GREENSBORO, N.C. — Two-time NBA champion J.R. Smith will graduate from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University during spring 2026 commencement, earning a Bachelor of Arts in liberal studies–applied cultural thought from the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, the university announced.
Smith, who joined N.C. A&T after his professional basketball career, enrolled as a student and became part of the university’s men’s golf program. His graduation marks the completion of a college journey that began after years competing at the highest level of professional basketball.
Smith is a two-time NBA champion and the NBA Sixth Man of the Year for 2013. Over a 16-season professional career, he played for the New Orleans Hornets, Denver Nuggets, New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers. He entered the NBA straight from high school before later turning his focus to higher education. His transition from NBA veteran to college student-athlete was featured in the Prime Video docuseries Redefined and has been cited as an example of continuing education and personal growth.
University officials say Smith’s path underscores the idea that it is never too late to pursue higher education, take on new challenges and redefine personal goals.
Smith is expected to speak ahead of commencement about his experience at A&T, the significance of earning his degree and the message he hopes to share with others considering their own educational paths.
N.C. A&T will hold two undergraduate commencement ceremonies Saturday, May 9, at First Horizon Coliseum at the Greensboro Complex. The ceremonies will be livestreamed. The 2:30 p.m. ceremony will include graduates from the Willie A. Deese College of Business and Economics, the College of Science and Technology and the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, including Smith. The commencement speaker is Queen Latifah.
