Mets fans, including one wearing a paper bag, deliver insults to Devin Williams after he walks a run home
Williams couldn’t handle the ridicule from New York fans last year so he left the Yankees and went to… the other New York team
Maybe he thought that the fans in Queens would be nicer than the ones in the Bronx. He was very wrong. New Yorkers are New Yorkers no matter the borough.
Except for Staten Island. No idea wtf is going on there.
SI is mostly Yankee territory. The sociology of NY sports fandom is really interesting. It’s geographic and also ethnic/cultural in a lot of cases. Italian Americans in the city are to a great extent part of Yankees culture - lots of iconic Italian Yankee stars, DiMaggio, Rizzuto and Berra especially, at a formative time for Italian American culture and identity. Staten Island is the most homogenous borough and the predominant group is Italian Americans.
With other cities that have two teams, I wonder how the fandom breaks down across the population. How are White Sox and Cubs fans different, for example?
Sometimes it’s less interesting. For example the Dodgers have fans, and the Angels don’t.
Edit: adding Mariners flair now.
Not the same thing. The Dodgers are in LA and the Angels are not in LA city or LA county. There is also a huge difference between LA county and Orange County and the fans of each team reflect that difference.
What do you mean, clearly we’re called the Los Angeles Angels and nobody would ever be dumb enough to name a team after a city and county they aren’t even located in.
San Francisco 49ers here to support the Los Angeles Angels
I grew up in LA and knew like one Angels fan and I think he did it for contrarian reasons. This was pre-Mark Walter so the Angels were actually doing better than the Dodgers for a good stretch of the decade. I always thought “Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim” sounded goofy af
cubs and sox fans mostly differ by their tax brackets
Cubs fans are from the rich part of town and like to drink in wrigleyville gastropubs.
Sox fans like baseball and like to drink all the time.
You would too if Jerry reinsdorf owned your team.
Sox and Cubs it’s very regional for the most part. You do see Cubs fans on the Southside though and I do see a number of Sox fans on the Northside too.
I wouldn’t say there’s any real racial or cultural demographic change though. It’s very much just what part of the area you’re from most of the time.
Cubs fans are north side (richer) and largely the rich white transplants. Sox are the south side, so largely blue collar and the transplants who wouldn’t pay 4k for a studio + people who hate that brand of yuppie.
Source: I live in Chicago and go to Sox games because they are cheap and I don’t have to go anywhere near wrigleyville
This is what goes on in Staten Island
“Devin Williams thought Mets fans would be kind, making him tonight’s BIGGEST LOSER”
“Ok, Devin. Now load the bases and walk home a run without recording an out.”
it’s mostly where we store our cops when they’re not on duty and/or moonlighting on security jobs while also still getting paid OT by the department
They’re more into football.
Checkmate Haters
money talks and shit pitching walks
Fans think baseball players can’t always spot their change up because of…..the fans?
And not because playing baseball is just inherently very difficult?
The fans have essentially zero impact on the outcome. You aren’t scaring the players or motivating them. They’re playing baseball at the highest level against other elite athletes, you aren’t making them run faster or throw more accurately.
Devin has to be one of the most hated people in the city.
Bin Ladin would’ve had him, but he’s dead
Come to r/baseball for the baseball news and memes, stay for the Williams/Bin Laden comparisons
I didn’t even know he was sick.
He was just a 54 year old kid!!!
Fair enough but at least he didn’t live here!
Even Bin Ladin may have looked better without a beard
Bin Laden the Afghani financier?
Mendoza should be the one wearing this bag
The poor kid is about to go to the Raiders, leave him alone
As a Raiders fan is been very funny to have a Mendoza in desperate to have off my team, and a Mendoza I can’t wait to have on my team.
Part of me is hoping we fire the NY Mendoza Thursday to even it out for me officially
Really running a very sophisticated addiction rehab program
Plot twist - it’s David Stearns in disguise
It’s cruel and unusual punishment to not hire him at this point t
Mets fans & Yankees fans agreeing that we don’t like Devin Williams
Devin, you sonovabitch
blue hoodie guy is having more fun cursing Williams than he would be if they were on a 12 game winning streak
It’s the god given right of every new yorker to berate, heckle and boo.
“Being miserable, and treating other people like dirt, is every New Yorker’s God-given right!”
I’ve never met than man before in my life and yet somehow I know exactly who he is
lmfao
The AirBlunder
I’m shocked and saddened that we didn’t come up with this one last year
I heard the scorebender last year and almost died laughing
Mets fans gotta get a W somewhere, I’m all for it being the Devin Williams mockery competition. They got three years to come up with some serious bangers.
We were too busy crying every time he took the mound.
I am paper bag man AMA
Where’d you get the bag?
Found it floating outside metlife stadium
what is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?
you talking african or european?
Would the camera have broken if it saw you without the bag?
As a Yankees fan I’m glad we got that burden off our shoulders.
I sure glad he isn’t a Yankee anymore
If you look at his stuff, he still has everything he needs to be one of the best in the game, but he is in his head a bit atm
He’s got the stuff but no control. And with a pitch that has so much movement that’s a problem.
Broken is an understatement. Devin really needs to be back in AAA and then playing for an underdog team or one with no fan base, like the marlins or twins, until he gets his head out his own ass.
If mental fortitude was on the stat card he would be in the bottom 1%. You could just tell he was going to blow this one as soon as he went ball 4 on the first batter.
This was the case last year as well. You could practically watch him give up on the mound. His whole body language changes. In low-pressure situations his stuff is absolutely disgusting, but he completely folds when the heat is on.
Or maybe throwing a 2500 RPM change up at 85 MPH to the best hitters in the world is just inherently hard to do?
He’s not missing his spots because….of the fans. Only a fan could think that.
The fans don’t influence his wind up or location. He’s had unbelievable whiff and chase stuff this year. Better K and walk rates than the rest of his career. But it doesn’t matter if you’re off even once, baseball is that volatile and based on such small samples.
It’s hard. The hitters are incredible. If you’re a little off, your going to miss the zone and walk guys because you have to be spot on.
Fans….don’t care about the reality of what it’s like to actually pitch at such a high level. So they make up stories about how….it’s the fans that are causing the results and that it’s all mental actually.
You can only call stuff good when you are getting outs. He stunk as a yankee and he is stinking it up as a met. Im not even a Mets fan. Its a hard reality, that D. Williams is not mentally suited to be a closer. He might have great pitches, rpm, vertical movement, or whatever during practice, but it all fizzles out during the 9th inning.
You can only call stuff good when you are getting outs.
Right, results oriented, not process oriented.
that D. Williams is not mentally suited to be a closer.
Right. Parasocial relationship with a stranger.
These…..are the defining characteristics of being a fan. Not focused on the process, reacting only based on the results and thinking you understand a stranger’s mentality.
The reality is….it’s hard. You can throw great stuff, get a tons of swings and misses, have less walks than your career average, but if you’re a little off and walk three in an outing after only walking 3 combined your first seven appearances you’ll get blasted.
Strangers will pretend they know what’s happening in your mind.
And critique your ability to pitch when…..they have no idea how to do what you do. Their advice is about….your mindset and because it’s what city you’re in. And not….you know, the actual mechanics of pitching.
If he could just “think harder” and that made him throw strikes. He would have done that. The realities of honing your wind-up and what it’s like to actually pitch and hit your spots have nothing to do with the fans.
According to Mr. Process over here, Devin just forgot to put any points into the luck stat when he left the character creation screen lol. Some guys just not cut out for closing games, just how we are not cut out to be MLB players. With all your excuses for Devin, im suspecting you must be leader of the the Devin Williams fan club.
I do like Devin Williams. I like….all baseball players, they’re all incredible athletes. Why else would I like and watch baseball?
Devin’s change-up is an incredible thing! Who could say they like baseball and not be a fan of it?
But they’re subjected to morons who don’t even know what the rules of pitching are or what a balk is judging them.
Having parasocial relationships with you and judging that you are “not cut out for closing games” on the basis of nothing.
They think that’s pitching analysis. He doesn’t need your expert opinion that he needs to try harder. None of them do, it’s WHY the players don’t like the parasocial weirdos who make up the fanbase.
We must be watching baseball in different realities. Devin was ass a few days ago and He was ass today along with 90% of the mets team. You must be drunk or straight out low IQ if they look like they are out there enjoying going to games and telling each other, “yeah we lost 12 games in a row but did you see Devins air bender after he walked those 4 guys in a row? Man he sucks balls when it counts but his stuff is really good. I know this internet baseball guru called bitorontoguy that says Devin will turn it around soon, and all those parasocial fans are going to have eat shit when he does”. You want to see good stuff? Go watch Mason Miller twist knees and make guys poop their pants with 103 heaters. Dude’s gonna win the Cy Young. And I put my money where my mouth is cuse I just dropped all my paycheck on Miller in Kalshi. But you do you and continue to be a Willleaver lol.
I miss Luke weaver. They rushed him from an injury and then put him to clean up Williams mess smfh
We’ll always have late 2024 Luke Weaver. What a stud.
I read a novel set in New Orleans once where the guy bought a Caddy from an old-school Saints fan, so much that the car was decked out in black and gold and still had a paper bag with the eyes cut out from the Arch Manning days in the glove compartment.
Classic move. Love the bag heads
Same
It’s not even May
Yeah, Mets will suck
Silence is the better plan. Let them play for empty seats.
Deja Vu for Williams.
I had Mets fans talking shit all offseason about how Devin was gonna be a star for them. Lmao
You Mets sure are a contentious people.
Nice game, pretty boy
Imagine paying this trashcan and then making him your main reliever lmao. Yall deserve to be in the dumpster. He’s horrible!!!!
The losses will continue until morale improves
Devin Williams deciding to go from the Yankees to the Mets is such a stupid choice, the guy is not made for the New York market
This looks like a scene from an Adam Sandler movie.
Don’t worry mets fans i’ll save the season
And who are YOU?
“Yeah take that, ownership!!!!! As I financially incentivize this dump by paying you my hard earned money to be here”
I wonder if Yankees “fans” still think he can handle New York
