I posted this in another comment, but 95 was literally nuts - Ewing finished 4th in MVP voting and didn’t make ANY All NBA team because he essentially had a mildly worse season than DRob (MVP), Shaq (scoring leader), and Hakeem lol

Also shout out to 1990 Ewing - I still hold to him being the best overall Center of the era. Its a shame his knees started going; besides all the 1st Team All NBAs, modern medicine also probably would’ve had his knees back. OKC definitely has haters, but that happens when you get really good and might be for the foreseeable future. Nobody hated the Warriors in 2015, but 16 that started to change, and when they god KD they were one of the most hated teams of all time. Now nobody really hates the Warriors, and I was even rooting for Steph in 22. OKC current hate is more on par with the ¹⁷⁄₁₈ Rockets hate with obvious parallels to Harden.

The Lakers/Celtics have REAL haters. Like, the real kind that will dedicate their life to twitter pages posting everything bad that happens with the team. Even if the teams are down for a decade the hate will not stop just cause of their history of dominance.

But that’s a fun part of the game. Nobody wants to be like the Wizards, where 29 other franchise fans legit just feel bad for them.

Also, that part of the CBA was agreed on years ago. It just couldn’t be implemented before the previous agreement running out because it affects player salaries. If anything, Embiid missing All-NBA 1st had more to do with it than Jokic. Jokic’s selection to the 2nd team was after the positionless All-NBA teams had already been agreed to.

Which seasons? 19, 22, 23 (the only times he played more than 51 games while averaging over 25 ppg)?

18-19: He’s clearly behind Jokic and Giannis. George and Harden were 2nd and 3rd in MVP. Do you really have him above Curry? Didn’t think so.

21-22: Again, he is clearly behind Giannis and Jokic. The other 3 were Luka, Booker and Tatum. Maybe over Booker?

22-23: The infamous MVP* season, and the only time he made 1st team. While anybody who uses bleach for cleaning rather than drinking knows that Jokic had a better season and should have won it, the rules change would still leave us with Jokic, Giannis, Luka and Embiid, moving either Shai or Tatum to the 2nd team.

So one, maybe 2. Btw, if we are going to retroactively apply rules, with the 65 game rule, Embiid has 2 seasons where he’s (barely) eligible for All-NBA at all.

All of McAdoo, Walton, and Rose had super short peaks due to injury. It’s near 100% that all 3 would have made at least another 1st team with a healthier career. Also for Walton and McAdoo, Center in the 70’s was absolutely stacked - those two had to contend with Kareem, Cowens, Gilmore, and (later) Moses for 1st team.

Embiid’s entire career has been an injury, but he played well enough to make more 1st teams, just stuck behind Jokic and AD.

For McAdoo, I’m not sure he would have made another First Team. He did get injured but a huge reason why his numbers were so good in the 70s was because around half of the top 20 players in the world were in the ABA. Once they all came over, his numbers dropped, regardless of his injuries or not since he wasn’t injured initially when the merger happened. Also like you said, he had to compete with Kareem anyways but now also Artis Gilmore and Moses Malone, both who started in the ABA, so I don’t think he makes another First Team regardless.

Aldridge has sneakily been on fire for two-plus months, and I tried to find a spot for him; the last forward slot came down to Aldridge, George, Kevin Love and Dirk Nowitzki, who settled down into his normal level of play after a transcendent first third of the season.

The center position has a strong historic legacy, and despite paranoia about its disappearance, there are a ton of good centers – including many young guys – in the league today. But the positional categories for All-NBA don’t jibe with the game’s evolution.

By the time Mourning got his, Ewing was no longer an All NBA caliber player and when Kareem was on the All NBA teams Ewing wasn’t quite yet All NBA First Team caliber. It was almost all competition with Hakeem, the Admiral, and at the tail end of Ewing’s best years Shaq. Some of those early 90s All NBA 2nd/3rd teams were also just…ridiculous, with guys like Stockton, Pippen, and Barkley regularly not making an All NBA 1st.

Cause all the marquee center talents of that era broke down due to injury. Bynum’s knee was made out of paper mache. Oden had a leg that was too long. Dwight’s back gave out on him. Bogut’s broken arm zapped his hand-eye coordination. Noah’s ankle and foot injuries capped his career. Even the next era’s centers started late. Embiid missed multiple years to start his career.

On the other hand previous system made a whole lotta more sense. Teams are working with 2 guards, 2 forwards, 1 center even nowadays with positions becoming somehow a bit more interchangable. So make team with: best center, 2 best forwards, 2 best guards.

That might not be top 5 players if eg top 5 have 3 centers… but we got MVP voting for that.

I think that would be fine if MVP Voting was an award/ accolade in and of itself, but unfortunately it isn’t. We are only really starting to see it come up because of places like basketball reference that track it; but no one 20yrs ago was comparing All NBAs against top MVP voting seasons.

Anyway, I also think it makes more sense than ever to reward the ‘best players’ these days, because so much has become positionless - especially amongst 2/3/4 positions.

Magic Johnson held one of the guard spots on 1st team all-NBA from 1982-1983 until 1990-1991. He didn’t play in 1991-1992.

Michael Jordan held the other guard spot from 1986-1987 through 1992-1993.

Isiah Thomas had it from 1983-1984 through 1985-1986.

Three of the one and dones on this list are accounted for this way. Sidney Moncrief was alongside Magic Johnson in 1982-1983. He made 4 additional 2nd team appearances.

Clyde Drexler was alongside Jordan in 1991-1992. He made 2 2nd teams and 2 3rd team all-nba.

Mark Price was the last, alongside Jordan in 1992-1993. He made 3 3rd team all-nba.

Sprewell is the weirdest one. It was his only All-NBA selection. He provided good defense and averaged 21ppg, but played 42mpg to get that.

Obviously, if a certain guard in Chicago wasn’t retired, Sprewell wouldn’t have gotten that First Team spot.

I’m not going to claim that two people are the goats when that’s logically impossible you can only have one go. I’m also not going to talk about people I’ve never seen playing. So I will talk about the people who played in the 80s and beyond. These are great players but it’s clear that they never led to a championship. So while they might have had great playoff runs or had very exciting careers during the time that they played on that team, at the end of the day if you’re looking for Championship these guys weren’t able to take their teams there.

I don’t think a lot of people truly understand how hard it is to make First Team. You are essentially the best in your position in the most competitive league in the world. Outside of MVP, you can argue it’s the hardest honour to achieve, including winning a championship. An NBA player has way more probability winning a championship than getting First Team.

In one year of 500 NBA players, 1% make first team.

That’s the 1% of already a teeny tiny elite.

Want to make it clear as the tone of the title (which sounds a bit AI tbh) makes it seem like this is somehow a disappointment.
