New to the franchise and I’m so happy with my experience so far! What draws you to this game, and why do you play who you play?
There are a number of reasons I’m drawn to the genre as a whole. For PoE2, in particular, it’s the concept of getting in to GGG’s mad laboratory on the ground floor. I play PoE1 casually, I found it far too late and cannot really even conceive of closing the knowledge gap. So, I don’t have much motivation to pursue it, which is a shame, because everyone who has crossed that gap seems to greatly enjoy themselves. I’d like to have that experience with PoE2.
If they copy PoE1 with their content release cycle then in a few years you’ll be just as lost, so many changes happen league to league never mind the larger patches they occasionally do
The “hope” I have for PoE2 in comparison is that the UI is MUCH better explaining what stuff do, still have more to desire of course but still. PoE has it’s place as the most complex arpg out there and it has it’s pros and cons
I know what you about mean about poe1. I have almost 600 hours and I feel like I’m not even close to crossing that gap. I’m still loving it, but I’m still so confused sometimes.
I’m probably at like 2k hours, been playing since PoE1 beta, still got no idea what half of anything does. Fun as heck, though.
The base experience is just so good for 2 and i guess the same goes for 1 as well. Same as you i play fairly casually and just love experimenting with different skills - there is this physicality and heft to so many of the skills that really gets me immersed when playing. Just reminds me of D2 a ton. I dont really go into late game and refined builds and combos and still love the moment to moment combat.
I never understood this way of thinking. Are you going to skip a beautiful game because other people have way more knowledge in it than you? For real?????? :| Go SSF or HCSSF, who cares about others, all that matters is that YOU! are having fun.
It’s “analysis paralysis” more than keeping up with competition. I had a similar reaction and quit my first season in 2017 when I opened the passive tree and saw my life flash before my eyes (I knew I would need a year to feel confident playing)
Wasn’t until I retried during legacy league and followed a build guide that the game finally clicked for me sort of
I think you misunderstood my inclusion of other people in my original statement. I am not bothered that other people know more than I do. I’m sure that’s true in just about every area of my life.
The sheer wall of knowledge, stacked upon itself for years, in what is widely recognized as the most complicated and nigh impenetrable game in the genre, is both the allure and the deterrent.
The fact that other people understand it is part of what I find cool. The fact that they’re engaged with it with said understanding is exactly what I’d like to obtain. They didn’t get bored once they learned it, they still find it enjoyable. That’s cool.
But I don’t personally see a way of scaling PoE1 at this point. Is that clearer?
I am not out to compete with Ben. PoE1 itself is just a benemoth I can’t really wrap my head around at this point without the incremental knowledge expansion that comes with being involved with something early. In fact, I don’t think this is as uncommon as you’re making it out to be. I’d even go so far as to say it’s part of why PoE2 exists, beyond just diverging too far to be a patch for PoE1.
If you ever decide to try again, a well established build guide from someone like Pohx or Palsteron will power level your personal knowledge base. I built my knowledge up over years of piloting various other people’s builds across different classes.
I will answer those questions with:

Jokes aside. GGG is a pretty awesome company. POE2 has some pretty great vibes for whatever floats your boat.
If you like dark magic, you should also try Acolyte of Chayula with Blackflame Covenant caster build. Purple flame is pretty sick.
That’s literally the path I’m following now! Picked monk, looked around the tree and found blackflame, beelined to that, felt like fate when I picked my ascendancy and saw the acolyte tree!
same, galvanic shards witch hunter forever
exploring self-made builds is what really makes this exciting for me
The atmosphere
I like mace and exploding monster
I red “exploring monsters” and I was disappointed for a bit why everything need to be sexulized lmao
I absolutely love the slow pace of the campaign. Later endgame gets too fast, too warframey for me. Creating new classes and levelling as them, listening to their unique interactions is fun to me.
Playing 1 different class per league. Next league I’m gonna play crossbows (probably witchhunter)
Some random gave me tabula rasa with 6 white slots on my first day on POE. I didn’t know what it was until later. I love the story and that’s why I play the game now. But back then it was all about beating Kitava.
The god sin is clumsy to say the least.
When i was a kid my favorite game was a facebook game Buddy Rush and not exactly but POE 2 feels like it ,ofc there are other reasons but thats enough
My toons become stronger every league
Overall, for me i’d say it’s the quality of the game and the developer.
As much complaining as you see on the subreddits and youtube, GGG is still (at least from my experience) the single best company when it comes to pushing out good content at a relatively incredible speed, while also realizing a lot of player feedback.
For a free2play game (yes, there’s an ea fee) with the only scummy thing being 2-3 mandatory stash tabs, the game has stayed incredibly clear of annoying free2play practices. I’ve played another game that is praised for it’s amazing free2play approach, Warframe, but despite its premium currency problem being … circumventable, the game is still riddled with scummy free2play monetization systems that degrade the experience the game provides. Imo PoE really is a staple of how free2play live service can work and i’ve yet to find another game/dev team like this one.
Tl;dr: Great quality game from great developers, who actually prioritize improving the game instead of trying to force growth through scummy practices.
Sorc. I have simple desires.
Sorc is the best!
The progression in speed and power, engaging in an active and growing economy, chasing high tier crafts and items to min/max my build, and the overall atmosphere and feel of gameplay.
If nothing much changes in terms of overall character speed I will be playing Glacial Lance Deadeye. I want to move fast while being able to attack, and ice skills are just so good in PoE2. The crunch and shattering of enemies is tremendously satisfying.
The idea that i can craft something different than any other item in the market is why i play. I’ve never played an ARPG before POE2, so i’m not sure how crafting looks in other games, but yeah crafting is what made me wanna play, this league was my 1st league and i got 700 hours already, learned all about crafting and made massive profits.
The slot machine loop and builds with multiple progression stages where saving up for that next unique item feels like an insane power spike.
OP, what are some of your favorite dark magic games? I ask because you mentioned they had your grip for decades!
True replayability, constant surprise of different loot, strategical farming, gameplay experience binded to progression (getting better and better), … Poe 1 and Poe 2 are the only games I can feel they try to be the best and excel at what they do. Even with so many negatives, this game is the only thing I want to play right now. No competitors for me. It’s king
I see you’ve got the most important thing covered - to look good.
I play sorc because she can command djinns
I play pretty much melee only because i love the feeling of smackin mobs in combat
