I think it was a good tactic. A lot of coaching besides the obvious X’s and O’s is inspiring confidence in your team. I mean, at the end of the day, you either win or lose and anything that can inspire or motivate is smart.

Any time a coach does something that risks clownage I generally give them grace. They are being paid millions but their jobs are incredibly insecure and based on the whims of people who don’t know what they are doing.

I maintain the right to clown them despite the win too, though. What do you mean you didn’t watch tape??

fans are pretty horrible judges of coaching for the most part. unless you really know basketball deeply, ideally from personal experience (or you’re a really intense superfan if not) and dive heavily into film and lineup data and stuff, i have no faith in your ability to meaningfully critique the tactical decisions an nba coach is making. the worst nba coaches know far more about basketball than 99.99% of this subreddit ever will. they also know the players on a personal level and see them in practice all season. what may be a reasonable tactical suggestion in a vacuum might also be an adjustment a coach rightly suspects will hurt a player’s confidence, buy-in, or long term development more than it advantages their team. coaches are balancing way more tactical and psychological factors than most fans even consider.

it’s one thing to observe from afar that a team feels like they’re not as connected or consistent in their habits as a better coach might be able to bring out of them, or that a recent coaching change seems to have changed a team’s intuitive feel and the win/loss record in a noticeable way. i’m not saying these observations have no merit. but they’re extremely imprecise and subject to oversimplification or incorrect assumption. there’s a huge difference between “it feels to me like this team doesn’t play off each other as well as they should, and i think another coach might maximize their talent better” and “X coach is fucking garbage. obviously they need to bench this player and start that player and tell that other player to shoot more threes and they’d be a way better team”

That’s people’s response to anything. They can’t understand that a decision can be sound with a bad result and vice versa.
