The Marcus smart DPOY has to be one of the worst awards of the 2000s.

That one was so egregious.

Jazz had a top 10 defense that year with Gobert and like one other decent defender in Royce O’Neale. The other three starters were basically traffic cones (Mitchell, Conley, Bojan). Without Gobert that is possibly the worst defensive unit in the league.

Meanwhile Smart was good, but that entire Celtics rotation was pretty good on defense iirc.

I think Rudy had already won 2 of his dpoy by then so he already had voter fatigue and there wasn’t really any narratives that year for dpoy then towards the end of the season Smart started doing a bunch of interviews whining about “guards can have just as big an impact on defense as big men” like no dude they cannot

You left out the part where the Jazz started that season out with a 19-28 record while Gobert was out, and only lost a total of 6 more games once he was healthy.

In 2018, Gobert’s defensive on/off was -8.8.

AD’s defensive on/off was -7.5

AD played a lot more minutes, which obviously has a ton of value. But it’s pretty much impossible to win DPOY with a league average defense.

… AD finished third in DPOY voting that season. Gobert’s main competition that year was probably Embiid, and Embiid would’ve won it if he hadn’t gotten injured late in the season (which reduced what his minutes played lead would’ve been).

And that season was the clearest example of a defense first guy having a massive impact on a team that I can think of. We were solidly in the lottery spots because Gobert missed time, but still made it to the 5th seed in a brutal West because of an insane run when he returned.

This is what frustrates me about the 2021 NBA draft the Jazz traded down to pick Jared Butler when Herb Jones was still there at 30, it should’ve been the obvious pick

Tim Duncan is an odd case to me because I never understood why he didn’t at least get one. Though the years he was the closest(2001 when Mutombo won it and 2007 when Camby won it) were kinda valid.
