[Highlight] - Inside the NBA discusses the end of game situation between Jokic and McDaniels regarding the “unwritten rule”
If the losing team decides to shoot instead of running the clock out, then I can shoot a wide open shot.
Hearing Adelman saying “I don’t like it. The game was over.” was so obnoxious. If it was over, why didn’t your guys burn the clock instead of jacking up a shot?
Anyways, screw unwritten rules. They’re written by the losers.
That whole team is annoying from the Star to the coach.
“The game was over” is so weak too because the game may be but the series isn’t over and like other people said, it’s about getting in the head of the other team. If you don’t wana get scored on don’t let the guy score
Belichick was the king of “every snap is experience” and I’m all for it. Why not get an extra shot up for practice, if you’re paid millions to play ball then don’t complain about having to play 48 minutes.
Belichik thing was that it’s more disrespectful to kick a field goal when you’re up by a lot. He’d just keep running it, that at least gives the other team a chance to stop it.
I think that attitude applies here. To me it’s more disrespectful to dribble out the clock and take a 24 second violation, but for some reason teams started doing that, and now people get pissy if you don’t. It’s pro sports, why are we protecting people’s feelings.
I mean the field goal yes, but especially in the 18-1 season he was running like no huddles up 40. But why not get those reps for your guys?
If it’s game 55 Vs the Jazz in Utah at the end of 5 game west coast road trip for a eastern conference team I would understand getting pressed about it but it’s game 4 of a tight series, getting in your opponents head should be your only thought with it going back to Denver for the next game. Denver win and the pressure is suddenly on Minnesota with two key players out.
Even beyond that, I don’t mind when it’s end of bench guys jacking up shots. Those minutes might be the only opportunities those guys get, fire away bro.
Murray’s opportunities or legacy are not going to be impacted by jacking that 3 with nearly no time left in the game.
That was Jaden’s point
Because they were trying to stat pad to get Jokic a triple double. In other words, they’re hypocrites
In the words of Chris Smoove “No sportsmanship for the HOF CPU.”
They intentionally foul at the previous possession, then Murray puts up his 3 before the final rebound.
What that coach even talking about lol.
Would be funny if next time Jaden decided to take 5 offensive rebounds to screw with Denvers team stats. just dump it to the backboard over and over again till the clock runs out.
Giannis tried this once, I don’t think it worked
Thats called the ol’ Ricky Davis
Jokic wanted the triple double
You and I as fans can probably agree that McDaniels has gotten into jok’s head, that the whole nuggets team is playing mentally soft, and that the whole thing was a bitch move by jok.
But the coach can’t say that lol. His job is to win, and whatever he can do to rile his team is what he will do.
Series should be over, we’ve played like dogshit, but it ain’t. we’ve been the beneficiaries of two really unfortunate injuries and if he can capitalize to get his team’s head back in the game he will.
Agreed–I find Adelman in the wrong, but he doesn’t have many other options.
Yea yea you’re not wrong. I’ll just say I’m glad I don’t have to deal with the media cause it’s gotta be super annoying to get every word you said dissected like we’re doing now lol.
I think it’s obnoxious but he had to say it to defend his franchise player. He may not of believed it but he definitely had to say this publicly.
Coach has to stick up for the team, Adelman knows better.
They literally could have dribbled it out but decided to take a Murray 3. They had the ball with the clock off. So dumb lol
Someone pointed out they were trying to get Jokic the assist for the triple double which makes it funny if true
Yeah it would have been the 10th assist for Jokic. Regardless the fact that they had possession with the clock off and took a shot pretty much invalidates their “everyone stopped playing” claim.
Yeah it’s lame either way but especially because they still were shooting
I also think they were trying to do that on a previous possession but Gobert intentionally fouled Jokic to prevent it. I’m not sure if that’s how it happened but I like to believe it is because that’s some elite hating.
Honestly if this was conscious I rate it. If you losing like that why do you get to stat pad for the playoff triple double record?
I like Jokic but seeing this big ass mfer run the fastest I’ve ever seen him across the court just because someone made a fuckin layup is so ridiculous and childish. Maybe if he does it like right next to him sure but it ain’t worth the energy to be that extra.
In the regular season I’m pretty anti shooting, just run the clock out. But in the playoffs when you have to play the same team the very next game, send a fucking message a put on a show at the end. Some kinda 360 tomahawk slam
I agree, playoffs are a completely different beast. I would do it just to make Denver have to come all the way back and inbound the ball.
Yeah Jadens go to is a windmill dunk for these end of game “fuck you”s so he honestly took it easy on em lol
I’m 100% with that.
In that same breath, I wouldn’t be opposed to what Jokic did either. Both teams doing petty work in a high intensity game.
If you’re going to rub it in, completely fine. Just don’t be surprised if a team takes that personally either
Thaz what annoys me. I gots no problem with the rule if both sides obliging. But u can’t get pissy when ur teammate literally broke it
Exactly, they were actually farming stats (Jokic needed the extra assist for a triple double in the loss, Murray I guess wanted to increase his scoring average in the series) a few seconds before, the only reason McDaniels was open in the first place was because they were trying to score on the other end… I makes no sense to run the entire court to confront him for that.
Facts. Same thing happened with the Zion windmill- cp3 bricked the layup instead of dribbling it out allowing Larry nance to rebound and pass it to Zion
They were fouling and pushing the ball for quick shots down 12 with 25 seconds left. Just ridiculous pearl clutching by the nuggets and their fans.
In fairness maybe they was hoping to emulate TMac 😂
I mean that’s true but in that case the game isn’t actually over and the Wolves were justified in playing to the clock is 0.0
Which is fair but put your hands up and don’t cry about it
Shaq saying it would’ve been a 360 windmill dunk for him, LOL. Would’ve loved to see Joker react to something like that.
“It’s the playoffs. I’m trying to embarrass you in front of your family and friends, in front of your wife, in front of your girlfriend. I don’t care about the consequences”
😂
While doing color commentary years ago, noted hippie and Grateful Dead fan Bill Walton said something similar. It was something like…
“This is professional basketball. It’s not youth sports. It’s not college. They’re out there competing as their job. Playing a game and getting paid a ton of money. I’m not going to hold back - I’m trying to get the other team’s coach fired.”
Man I miss Bill Walton’s commentary. I wouldn’t want him doing every game, but he was a joy to listen to. Good times.
Pac-12 after dark was must listen commentary
Conference of champions!
We must tar and feather UCLA, USC, Oregon, and Washington for forsaking the Pacific timezone
Dusan Ristic from Yucatán
The guy lived his life everyday more stoned than most people ever get in their lives.
Dude he was so great. Just pure joy and fun. When paired with Steve “Snapper” Jones as the straight man to Walton’s goofy personality, it was guaranteed to be a fantastic broadcast. Rest in peace and of course, throw it down, big man… throw it DOWN.
“THERE’S PANDEMONIUM INSIDE THE BUILDING!”
This has lived rent free in my head for roughly 25 years, since playing NBA COURTSIDE on N64.
Throw it down big fella
College is grown ass athletes too.
This unwritten rule is how adults are supposed to treat immature children.
Well said
There is no need to show respect until the END of the series.
That was iconic 🤣
first time in a long while I agree with something Shaq says lmao
Same, but still needed Jalen to make the point
Yeah lol. And in the same episode he was hating on Rudy saying that it was just Jokic having a couple of bad games and not the defensive acumen of Rudy to lock him up.
Rudy torturing Shaq is one of my current lifelines, it feeds me
Jaden has done ridiculous dunks in this situation before too it genuinely would have been on brand
We must move the ASG to Denver just so Jaden goes to the dunk contest
I was wondering why Jokic was getting so pissed. McDaniels has literally done this a million times, and like Ernie said it was only a layup.
Jokic is pissed cuz he’s been playing like ass. Definitely frustrating.
Correct! Not only has he done this multiple times but usually he dunks the ball.
Shaq would have swung and that’s a fact.
Shaq would’ve launched a turd at him
The most impressive thing is he always has one ready to go. From conception to shit-in-hand in 2 seconds flat.
Shaq would have stolen Jokic’s underwear and wiped his ass with them, then put them back.
Yeah, he’s 100% being hypocritical here. His ego wouldn’t have accepted this.
Shaq is the most hypocritical person in sports media if we’re being honest lol
Is there an example of shaq getting made at last second scoring? I legit don’t know
Better yet, imagine if bro shot and made a 3 in garbage time. 😭
I don’t think Joker would’ve ran up on Shaq like he did on Jaden.
Joker would have never got in Shaq’s face.
Joker might send an email rather than confront Shaq lol.
personally I’m going for the standard right handed layup since I’m only 5’8
Same. And I’m also missing it. I wonder how jokic would react then. Would he be even more mad that I missed the wide open layup?
His tall brother would find you
I’m pulling up from deep and yelling “Curry!”
Clank !
If that means Jokic won’t get in his feelings and run toward me, then so be it
If it’s in front of my own bench, during a home game, I know my teammates will have my back
Im yelling “Valentine!”
Nooooo
I’m 6’2” but I’m dribbling that ball off of my foot out of bounds for the ultimate power move of giving them a useless possession.
I also suck at ball but that has nothing to do with it.
Make sure your right knee also goes up with your right arm, like they’re tied together with a string. Sure would be embarrassing if you didn’t have proper fundamentals
Same but I’d probably miss. I’m not coordinated. I’ll leave the real hoop to the professionals
You could try to touch the bottom of the backboard, maybe put your left hand behind your head. You’re selling yourself short here.
Why didn’t they take the starters out if they felt the game was over? They were stat hunting trying to get Jokic triple double.
the game was not over until you hear the sirens. if anything , it is disrespectful to stop playing when you are out of chance to win because people paid serious money to watch 48 minutes, not 47
C’mon 😂 Jaden did not lay it in in order to be respectful to the fans, that’s absurd. He clearly wanted to piss off the Nuggets and he achieved that.
Jaden is a well known fan respecter.
If he wanted to do it for the fans hed do the bounce windmill, would have brought the house down
They’re only playing Minny in the first place because Jokic was determined to hit 65 games and qualify for awards 🥴
I got secondhand embarrassment watching Jokic trot across the court to throw that hissifit. How fucking humiliating. If you didn’t want to get punked then you should’ve done something about it on the floor instead of running DHO’s and not attacking the paint while Gobert was on the bench.
Lmfao he thought that was gonna intimidate Jaden. Instead he just got grabbed by his jersey and mushed in the face. He sweet
I was disgusted that Denver shot the ball as time expired. Have some class, the game’s over!
I think anyone who played basketball knows that the expectation is that the winning team isn’t supposed to keep trying to score. Like it or not, that’s the unwritten rule.
Also, anyone who doesn’t think Jaden McDaniels meant anything with that… Doesn’t know Jaden McDaniels. Lol. It’s meant to be disrespectful. That’s why he did it.
It’s like being flipped off by someone. You can say “why are you bothered, it’s just a finger? Lots of people hold up fingers. Why is the middle one different?!”, but it obviously means “fuck you.”
of course he meant something with it and he should. this is the playoffs anything to get the mental edge piss of the other team etc. nuggets are just soft and poor losers
Yeah I mean it’s also the dude who just called their whole team bums on defense right?
It makes it just a tad more disrespectful lol
Everyone in here commenting knows it was a fuck you, but having someone flip you off or say fuck you to you - if you are an adult - isn’t a big deal at all. Jaden calling out the nuggets’ defense was also a fuck you - and in both instances, the nuggets handled it like babies. Showing up unprepared and playing like dogshit against an injured team…a team they intentionally chose to match up against by beating the Spurs in game 82!
Nuggets were down 14 with 17 seconds left and they made a play to score
no, you see, only the losing team is allowed to score until the game is tied. Then they let the clock run out and go get ice cream together as friends. This is what basketball was meant to be
it’s like in baseball hitters aren’t supposed to swing at 3-0 pitches so they are supposed to let the pitcher get a free strike. dumb as hell
I actually agree with that one. If a pitcher throws me 3 straight balls, he’s gonna have to prove he can throw a strike before I’m gonna swing. Pitchers with bad control will give you a free base more often that not if you just don’t swing
Not only that, but with 1.6 seconds left Denver shot a half court shot.
I saw that
I dislike jokic as much as sgas flopping antics
Jokic does it early in the game all the time. I understand if it’s late in a close game sure
To ensure nobody feels too bad about losing I propose a rule change where the losing team is automatically awarded points at the end of the game so that they only ever lose by 1.
I was so nervous that Jaden’s trash talk would light a fire under Denver lol. He knew what he was doing. Win or lose, Denver is going to need to have a long, long look in the mirror this offseason.
Jaden is not a normal human being. He feeds off of hate. I don’t think he processes fear or emotions like we do lol. Altho he did punch a wall once which was fucking idiotic
Years from now we’re going to find out Jaden has no amygdala lol
This is always lost in the wall conversations, but in his (slight) defense, that wall in the tunnel is covered in a thick cushion 99% of the time. The arena was doing work on it that week, and he punched it through a hanging tarp unaware.
Having said that, yeah don’t punch things, folks.
I do remember that. But like you said, don’t punch things and you won’t accidentally hit a wall
Hey you won’t catch me pushing back twice against a Moss Icon fan. Amen.
Kinda like Collin, the energy vampire, but he feeds off of hate lol
dont want guys to run up the score, dont get beaten. simple
Don’t jack up a shot.
If you play ball instead of running the clock down, so am I. Fuck you
I hated it at the time, but I whole heartedly agree now;
During the pats Randy Moss era, the Pat’s were accused of running up the score, and Bill Belichik said, “they’re professionals on Defense out there, too”
Y’all are getting paid to do your job. So, do your job.
Unwritten rule - don’t stop till the whistle blows
Written rule - you can’t leave the bench during a fight
Written rule - you can’t run across the court and attack someone for hurting your feelings.
Not being allowed to leave the bench is crazy. Like I get not being allowed to join in, but if you’re pushing the guys apart that seems good, no?
theres plenty of people on the court to do that. Plus it was on the complete other side of the floor
How many people can really do anything to physically control an 7 foot 280 lb professional athlete other than another 7 foot 280 lb professional athlete?
It’s to prevent bench-clearing brawls.
If you’re not in the game, you don’t belong on the court.
Simple as that.
Chuck is being a big baby here. Real champions use it as motivation for next game. They don’t get into a confrontation or put out a “hit”
Ummmm they used to. Players were dirty as hell when he played.
Oddly enough, unless there was already bad blood brewing, teams back then generally didn’t care about garbage time baskets. The mindset for someone like Larry Bird was more likely to be, “I’m pissed about losing this game” rather than “I’m mad that Walker Russell converted a layup to push the final deficit from 12 to 14”.
That being said, if teams were already pissed at each other or if someone was looking for an excuse to throw down, there were some exceptions to the “I don’t really care” policy, with Charles Barkley being involved in two of the most notable examples.
Barkley vs. Laimbeer (after Mahorn’s garbage time poster)
Barkley attempting to prevent Hakeem’s second garbage time dunk of the series
Both examples above came alongside a barrelful of toxic supporting context. That aside, most garbage time buckets elicited little more than a shoulder shrug.
Jaden made a layup in a game. Joker ran full court to charge another player at the end of a game. Barkley admitted to putting out bounties to hurt opposing players. These are not the same.
What does Chuck know about being a champion lol
Yeah! Only us Redditors know what it takes!
Typical Charles😂. Why didn’t you defend with the same energy on the last 100+ points?
I mean lets be honest, jokic was just annoyed he lost badly and found a reason to take his anger out on someone
Unwritten rule? Doesn’t Jokic time waste fairly often?
Unwritten rules don’t apply to Jokic
Also, Ayo got that delay of game because Jokic hooked his arm which didn’t allow Ayo to get out of the way.
What’s the unwritten rule on chasing a triple double after the game has been decided instead of dribbling it out?
How about playing defense until the clock hits zero…
Pretty sure Chuck never gave a fuck about running up the score when he was the leading scorer on the dream team. They had a few lopsided victories where they probably weren’t too concerned with running out the clock.
You mean the Charles Barkley who ran over/through Shane Heal as he was shooting a 3 during the Olympics? No, never.
They knew they were going to win every game
I mean so did Minnesota in the 4th quarter. I’m just pointing out the hypocrisy of chuck not seeming to worry about running up a score when he was a player.
He also said if he did it and the opponent came over and knocked his ass out, he’d be “OK I deserved it”. It’s not a “rules for thee but not for me” situation, so not really hypocritical.
Chuck hates us so this take make sense
Shaq has an excellent take. Do anything you can to get in their heads. Yeah its a shitty thing to do, but jokic let them get to him. If you’re really pissed off, deal with it and get him back next game
Yeah its a shitty thing to do
Except it isn’t when Murray shot a three with 12 seconds left in the other end. If you have the ball with less than 24 on the clock and you take a shot, don’t cry when the opponent also goes for a last shot, no matter the score
That unwritten rule needs to die. Play ball.
In the regular season it makes sense to have a gentlemen’s agreement to run the clock out and not risk injury when the games out of reach.
In the playoffs? Nah run the score up and win.
Denver didn’t seem to care about that agreement when they had the ball with 13 seconds left and instead of running it out took a 3?
I’m someone who usually pops into these discussions to declare that teams in the ‘80s and ‘90s used to have zero cares about whether someone shot the ball at the end of a blowout.
Ex 1
Ex 2
Ex 3
Ex 4
… and so many more.
Most garbage time buckets are usually about either whoever’s shooting the ball or the fans. If you’re just trying to get into the box score, whatever. If you’re trying to give the fans what they want, whatever. But if there’s a third column in play where the opponent thinks you’re purposely trying to go out of your way to style on them specifically just to pour salt in the wound, that was the one exception to the rule back then.
And as it so happens, Charles Barkley was directly involved in the one shining example of that sort of play.
Toward the tail end of the Suns’ Game 7 loss to the Rockets in 1994, the Suns were half-heartedly attempting to apply a foul while down seven with under 20 seconds to go. The Rockets moved the ball around until Hakeem Olajuwon ended up with the rock near the bucket. Instead of letting time expire, Hakeem went up to dunk and was shoved in mid-air by Barkley, leading to all sorts of consternation and multiple ejections.
It was the second time that series that Hakeem attempted to end a blowout win with a dunk, the first leading to the Danny Ainge incident when the former MLB second baseman rifled a point blank fastball off Mario Elie’s face.
I don’t remember Barkley’s comments at the time but I wouldn’t be surprised if, after that first Hakeem dunk, Chuck committed to doing something about it if he ever tried it again. Then I imagine those ethos have stuck with him all these years later.
I’ve never agreed with Shaq before.
Ngl I’m with Shaq enough of this sore loser unwritten rules bullshit
In the playoffs the “rule” doesn’t apply, you run it up on them, and make them feel the hurt. Especially if the losing team was still competing the possession before, and Extra-Especially if it’s your home court.
the unwritten rule should be you have to do a cool dunk in final 30 secs if you’re up so much. give the fans a show! dribbling it so is so anti climatic and boring, just encourages fans to leave the stadium early
I actually got in some trouble with this in an intermural game. Had the ball in the opponents half with like 20 seconds left of the rebound. I laid that bitch in and proceeded to get hate from the other team, they wouldnt shake my hand or anything. The way I see it, if you don’t want me to score then D up, otherwise I’m gonna go get a bucket
Shaq is right. This is the playoffs. Play until the final whistle and get in the heads of your opponent
I’m a nuggets fan and the unwritten rule is stupid as fuck. Get mad that the bucket they got was ultimately meaningless because you got blown out. Getting mad at the bucket itself is lame af.
It is my hope that end of game situations like that turn into dunk contest auditions. Make end of game garbage time entertaining. Screw your feelings.
While I agree that Shaq would not hesitate to dunk at the end, I also think Shaq would get upset if someone does that to him 😂
I’ll accept the downvotes as a homer, but this is such a small thing to get twisted up about. I’m mostly with Shaq… I also think Jaden moved slowly. I wouldn’t be surprised if he thought he was running out the clock completely.
And even if he didn’t, fuck Jokic’s reaction - we won and he was frustrated. We won without our best player for the majority of the game. Without one of our best shooters for the entire game.
A loss is a loss. The layup was an exclamation point and not even a crazy one. The Wolves outplayed Denver last night. Don’t like it? Don’t lose.
“This video was flagged for violating our Community Guidelines”
Aaand it’s taken down. Thanks Disney
Link to the clip in the post, on AdTube -_-
you da man
Barkley sounds like a fool. And him excusing Jokic lazy bad play is why I don’t take that show serious anymore. Jokic is pathetic on defense he plays with no heart.
Jaden wanted the smoke, got the smoke, inhaled it, and blew it right in their faces lmao
Imagine getting rage baited in the playoffs by a team/player that does not like you.
They were at home too. Sometimes players genuinely just wanna hit one for the road to send the crowd home happy.
Jokic just really wants to be done so he can go play with his ponies
Who cares. The clock is still running. Just play the damn game. I think this unwritten rule is so idiotic.
Thanks for keeping it real Shaq. Chuck, take a seat .. nobody wants to listen to the opinion of the guy with zero rings. Get your points McDaniels … put the cherry on top of that victory. Who cares what Joker thinks. He should be suspended for the next game. 😮
Elite ball Knowledge time. (Which I do not possess lol)
Shaq played a long time. So surely this happened vs him, while he’s on the losing side. One would assume, he did play like 18 seasons or whatever.
Did he ever flip out on another team doing a Jaden style layup/dunk/shot?? I’m assuming no since he said he don’t care. But obviously he lies a lot lol.
MacDaniels living rent free in our head, maybe we should show that same spirit the whole fucking game…
We played lackadaisacal ball and then started panicking.
Why Shaq acting holier than thou like he didn’t just say he’d get the dude the next game?
Most sensitive man in sports commentary claims he wouldn’t have been sensitive if it were him. Got it
I’m with Shaq. I’m doing something crazy fuck you guys
For me, it’s the playoffs. All that stuff goes out the window . If you don’t like it, stop it. This is the playoffs, we trying to kill every team in every way possible
There’s nuance to this and Shaq, as always, is full of shit. Everyone knows there’s an unwritten rule, which means YES YOU CAN DO IT. It’s unwritten. Asking why is also bs. We all know why. That’s not even my gripe with him.
I don’t even care that Jaden did it. He could have windmilled it. It’s the playoffs and Denver was still trying to score. My problem is Shaq has such an ego, is such a poor sportsman, and so petty that he ABSOLUTELY would not have liked that if he was playing and more than likely would have caused some shit himself. He’s the biggest baby and wants to act like he isn’t.
Ernie “he’s crazy” story to massage the context is irrelevant. If you don’t want to be get embarrassed in a playoff game, then play harder, win and don’t get embarrassed. What a joke that this is actually a debate. The “rules” can gtfoh.
It’s playoff basketball grow up joker
If it isn’t written down in the rulebook, it isn’t a rule. What is this, baseball?
McDaniels is playing elite level mind games with Denver and I love it
They really couldn’t get anybody else instead of Jalen Rose for this?
Both these guys are so full of shit
“I’ve done that before and I’m proud of it too” lmfaooooo chuck 😂😂😂😂
Nuggets really are losers.
Chuck the mob boss
If we’re going to cry about this, then Holding the ball should be considered an unwritten rule too, no more holding the ball at the end of games
Shaq be so full of saying crazy ish bout wind mill 😂
Chuck just admitted to having his own Bountygate lol
I don’t care what they do, score or dribble it out, but I believe in consequences for actions so if it’s going there, let’s take it there or remember it going into next game, none of this high school shoving matches and snuggle parties
The biggest lie in this clip is Jalen Rose saying “Jaden McDaniels was protecting Denver’s feelings by not dunking it and laying it up instead.”
Jaden is never trying to protect anyones feelings.
Jalen so good damn
For once, I think I’m on meathead Shaqs side
Bro has to realize he can’t go breaking the written rules to personally enforce the unwritten ones.
Why jokic do the “roll up the window” motion with his arms when he run?
There’s rules. Like don’t stick your teammates mouthpiece in your ass
If you don’t like getting scored on with a few seconds left when you’re taking belt to ass then stop it you whiny bums. This ain’t the grade school league, this is the pros.
