[Highlight] Wemby postgame,on clearing the concussion protocol: “The Spurs have done an amazing job. I’m very unhappy about the way the protocol has been handled by other parties… The injury was weird though, it was funny.”
Wonder what he means by other parties?

Metlife turf claims another victim
maybe he wanted to play in the previous game and the independent doctor or NBA wasn’t letting him
That’s what it sounds like to me.
Fans appreciate his hyper-competitiveness but concussions don’t happen often in the NBA. In a one-off setting involving one of the league’s premier stars and the league doctors signed off on it, the media would rain questions on both Silver and Spurs staff if something happened in that Game 3. Headlines claiming “Does the NBA not have a proper concussion protocol?” or “Why rush a star back to play?” Silver didn’t want to deal with that
100%. As a spurs fan, I have 0 issue with the league taking this protocol very seriously. If It’s a bit too rigid, then it is what it is. You don’t play with that type of injury
But might be more to the story ofc. We’ll see at the end of the season (after wemby’s first ring)
Yeah, unless more comes out considering he said the injury was “weird” and “funny”, sounds like maybe it needed to be rigid
Might have to do with conflicting information, confusing timeline, unprofessional conduct, etc. Could be a myriad of things outside of just wanting to play in game 3
Yeah he needed to at least sit out a game was out cold. Like if this wasn’t the NBA he’d still be out right now lol
I get where he’s coming from, even thoughI think the league made the right call. If your team has a shit medical staff that just pushes a player to play and then gets hurt, its good for the league to step in. That said, I have more faith in the spurs medical staff than any other medical staff in the league basically.
On a tangent, its incredibly unfair how good the spurs have it in turns of FO/medical staff/team culture.
Protecting athletes from themselves is a very big thing and we see a very disgusting amount of laughing and calling it soft from NBA media in particular. Inside, in particular.
My headcanon is that the NBA just sent random guys to interrupt him at like 5am for neurological tests because that’s what le protocol demanded, while the Spurs were more cooperative and worked with him
“Wemby it’s 3am, who is the seventh most popular Pokémon? Get this wrong and you fail the concussion protocol”
Easy, that’s Mew.
Lmaooooo
In the press conference he was asked how long before the game he knew he was cleared, and he refused to answer. They probably made him wait last second.
What’s weird though is he later clarifies that the doctors on both sides were “great”. So he thinks the league doc did his job well. So why is he upset? Who actually made the call he wasn’t cleared last game?
He probably got told he shouldn’t say that he didn’t agree with how the protocols were handled and had to backtrack
He said the doctors were great all around.
He’s implying that both the Spurs doctors and the NBA doctors cleared him, but the league still wouldn’t let him play, wouldn’t give him an actual reason, and didn’t notify him in a timely manner.
i do think its a good system to have an independent doc check the players out. not just the team doc.
They set it up that way for a reason.
Yeah, head injuries concussions are the last injuries you want to start rushing people back from. Think it’s a necessary system.
Tbh no doctor would suggest attending a basketball game less than a week after getting a concussion, much less playing in one.
I got a concussion one time, 5 days before a music festival that I had been planning for all year. I defiantly told the doc that I was going to the fest no matter what and he pretty much said ok that’s stupid and I don’t recommend it but whatever man.
yeah
Spurs doctors - in the middle of a tight playoff series - wanting a player to play and the NBA doctors saying no isn’t a negative on the NBA like he’s saying. It’s a negative on the Spurs and a good job to the NBA.
100%. If anything the spurs med staff need to learn a little from this… the hyper competitive 22 year old superstar will want to play no matter what and they need to protect him from himself.
It’s a league protocol so probably the league that made him sit last game
Smart by the league or other party. Don’t wanna end up like NFL players
Cam Skattebo: “Fuck you”
Yeah. I remember Derek Lively in the playoffs vs the Wolves when he got kneed at the back of the head. They had the injury as a neck sprain in order to avoid the concussion protocol, which would need an independent doc clear him. He did missed a game though.
He has to be cleared by an NBA doctor (not Spurs doctor) before returning to play
The Spurs wanted him to be cleared for game 3 and evidently the league said no, hence why he’s unhappy.
He just mentioned the NBA in the postgame presser and he’s really not pleased with them.
Uncle Dennis
Spurs doc put on a fake moustache to play the bad guy so they could rest him without him getting annoyed at the org
The Miami Dolphins
Obviously the league doctors
The extraterrestrial ATLiens
I think he said “all the parties,” ie, everyone involved.
NBA doctors
Probably the protocol itself. When it comes to concussions you have to follow the steps the NBA has regardless of how you feel. He cleared it in 5 days which is faster than the average. So he probably felt fine by the next day and was getting impatient.
Oh don’t mind him it’s the consussion speaking.
Real madrid
If you have a concussion, and the medical staff you work with are involved in evaluating your readiness, you might feel more inclined to please the staff and say you’re ready. And conversely, a team doctor might be biased unknowingly, due to their position with the team. An independent evaluation is best.
He’s throwing some shade at the NBA league offices and their independent medical consultants for being too strict with the concussion protocol. God forbid the NBA take a brain injury too seriously
He means the NBA didn’t have a CT scan big enough for him
He means his coach made him watch Macgruber and he laughed
He watched MacGyver and fashioned up a response
He listened to MacGyver (from Million Dead’s 2012 album, A Song to Ruin) and now he has to look up what the Scottish Enlightenment is
Back in the day, patients who couldn’t fit in the hospital scanners got sent to Sea World in San Antonio to get scanned. Apparently that doesn’t happen anymore because patients got really upset about it lol
Get him in that one they use at zoos for lions n shit
Wemby needs the giraffe scanner
Wemby always saying shit, that, if anyone else said it, Adam Silver would be sending Jeff Gillooly over to pay them a visit with a tire iron, followed by a pair of pliers and a blow torch.
He says it smartly though. He didn’t say it was the NBA staff just said other parties
Yea. That’s the difference between him and a lot of the American guys. He’s a lot more eloquent and laid back and it doesn’t come off as confrontational.
Not sure about laid back but he’s certainly more diplomatic
I just mean in his tone of voice. He’s more subdued.
Definitely not a nationality-based divide lol but he is good at it
kinda impressive he can hold his tongue and play word-savvy games in a second language
Goats say what they want
Damn, Jeff Gillooly is a deep pull. I haven’t thought about him in years.
What does he mean by this?
he’s still concussed
CTE Wemby is out for revenge
He was a little confused in the 1st half then he locked in
“I forgot I was 7’6 man my bad.”
Wemby at halftime, probably.
He chucked like 5 3’s in the first quarter and then dunked the rest of the way. So I actually believe this.

Ahhh, beat me to it. Heat fans got a lotta time to think about fun nicknames for guys not on the Heat.
Victor Wembanagovailoa
In Australia, if concussed in anAFL game, you can’t play or train for 10 days. Crazy Wendy is back so fast.
He is most definitely just playing with a concussion. Shit takes weeks to heal
Yeah, so dangerous and irresponsible from everyone. It shouldn’t make any difference, but they also could win this series comfortably without him.
Nobody cares more for their narrative then Wemby though, and he is doing all he can to seem the tough guy. Quickest way to kneecap a career.
Probably wanted to play last game but the independent neurologists wouldn’t clear him. Very common for athletes to be mad they aren’t allowed to can’t play even when it’s the medically sound choice
I’m not sure but I think we should be listening to the guy with the head injury more often.
In all seriousness, it was probably just NBA brass that wouldn’t let him play since it looked really bad on camera and they thought it would be a bad look.
Very much doubt that happened. If he passes the neuro tests, he plays
He wanted to get cleared earlier but they didn’t let him. Idk, this response is kinda wild. Him getting cleared allowed to play Game 4 has to be medical malpractice. This guy got concussed and came back in less than a week. It’s so dangerous
Yeah. I get that we want him to play, it’s the playoffs, but it has been less than a week. I’ll never forget that game that Tua played too soon (I want to say it was a Sunday game where he bonked his head and then claimed it was a back injury… so then he played Thursday night and basically seized on the field)
My timing might be off, but he for sure shouldn’t have played, did play anyway, and then he hit his head. The point is that your brain can still be a bit swollen and if you hit it again, it’s so much worse than if you wait the recommended time.
Love got concussed, missed 1 game and played the rest of the finals.
I’m guessing he was technically medically clear for Game 3 but the NBA’s doctors ruled him out for the game because it had only been 48 hours or something
Idk
it’s provocative. gets the people going!
He means he was fine and was annoyed by the league doctors not letting him play
He thinks his injury is weird, but also funny
In the face of early conspiracy theories that the league would be soft on their protocol because its a superstar, this is funny.
I’m glad if so that the NBA made Wemby sit for game 3, because to be blunt, the Spurs have enough high draft picks even without him to win this series.
And who doesn’t want the future memories of seeing Wemby hopefully have a 15+ year NBA career.
Literally anyone who is a fan of a team not named the Spurs?! lol
Speak for yourself, as a fan of basketball I’d love to see every superstar in the league have long, healthy careers.
Agreed. As a nuggets fan I feel awful for ant and divincenzo.. even though it seems like we’re gonna lose anyway😭
almost certain he says “happy” not “unhappy.” Funny it was a fairly big deal when Wemby got drafted and they brought in some of his own guys – his trainer and a few others iirc. Spurs put them on staff and fans, jaded from the kawhi shit, were wondering if he was gonna do the diva route with wanting special treatment. Turns out this dude just bleeds silver and black.
he confirmed being unhappy about it in the post game presser
He says unhappy
I think it’s “unhappy”. In the post game press conference he repeats that sentiment but doesn’t elaborate.
Nope, you are incorrect
My dad has post concussion syndrome from a series of work injuries. I’m glad the NBA takes it more seriously these days and doesn’t leave it up to eager guys in their 20s wanting to come back immediately.
Kawhi in shambles
Glad HE thinks it’s funny, SA fans disagree
I mean, hes the one that suffered the injury. I think hes allowed to have an opinion on it lmao
“But what about how I feel???” -Dude sitting at home watching illegal streams contributing in no way to the players, game or organization.
Concussed Wemby is still smarter than 90% of the league
Well spoken doesn’t equal smart. Dude didn’t even attend college. That said you might still be right because a lot of athletes are so dumb it’s not a high bar.
College is hardly an indicator of intelligence especially for athletes. The things he says are very insightful and well thought out especially for someone his age. Plus he reads a lot and has a lot of self-confidence to be himself. And yes, it definitely is a very low bar
I was pretty worried about him watching him live. Looked like the lights went out for a sec or two.
Kawaii is like WTF.
Was this a dig at Kawhi lol
Literally I think he’s just pissed he wasn’t allowed to play last game lol! Understandable I mean you’re one of the best players in the league and extreme competitor hanging with monks and stuff trying to perfect your craft I mean come on 😂
But he has to understand this is good. And he shouldn’t even be playing tonight if we’re being honest. He got a concussion on the basketball court and was out cold for a few seconds. Even if it never happens again that’s a very scary thing. We could almost argue it’s malpractice he was out there tonight I mean the end of the day it’s going to be whatever but still
lol I like how he didn’t even try and bend over to Malika who is uncomfortably looking upwards during the interview. Folks need to get a step stool
Sounds like he had a concussion and like all athletes wanted to play. And certain drs were like, well wait a minute here
this is exactly why we need a concussion protocol. he doesn’t even realize the internal damage fully, rest is important.
…🤔 I smell Kawhi vibes in this statement
Where are all the idiots that said he would be out for a week
😂😂😂
is sliver ready for an NBA aaron H?
Happy and unhappy have the exact opposite meanings but good effort on the transcription 👍
He said unhappy
He confirmed he was unhappy in a different presser lol. Clean your ears
He says what he want to say. I love it but I hope it doesn’t get him in trouble
[deleted]
You are incorrect, he said unhappy and then reiterated in the post game presser
Acting like the league doesn’t want him to play is obnoxious.
He says happy
I think he said happy
Nope
he says happy not unhappy
He says “unhappy” & the “but my staff have been amazing” which proves that he had some issue.
& he also states “i was fine from day 1 of the injury”. Im guessing he thought he was good to play & wanted to play & he thinks the protocol is a bit much, since they didn’t clear him.
There’s def a syllable before the “happy,” but maybe it’s just an accent thing or something idk. Does sound like unhappy to me though
And he follows it up with, “but, you know, I’m very happy with my staff.” I think he definitely said unhappy.
He also says “all the parties” and not “other parties”
Also incorrect
yeah how did anyone get “unhappy” from this
by having ears that work
I unmuted the video
I heard happy the first time I watched the interview live. But watching it again I can see why some might think he said unhappy. Cause there is an extra quick syllable and he did say “BUT the Spurs have done an amazing job”. If it was happy, he would more likely say “AND”. But tbh that’s pretty nitpicky and could be slip of the tongue.
He says unhappy and then he reiterated in the post game presser
From his words?
Ngl he still sounds like has CTE a little bit but hopefully he doesn’t get hit head in the head again.
EDIT: I’m obviously exaggerating guys lol.
This sentence gave me CTE.
LMAO
