I got too emotionally invested to pay close enough attention, but our defense completely walled them off of quality shots the last 18 minutes even with Bryant at C.

I was surprised how fast we began to dominate after looking very shaky earlier in the game and super competitive all of game 2.

Probably the biggest thing was Jrue needing rest. He was a massive problem on both ends vs any defender and any ball handler on the other end. Celtics really had an all time great team the last couple years. Too bad for them they went ice cold and the variability killed them against NY.

Had every right to do so. For the first 3 quarters, the Spurs offensive game plan was to drive and shoot a contested layup or floater. There was 0 concept of a drive and kick until Harper composed the offense. Spurs shotmaking relied on a Vassel or Champaigne bail out in their 6 second offense. Then, their first 4 possessions were to give Fox or whoever the greenlight on contested threes.

Harper played like a vet w/ his decision-making. Everything seemed to slow down when he had the ball.

Scoot had a good scoring game, but my god he treated this game like a regular season game and he egged on Dylan Harper. A veteran NBA experience person like Ime or even Billups would’ve gave him a tough talk.

Deni had a really bad game and either he didn’t realize it or didn’t care. Either way that’s a dangerous mentality to have. He wasn’t moving without the ball and it felt like he had RJ Barrett level of tunnel vision towards the rim.

Lastly, Splitter did not make the appropriate adjustments. I understand point-Deni and I see its benefits, but Jrue was having a great first half. You make Jrue the point and it frees up everyone because the Spurs want to stop him. I just chalk this up as Splitter never playing point guard so he wouldn’t get this perspective.

Deni has been a consistent driver to the rim all season and he has gotten a very friendly whistle for crashing into defense to draw contact. When that faded to playoff level whistles, and the Spurs stoppe biting so hard, it stifled his whole game. This isn’t new, it’s the system they used all year.

I do think Jrue was being great off the ball too, Splitter/the line up just didn’t use his ability to open lanes at all, they’d just shoot spot up three’s and settle for some contested middie.

This is an awesome matchup, even without Wemby today. The Spurs just staying fucking winning in all aspects in basketball. The coach, GM, scouting, whatever else. They’ve got a squad that just plays together. I remember being scared about the Fox, Castle and Harper triple guard lineup. But it still works damn well. Shoutout to UConn alum Steph Castle and the Rook Harper. These guys are all so young but they play so poised. The Blazers are on the same boat too. Despite the shit with their owner, they’re built like another version of this Spurs roster too.

Jrue is so good, and Scoot is so fucking dumb. Your team is bleeding points, Harper’s killing you all quarter, then you jaw at him and give the Spurs a free point in a close game, and then Harper continues to kill you while you do basically nothing to stop it.

I expect Fox to get traded in the next year or two. Not because he’s bad, I’m just insanely high on the Castle/Harper backcourt. Their abilities to score and defend are definitely going to be higher than his, so you can’t justify starting him over them forever, and his contract is too high for a 6th man role. Get another wing/forward and they’re much better off

Portland just has no one can consistently create their own shot, compared to how many can on the Spurs.

Shaedon, Camara aren’t really doing anything. Clingan slows the entire offense down to get himself into position to score. Robert Williams isn’t anything more than a lob threat. Thybulle has never been a scoring threat in his career.

Agreed, with caveats. Shaedon and Camara do have to step up. Clingan is not a scoring center, probably won’t ever be (great player though). Williams with two dead knees had 3 blocks in 3 minutes at the end of the 1st half and that’s what he’s known for. And yes, Thybulle is a defensive pest only. You guys are the better team right now, obviously, and we’re just hoping to make it a good battle.

EDIT: I see Williams with only 2 blocks recorded, my bad.
