Devin Williams with a Yes Hitter in the top of the 9th for the Mets: 0.0IP 1H 2R 2ER 3BB
Austin Warren relieved and immediately struck out the next 3 batters.
Relief pitchers randomly turning ass after being elite for a few years is why I dont lose sleep on not spending a ton on them lol
Pete Alonso’s homerun in WC G3 in 2024 may have literally altered his career.
Genuinely I think it did impact him somewhat. He was terrible in high leverage situations last year but was still a good reliever outside of that.
Low and Medium Leverage: 2.98 ERA, 2.24 FIP
High Leverage: 8.69 ERA, 3.64 FIP
Pairing him as a set up man with Diaz like the Mets wanted might have been a good idea but he’s not a guy you want closing
Give Luke a go at this point. Let Warren close. It legit cannot get worse than this.
Been there buddy. I have said those exact words before.
Let Warren close I have said those exact words
Let Warren close
I have said those exact words
Man, I would love for that to be the case some day, but I don’t think he’s there yet.
The Devin Williams Experience will be something all New Yorkers can bond over now.
He got Lidged. Although Brad Lidge returned to form after a bit
Like 3 years later?
He was a good-to-great closer every year outside of 2006 and 2009
If pujols didn’t break lidge he wouldn’t have been on the phillies in 2008
I know I was destroyed from it lol dude is washed
The 2024 postseason broke two of the best relievers in the game.
Who’s the other one
That’s why guys like Mariano Rivera and Trevor Hoffman are so special. It’s not just the stuff and ability, but the longevity and consistency.
It’s also the ability to rebound after the rare times they get beat in late inning situations.
Devin Williams may have just been broken by Alonso a few years back whereas Mo failed in some of the most memorable moments ever and went back out there and was otherwise still unhittable. Just an incredible ability to shrug it off.
Not only that, Mo has gone on record saying he’s glad he lost one of those big games, because if the Yankees won, Enrique Wilson would have been on a plane that crashed.
2001, before anyone asks.
Yes but a different and less known plane that crashed in the NYC area in late 2001

I really should have clarified this
Crazy
Huh. I didn’t know that. Thanks for sharing.
Kenley too
When I get sad about trading our relievers, I remember for Josh Hader there’s a Devin Williams.
Look at Tanner Scott for the dodgers.
They can afford overpaying though, so they are an anomaly.
Scott has been good so far this year and is very likely gonna get another shot at closing again so we’ll see if he pulls it together in the ninth this year
True, but I think the point is that teams like the Dodgers and Mets can afford to pay a reliever top dollar even if they turn into complete ass or are injured for a random half of the contract. Realistically, the Dodgers can afford Scott alternating between all-star and being bad enough to be left of a playoff roster. Same with the Mets and Williams.
The Rays and Brewers just can’t take that risk - even if a guy is a complete shutdown reliever for the half of the time he isn’t ass.
Yeah and even Hader is actually a shaky contract. Astros have paid $40m for a total of 3 WAR from a guy who hasn’t pitched since August and won’t until at least June.
Its what makes Mariano Rivera so amazing. 1 pitch that everyone knows is coming and yet no one can hit it and he did it for 19 freaking years. Every elite reliever seems to have 5 years at most. Chapman is another one who has been amazing for a long time.
Chapman also had a career resurgence. Will always appreciate Yankees giving him to us for half a season lol
Helps that someone finally told him to aim
He has the most movement on his 100+ fastball of any pitcher in history. When he has it working.
He has the movement when it’s not working too. It can be the main problem.
But at some point, after spending millions on our “Pitching Lab” and draft picks, you’d think Jed would run into a quality arm or 2 in the pen.
Of all the criticisms I have of Jed, turning fringe relievers from other teams into solid options is not one of them.
I was SO bummed when the Sox traded Codi Heuer. This is good perspective. Relievers are just so volatile.
Similar to corners in the NFL, as soon as they lose a step they can just fall apart.
“Randomly”? Maybe last year…this year is just more of the same from the year prior
Williams = Babe Ruth Warren = Ernie Shore
His number better be up in the rafters tomorrow, that’s my MVP
I understood that reference
Well played
Devin Williams punched the umpire?
Let’s not dilute the terminology. One hit and three walks does not a Yes Hitter make
Not to mention the fielder’s choice thanks to a poor decision by Vientos on the bunt.
Batting average 1.000, I think it counts
Hold hold on. A no hitter has walks and FCs. A perfect game has no walks.
So where does this leave the Yes Hitter/Perfectly Shit Game?
Yeah but a Yes Hitter doesn’t need to last 27+ batters. We need higher standards on a per-PA basis
There’s no contradiction there, a Yes Hitter is the opposite of a No Hitter. So if a No Hitter can have walks, a Yes Hitter can’t
Basically anything is allowed to preserve a No Hitter EXCEPT for hits, so anything other than a hit breaks a Yes Hitter
Haha I thought it was just a 0.0 IP line with some runs scored
Idk if it’s been solidified but I think it’s more like batting around without an out.
If it’s not comparably rare to a no-hitter it’s an abuse
I still love the term
We sure know when to let go of a guy
Cc is the only one off the top of my head that got away from Milwaukee and had a great career afterwards
CC wasn’t traded by Milwaukee though. Everyone knew he was a rental no way Milwaukee was gonna pay to keep him
Greinke as well, could argue Jean Segura but not in the same stratosphere as the other two.
Fielder :(
CC was so epic in that brief run with the Brewers
It felt like he did like a month of 3 days rest starts and beat the shit out of everyone. iirc he was setting up for yet another one when they got eliminated the day before it happened.
Molitor. Vaughn. Sheffield. Khris Davis. Bichette. Alcides Escobar. Nelson Cruz.
Admittedly not a lot of pitchers
I for one am glad I’m off the Devin Williams’ experience.
has there ever been another single non-injury play that has affected a player so much as Alonso’s HR?
Maybe Lidge?
That’s the best comp, but Lidge eventually got it back.
Williams is still fairly young. He could as well
His fastball is not good enough though, it’s not that effective. He lives on the edge of disaster always and if he loses a tick he’s shot.
If he learns any semblance of command, that change is good enough to earn him at least one undeserved 1 year contract
Bless pujols, we needed lidge in 2008
Took him like 2 years to get out of his head.
brad lidge?
Dave Henderson v. Donnie Moore
ERA got saved by the 2026 MVP
Pete Alonso may have permanently broken this man
He needs to be traded to the O’s to neutralize it
Gotta get this man outta New York for both his mental health and his safety
I was shocked he signed with the mets for this reason (obviously money is quite persuasive)
Seriously though, someone should probably do a wellness check on him and not leave him alone. That looks like a broken man.
This guy fucking sucks lmao. We’ve spent the last 2 seasons clowning on him and now I gotta watch him meltdown in a Mets uniform
AirBlunder
Yes hitter is the funniest term in baseball
Probably obvious or old to everyone but me, but I’ve never heard of a “Yes Hitter” before this week. I just love the Ye Shitter implication.
Agreed
Dude is a straight bum. Can’t believe our idiotic front office thinks our pitching lab works miracles on washed pitchers.
I’m watching the Sabres game and there’s a guy with a Sabres jersey and a Mets hat and I just can’t imagine that level of pain
So glad the lolmets “stole” this guy from us 😂
Never forget this is the guy who changed the jankees facial hair policy
Williams owes Warren a drink.
Damn remember when he was calling out yankee fans and how they sure are mad
lmao
Haven’t been keeping up with this sub in awhile. Is a Yes hitter no batters retired?
Holy cleanup job by Austin Warren
Yes he can
This feels like the game where someone gets the shit beaten out of him in the locker room afterwards, not even necessarily Williams
I don’t know if you can call that a yes hitter, he only gave up one hit. That’s a yep walk.
yikes
I feel for the guy. Gotta be tough when you’re the man and then lose your mojo all of a sudden.
Insane how much this guy has absolutely fallen off a cliff. Ironically, I think the Mets broke Williams in that playoff series against the Brewers when he blew our lead.
I think I’ve gotta drop him tomorrow. That’s enough now.
I’ve got Hoffman and Diaz on my team so the saves category is looking like an L lol
Yes Hitter is my new favorite baseball jargon
I feel like a Yes Hitter should involve more hits. This was a Yes Walker.
Why do they keep trying to make Devin Williams a closer?
Fucking bum screwing my fantasy team.
