a star with Ant injury and he and Gobert won at least two games. Ayo won game 4, and Finch won game 6.

Thus you get a 4-2 series win for the Wolves.

And add one for refs, and so they actually win 5.
