Mason Miller nearing the top of most consecutive scoreless innings from a reliever as his hot streak continues
We were just trying to find a way to get Bob Moose on a graphic tbh
the moose is loose
Way to jinx Mason 😤
right?? nobody say anything, don’t even look at him wrong until he breaks the record 😭
You mean Moose-on Miller
Is there a Bob emergency?
Should have put him 4th. Hader got nothin on the Moose
the bob moose respect is real 😭 man deserves to be on every relievers list
man i forgot how good Ryan Pressly was for a while. insane stud
unfortunate fall off, but man he was electric. and stressful. but good.
IIRC he started bad that year and just locked the fuck in
Pressly in his prime was genuinely elite, one of the most reliable relievers in the game. wild to see his name on this list still
Pressly deserved the 2022 world series MVP in my opinion. Pena was great don’t get me wrong, but Press got a massive 5 out save in game 5 and then the save in game 6
Don’t get it twisted, Bob Moose could pitch!
What a baseball name.
“You’ve just been Moosed!”
Please tell me he threw a knuckleball. A Bob Mooseknuckleball.
“you’ve just been moosed” is the greatest trash talk line that never got used enough 😭
Died tragically at 29 too. Sad stuff
And he successfully transitioned into a lengthy career as the Mariners’ mascot after his playing days ended.
the lore on bob moose just keeps getting better with every comment in this thread 💀
I thought Eric Gagne had the record, I would have lost that bar bet.
Gagne has the record for consecutive saves at 84. That’s what you’re thinking of.
And it’s pronounced GONE-YAY not GAG-KNEE
And it’s pronounced GONE-YAY
Which happens to be the rest of the NL West’s reaction when he left the Dodgers.
Using a word (gone) that’s pronounced very differently depending on the region in a pseudo-phonetic spelling of a name is a bold move.
I’d say it’s more “GAHN-yay” since gone to me is “gawn.” But I’m reading that apparently the stress was always supposed to be more on the second syllable (“gahn-YAY”). Darn Québécois.
he converted a lot of saves in a row, but got lucky some of the saves had tolerance for an earned run or two and he lost some games in that spread by giving up winning runs in a tied game
Is there anything else the equivalent in sports of having a saves streak while also losing games?
LeBron’s nearly unbreakable double-digit scoring streak only counts for the regular season because of his awful 2011 finals against the Mavs, which included an 8-point stinker in a game 4 loss.
Ah nice, good find.
Why limit this to expansion era? Does it have something to do with relievers not really being heavily used before then?
That and some guys might have had 90+
Why would that make them be excluded
Because they did it in 1880 and comparing that to modern mlb doesn’t make sense
Highly doubt anyone’s ever thrown 90+ straight scoreless innings, let alone a reliever lol
Edit: The top 10 longest scoreless inning streaks post 1900 are all starters with Orel Hershiser on top with 59 IP. https://www.mlb.com/news/longest-scoreless-inning-streaks-in-history
If someone had a longer streak in the 1800s I doubt it was a reliever due to them being practically nonexistent back then lol
Probably just to keep it relevant to people in living memory
Fun fact, Zieglers streak was to start his MLB career.
It was a fun few years him and Josh Collmenter were in the same bullpen for the snakes. Collmenter had a straight over the top release angle and would often come in during the 6th or 7th inning so by the time those batters came back around they would go from seeing straight over the top to a submarine style pitching. It messed with a lot of guys.
I was a bat boy for the college summer league team he played for in 2001 and followed him throughout his career from there. He even hooked us up with tickets a few times.
That’s awesome!!
I guess I remember that, but I also totally don’t remember that. 2008 was among the dark times.
I mean not really nearing still needs about 10 more appearances.
Yeah this feels like jinx bait with him 1 inning away from tying the Padres franchise record.
I want ESPN to do for Miller what they did for Judge’s home run race where they just smash into random events like the Indy 500 with Mason buckling fuckers at 104 then dipping out
At least there’d be progress towards the record here lol
What made Judge hilarious was that he got pitched around hard the instant he hit 60 which in turn affected his ability to stay in rhythm. ESPN was constantly interrupting college football to show you an at bat that wouldn’t even end with a ball in play
Third Leg Gregg!
[deleted]
He did have a mortal 3.76 era for 38 innings last season until he was traded.
Niebla adjusted his biomechanics. Made his slider his main pitch as well.
The only thing that really stops these guys now a days is tommy john
It’s not that he won’t have it but more like he may not have the kind of control of that 103mph like he has so far during this “hot streak”… and it’s not like relievers are known volatile commodities lol.
Scott Tanner was lights for SD, then not so much for LA as recent and one of many example of the volatility of relievers.
But He could also go years like this and replace Hoffman as SD’s all time best closer or something, or he could have hiccups the likes of many, many other elite closers. Burn brightest but short peaks idk. Closers the likes of Hoffman and Mariano with their kind of longevity are exceptions lol.
I didn’t see the original comment, but he literally doesn’t have control of the fastball right now. I think he’s thrown one fastball in the zone in his last two outings. If all the batters he faced in those two outings just didn’t swing their bat, I’m pretty sure Mason would’ve gotten pulled at some point due to walks and potentially given up a run
Why is Zach Britton not on this list?
While he did have a streak of 41.1 innings without an earned run in 2016, he gave up 3 unearned runs in one game about halfway through that stretch.
Ahhhhhh gotcha
well that seems like an unfair caveat
Real ones remember Bob’s no hitter in 1969
Bro is locked in, he’s gonna get there. Mason has some of the craziest stuff ive ever seen, just unfair to hitters.
Astros have had it so good with their bullpen from like 19-23
Jesus, what would our record be with a healthy Hader or Pressly in his prime?
Probably about the same, your starters have have a combined 6.21 ERA right now
Whats your name?… G-regg
Bob Møøse once bit my sister.
Thought for sure Zack Britton was the record holder but i now realuze this is for any runs. He went 41 1⁄3 without an earned run but had a few unearned along that streak
Former A’s player 😭😭😭
Gregg Olson had the greatest curveball ever.
Kind of wild Eric Gagne isn’t on this list.
Wasn’t Hershiser’s like 59 innings?
I’m surprised Britton isn’t here.
does this count his WBC outings?
What’s the record for non-relievers?
It’s hershiser right? 59 innings.
mason miller is not human 😭 someone check this man’s arm
