Nurse was coaching the All Star game that year when everybody was taking it super seriously and the players were busting their asses trying to get the win.
Kemba was on the Celts and was already dealing with some lower body/leg area injury issues- I think it might’ve been his hips or something… I can’t remember for sure.
Anyway- Nurse kept him in and rode him for far too long in a super competitive, hard fought game that ultimately didn’t mean anything except whose team got more charity money. Kemba wasn’t even playing particularly well in the game so there was no reason not to go with another All Star guard toward the end of the game.
There were some conspiracy theorists who thought Nurse was purposefully trying to wear Kemba down (a player on an eastern rival) because he was the coach of the Raptors that year.
I don’t know if I buy all that, but Kemba was never as explosive after that All Star game. His production and efficiency dropped hard after that. He was worse for the rest of that season and the next year he was absolutely cooked. And it was only a couple years after that when Kemba couldn’t even hang in a league overseas. He fell off a cliff fast.
Every sensible Celtic fan in existence wanted him taken out of that game.
He had also been on a minutes restriction at the time which Nurse ignored. And oh hey look at that, they played each other in the second round that year and the series got stretched to 7 funny how that works
Played him ~30 minutes in an All-Star game, while Kemba had degenerative knee issues and had been questionable to play at all. He came back sore from that game and never really recovered.
The fans blame Nurse, but if Kemba was at a point where his knees couldn’t handle big All-Star game minutes, then he probably wasn’t going to last through a long playoff stretch either.
