Think any owner with a pulse or clue jumps infront of that train and vetoes it immediately. The Mavericks unfortunately have a very special ownership group.

Even in other sports, the old Colts owner claimed his GM wanted to trade Peyton Manning during 2004 when contract talks came to a halt in 2004 (https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/jim-irsay-bill-polian-wanted-to-trade-peyton-manning-in-2004/), but the owner rejected the move. Sometimes GMs move weird and need the owner to stop them from stupidity.

I can understand Nico a completely warped and incorrect view of the value of Luka and Anthony Davis. 

I can understand having an outsized belief in Anthony Davis as a player. 

I can even understand having some theoretical concerns about Luka’s long term outlook. 

But what I will NEVER understand is how Nico knew he had to make this trade under the cover of darkness because either 1)it would get stopped cold or 2)it would create a bidding war when teams realized Luka was available and he might be pressured into taking a deal for someone other than AD. 

He knew that, but he DIDN’T clear the Lakers out for every tradeable asset they could muster. He had ALL the leverage. And he just…didn’t use it. 

Obviously he sold out but It’s kind of crazy that Cuban didn’t have enough loyalty left in the org. to get a heads up on the trade. He hired Nico and others who knew of the trade. Of course Nico probably knew like Jeanie that could well kill the trade, but he still owns 30%!

What other trades have been made that have such a secret/shady atmosphere around them.

Yeah keep it secret cause it was so freaking awful that any moron would have told the Dallas GM that he was getting raped. He didn’t get picks, maybe multiple ones on top of what he got. There’s a reason why the entire nba landscape was pissed. The fact that there was no leaks probably meant it wasn’t shopped cause if it was, teams would have given more and the Mavs would have know they were getting wrecked.

The more that comes out the more we wonder….What the hell was Nico thinking?

It had to be kept a secret because if not the lakers would’ve been forced to have to add 4 additional first round picks for it to even be considered somewhat fair lmao. What a joke of a GM nico is. If Rudy Gobert got 4 frp luka should get way more.

If it got leaked, it would have likely fell through since third party opinions would have resulted in the lakers giving up more than just AD.

Looking back at it, AD has likely had the most expensive player to trade for in NBA history if we count total net traded value of lakers young core for him at Pels then again for Luka.

Still can’t believe Nico completely blew up his professional life for absolutely no reason because he thought AD was still that guy. Cost him his job, reputation, and his vision just didn’t come to fruition at all. Part of me wants to believe the NBA had a hand in this and they paid him on the low. 

Of the 9000 things that were stupid about the trade, I just considered this one for the first time:

We had just seen during the Lakers’ tenure that AD desperately needs to be paired with a primary ball handler since he’s not a natural offensive distributor. So if you wanted the ideal set up for Davis in Dallas, the one thing above all else that you needed to retain was a lead ballhandler, ideally one who throws lobs really well to vertical spacing threats (i.e. you wanted Luka Doncic or someone that looks very similar to him).
