I just want to clarify that I was not trying to discredit him at all. I read the part about him leading the entire NBA in total clutch points with 175 points and I thought wow that’s impressive given he doesn’t even play that many close games and wrote what I wrote. I was impressed he still led the entire league in total clutch points while playing fewer clutch games that could contribute to that total. For example, Steph scored a similar number of clutch points when he won in the past but played in around 16 more games to do so. If anything was subtle, it was me subtly pointing out the Thunder’s dominance this season that they won so many games before even the 4th quarter began.

I don’t even think it’s that people care about off-court stuff as much as they think they do. It’s more that they pick and choose when it matters based on how they already feel about the player.

You see it everywhere, not just in sports. Artists, actors, musicians, some people get separated from their work, others get defined by their worst moments. There’s no real consistency to it.

SGA’s kind of the opposite case. By all accounts he’s low drama, family-oriented, no real controversy, and people still find reasons to dislike him anyway.

I think at a certain point it’s just narrative. Once people decide how they feel about a player, everything else gets filtered through that. It’s strange isn’t it?

very deserved. However clutch points per game is kind of misleading. If a team is in a clutch game but the game gets out of reach and the player sits out even 1 minute of that 5 minute game it changes the PPG drastically. For example ANT actually leads the league in clutch points per minute by a hair over shai at 1.44 vs 1.40. Its just ant played 3.9 minutes per clutch game and shai played 4.7. and ant wasnt being benched in the clutch, lol. These numbers are both ridiculously high and seem to be #2 and #3 all time. #1 is Westbrook at 1.66 clutch points per minute in his MVP season. westbrook also has the record for clutch points per possession as well. basically per game kinda doesnt make sense to use for this type of stat and per minute or per possession are better suited.

The NFL doesn’t have the problem of fans hating their superstars. Of course you have the Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes haters, but the league relentlessly markets their biggest stars and for the most part, there isn’t a huge negative discourse after each game about any player.

The NBA is such a soap opera, and it hurts the league when announcers are talking about players being “foul merchants”. It’s either negative discourse around the games or players wanting to move teams. How many fans are tired of hearing about some superstar wanting to force their way out of their situation?? Not just talking about Giannis, even though his situation has really been drawn out and beat to death.

At least clutch has a reasonably clear, prescribed definition, even if it’s somewhat arbitrary. MVP is vague and super subjective as a result, possibly by design, but it’s such a cultural staple across all sports.
