Sam Antonacci hits his first career HR on an inside-the-park HR that gets touched by stadium personnel. Ruled not reviewable.
for sure the weirdest first career home run of all time
A 57 foot BOMB for the kid’s first home run
Honestly fitting his first home run happens like this.
He’s gonna get clowned about that for a while by the boys.
He did have a huge home run against USA for Italy this year so it’s not like he hasn’t had his moment already
yeah it’s kinda bullshit but that’s why you can’t give up on the play
I never understood why players give up on plays
Eh. This one is one of those things where he should actually not be fielding the ball, and just be calling for interference. The issue with what happened is he didn’t call or signal for interference, then went to field the ball when he realized the play wasn’t called dead. As soon as he touches that ball without calling interference, it’s considered live, unreviewable.
Yeah as soon as he decides to make an effort, that’s like his own action validating the play is live.
Lourdes should have at least been frantically waving interference if he was refusing to touch the ball.
It might have helped in this instance but that shouldn’t be expected of Gurriel. It wasn’t a stuck ball that an ump had to inspect. The umpires should just call it a ground rule double when it very fucking obviously touches the ball boy. The Sox announcers both knew it instantly, as did I watching at home, so the umps should have been able to see it and call it dead immediately
he should probably play until the play is killed. Him going after the ball or not has nothing do with it being interference or not. The players don’t call it, the umpire does. If the ball had hit the ball person unintentionally, then its correctly a live ball
It would have been deemed unreviewable whether he touched the ball or not. The only interference calls that can be reviewed are spectator interference, catcher’s interference, and the slide rule at 2nd/home. That’s it. Since the ball boy is considered approved on field personnel, it’s treated the same as umpire’s interference and isn’t reviewable.
This happened in the Jays game last week… apparently there are two rules for authorized personnel. One for if they accidentally touch the ball, another for if they purposely touch it. The umps got together and placed the batter/runner at 2nd. It’s not an automatic ground rule double.
Rule 6.01 (D): In case of unintentional interference with play by any person herein authorized to be on the playing field (except members of the team at bat who are participating in the game, or a base coach, any of whom interfere with a fielder attempting to field a batted or thrown ball; or an umpire) the ball is alive and in play. If the interference is intentional, the ball shall be dead at the moment of the interference and the umpire shall impose such penalties as in his opinion will nullify the act of interference.
Why don’t players know the fucking rules then?
They have scrooge mcducks pools of money random reddit guys know they game better than they do?!?????!
Looks badass. Look how unbothered he is while those runs score 😎
I had a moment of “oh, the Lourdes Gurriel experience” for sure
Aren’t you not supposed to field balls that, like, get stuck under padding in the outfield? Idk how this is different
You’re not supposed to touch a ball stuck in the padding. Call interference and let the umps place the base runners.
You’re supposed to stop and throw your hands up to signal interference and force the umps to make a call, not just lollygag around like Lourdes did here. Once you realize the ump isn’t calling the play dead you have to make a play.
Yeah, is the fielder just supposed to play on like normal when it CLEARLY touched the staff person? It’s like the equivalent of expecting an outfielder to hop over the fence to field a ground-rule-double. MLB should fix it so something like this is reviewable.
No it’s the equivalent of it hitting an umpire after passing infielders
Absolutely bizarre game. Ball gets stuck in Arenado’s glove. B2B2B. TWICE Doug Eddings overrules players who clearly challenged pitches in time. Now this (hate to admit it but) absolute bullshit call on the field. Entertaining as hell but if I’m a DBacks fan I’d be fuming
Also Marte thrown out at home trying to score from 2nd on a swinging bunt, Mune 4 games in row with a HR, Perreira two diving catches, and currently a position player pitching to the guy who cranked it in the Burger King parking lot
I thought it was a Dollar Tree parking lot.
Ah you’re right I was thinking of myself
this game is fucking awesome ngl
Now I’m wondering if a player has ever hit a triple and an inside-the-park HR in the same game. Definitely back in the day, but since parks got smaller? Trying to look it up but it’s tough because HRs aren’t differentiated in the box score
At the risk of sounding like Peter Gammons I’d confidently say he’s probably the only player to hit his first home run as an inside-the-parker and a triple in the same game in this century
Matt Chapman did it in this ballpark 575 days ago
As for first? God knows. Trying to search for first home run would be a mare.
Jfc that’s insane lol gotta love baseball
I still cannot understand why the carjacker is on this team.
really? it’s pretty obvious hes just holding it down until Teel comes back
I don’t even think Korey Lee is good, but he could have done that without having a criminal record for public masturbation.
I think the white Sox deserve to win this game, so it’s not really that annoying. If this moment cost us the game, then it’d be different.
I’m actually more annoyed that this happened last week too (golden glover intentionally interfering with a fair ball.)
Even with ABS, Doug Eddings is inevitable
Oof Doug eddings
it is kind of crazy u cant review that
How does it even get reviewed? Automatic double like a fly ball that bounces over the wall?
Should be like spectator interference - ball is dead, and the umpires decide where to put the runners. Probably could have put guys on 2nd and 3rd here.
Though now that I think about it, maybe this is more like a ball hitting an umpire, because the ball boy has the right to be on the field.
If a ball hits an umpire before it passes a fielder it’s a dead ball. If a ball passes the infielders and then hits an umpire, it’s in play.
If the ball boy had a better glove we wouldn’t have this problem. He has to look that ball into the pocket.
In the past, I’ve seen ball boy interference ruled differently if it was for or against the home team. I’m thinking that’s why the umps didn’t call anything, I assume they saw the ball boy touched it, but he hurt the home team in doing so, so play on.
This ump crew has been a masterclass in incompetence tonight. This was just the cherry on top.
Someone can correct me, but we saw interference from “non player personnel” the other day in our game, and I believe they said that if the person allowed to be on the field makes contact with the ball unintentionally, the ball is still live and play continues. It is only if the person tries to grab the ball that it is dead (which happened in the Jays game).
So even if this had been reviewable, if that rule was explained correctly, I think it would have stood. Gurriel was standing in front of a live ball
Edit: nvm, on second watch this dude did try to grab it for… some reason
This is definitely someone trying to grab the ball though. They just failed to glove it.
Ah, yeah, on second watch you’re right. It was going right to him and he had time to get out of the way but instead set up like he was the damn shortstop.
In the Jays game the other day, the guy fully extended his arm to grab the ball so it was super obvious
I’m wondering if it the same guy.
Nah ours was an old guy lol
This guy is old too.
So, the relevant rule here would most likely be 6.01(d) - Unintentional Interference. Rule text:
In case of unintentional interference with play by any person herein authorized to be on the playing field (except members of the team at bat who are participating in the game, or a base coach, any of whom interfere with a fielder attempting to field a batted or thrown ball; or an umpire) the ball is alive and in play. If the interference is intentional, the ball shall be dead at the moment of the interference and the umpire shall impose such penalties as in his opinion will nullify the act of interference
My guess would be that the umpires ruled it unintentional interference, which I don’t know if I agree with. Live it kinda looked like the ball boy was trying to shy away from the ball (after initially wanting to catch it) but realized his mistake too late and still deflected the ball. In slow mo it looks like he’s trying to field it the whole time. So I don’t know.
As for the review, I would guess that it’s unreviewable because unintentional/intentional is a judgement call and they never let NY weigh in on that. Which I think is dumb. If you’re concerned about the subjectivity of judgement calls, let the calling umpire (and maybe the crew chief) use ipads to watch the play back. Maybe the umpire sees something to confirm his judgement, or maybe he realizes he missed something in the moment.
Very likely just assumed it was foul and forgot to watch the ump. The way he looks at the dude next to him and then back at the first base ump, I’m pretty sure the other dude was trying to tell him it was a live ball.
Ah yes, the 57ft home run, nothing unsual
Antonacci homered to left (57 feet), Pereira scored.
Launch angle 10 degrees
How is the interference not reviewable??
You have to call for interference for it to be reviewed. He didn’t signal interference, then fielded the ball, so it’s considered a live ball.
I do not know why this is how it is.
That’s the funniest thing ever. “It has to be what I called or it’s not reviewable”
That’s not the way it is at all.
Lol.
Lmao, even.
I saw this play on Real say “2-run 57’ inside the park homer lasered to left” at 1 degree launch angle and NEEDED to see this.
ESPN app said “57 feet”
Hmm surely that’s a mistake
Checks Twitter
It was not a mistake
Ladies and gentlemen, the 2026 White Sox.
So by the rules, that should have been a dead ball right?
Also why is fan interference reviewable, but personnel interference not? Makes no sense.
This was a nothing burger because of the score but plays like these are mind blowing to me. What was the ball person doing? This was the most obvious fair ball of all time.
Looking at the moment it crosses 3B, yeah, that’s pretty far fair, but it hooks harder than you’d normally expect, and the ball person is going through the motions that are correct 99% of the time.
That’s the worst ruling I’ve ever seen
LOL. An ump took away a perfect game. This is a minor league mistake compared to that.
How did the third base umpire not call interference? He watched it happen!
This woulda happened to us in past years. Also you gotta just play through that, at worst its a triple.
This game is just infuriating
Baseball is good
This ball guy touched it on a Andres Giménez double when the Jays were there a couple days ago as well.
Is that the same guy who touched a fair ball during the Jays matchup a few nights ago?
Similar thing happened with the Jays and diamondbacks. Gimenez hit a ball down the right field the ball guy touched it and he was given second base.
Gotta still run after that Lourdes. Keep playing until they rule it dead.
It’s the wrong call, but you gotta finish the play.
Total BS call. I mean I’ll take the runs, but it’s still BS
What’s going on in Arizona where all the ball boys try to catch fair balls 😭
How is nobody talking about this?? Bro had his gameface on, he was ready to fire it to second
And last week they called interference on a ball hit to RF where the ball grandpa also touched the ball, Corbin Carroll did not call for interference and instead they threw out the runner at home. But the umpires still called the interference and out the runners on the bases.
So they’re just making it up as they go it seems
that’s a really stupid call but also how the hell do you not get the ball in regardless
This is the 2nd time in the last few days the ball person in Arizona had interfered with a ball in play.
Guy in right grabbed Andres Gemenez’s shot down the line in the 7th inning of Friday’s game. Time to refresh the ground rules with the help.
Similar thing happened in a blue jays game, after discussing it they called it a dead ball and awarded second base.
https://www.sportsnet.ca/mlb/video/blue-jays-gimenez-awarded-second-base-after-personnel-interference/
Dead or live ball is at the discretion of the umpires with interference from authorized personnel.
I swear the WBC expresó machine sent us down a weird timeline, he’s done this twice this year lmao
??????? What
One thing my coach always hammered into us is that you are not the ump you will not make the decision so finish the play and find out what the umps decide after.
oh yeah baby, inject this shit into my veins.
Fuck Ryan Thompson
Fire up the cappuccino machine
Interesting…
Karma for Thompsons most recent ig post
I hope that ball boy remembers this play because if it happens again, he needs to just let it go “and to not touchy” that ball.
Hey I was there
CHRIS DENORFIA SIGHTING!!!
(After quick research, found out that he’s the White Sox field coordinator! So happy for him!)
I hate how players just give up. I’m assuming it’s bc there are so many games or something.
Like wtf dude, yeah, it hit staff or whatever, so… that means you know exactly what the ump is gonna rule and you just stand there?!
I absolutely fucking refuse to believe this didn’t happen to the Mets
