Smart’s impact has never been truly represented. It’s the reason he’s so controversial.

You have to watch him to understand and this is a fanbase/culture that doesn’t watch games.

One playoff series we put him on Giannis for a full quarter. Smart was picking him up full court. There was a play where Giannis tried to force the switch via calling for screens. He kept calling for screens and Smart kept fighting over them to stay on his assignment.

Giannis tried to switch onto Brown, Tatum and eventually Horford (who was his primary defender for the series). 6’11 and at the time the best player in the world… Running away from our 6’3 PG.

There’s no stat for that.

There’s also no stat to show how everytime Karl-Anthony Towns got a new teammate in Minnesota they’d try to pass to him in the “post mismatch” against Smart, and Towns would pass the ball straight back to them.

Paul Milsap was having the best game of his career against Boston in the 2016 playoffs. He had +40 in 3 quarters and nothing the team did was working. Brad Stevens throws Smart on him, and in a game that went to OT, the only time Milsap scored for the rest of the night was when Smart left him to shut down somebody else for a possession.

And then you can go watch prime Harden in the post game interview looking like a Vietnam Vet going through traumatic flashbacks.

When we first got Derrick White the Celtics sub was flooded with Spurs fans saying we’d love him because he was just as switchable as Smart.

White’s been great, and beats him out in certain areas, but you put him on someone like Siakam and he needs help. Smart never needed help.
