to call those career earnings is a bit inaccurate. getting ejected so unfairly and so early in your career can absolutely have a mental impact on a young player, and if so would almost certainly have long term financial consequences for him. that’s why the stars are reacting this way - they’re not just offended at a bad call, the guys are worried that its going to stifle his game, maybe hinder his career.

Right a 2k fine for someone making 2mil a year is the same as a $200 fine for someone who make a 200k/year.

Look at the NFL guys that go bankrupt despite making shitloads as they end up with chronic pain and things like CTE. Money runs out in a hurry if you’re dealing with serious medical bills and a lot of these places do not take insurance at all and can basically charge whatever they want for the ones that are basically the only people that provide a service you need.

These guys that rely on their body and have a short window to make money really need to squeeze every dime they can and preserve it all, because there’s no guarantee their bodies hold up later in life with all the strain they put on it. I completely get why they choose money over championships or whatever. Your health is more important than a trophy.

I think you’re asking if the fines are deducted out of the paycheck itself the way that health care plans etc costs are so that you’re not paying post-income-tax money to pay a fine back to the league, which is theoretically covering part of your salary anyways. My guess is yes for the tax advantage (i.e., maybe you pay your fine out of your paycheck directly to the team that is paying your paycheck, and then the team reimburses the league) but truth be told I have no idea.
