The Rock, Paper, Scissors dynamic in the West is awesome
This is a sweeping generalization and hasn’t at all played out so far this post-season, but there’s a fun game of rock, paper, scissors in the West happening right now with the vastly different styles of play coming from what appear to be the top-4 teams. In some order, it goes OKC, SAS, DEN, MIN.
MIN was not the better team on paper than DEN this year. However, they match up exceedingly well against DEN and appear to have their specific number. MIN beats DEN. Conversely, MIN‘s lack of a ball handler is exposed specifically against OKC, and it wasn’t particularly close in the playoffs last season. OKC beats MIN.
OKC beats MIN, but OKC is stymied by SAS’s paint defense and athletic, big defenders. Judging from our only data point — regular season matchups — SAS beats OKC.
SAS beats OKC, but SAS’s perimeter defense doesn’t work against Jokic (again, based on regular season results as our main datapoint) who isn’t bothered by Wemby’s length. DEN beats SAS.
Anyways, it’s fun to watch and seems to be a critical lesson in the importance of regular season seeding. I don’t personally remember an era where this sort of dynamic played out.
