Availability is the best ability
It’s only the third year of the 65-game rule for award eligibility, and I’m already tired of the complaining from analysts, fans and players. It’s been a hot topic all year, we just had Luka and Cade receive special dispensation for eligibility despite missing the threshold, and then today, Wemby (who is 22 years old) said “the hardest thing” about winning DPOY was hitting 65 games. Most of the commentary from fans and analysts seems to agree automatically that this threshold is unreasonable.
Maybe I’m an old man yelling at a cloud but I was always told availability is the best ability. Major injuries aside, why, especially if you’re earning a significant percentage of your team’s salary cap, is it unreasonable you be expected to play 65 games (80%)?
I think some of my confusion comes from the fact the Celtics players play lots of games. They regularly disprove this hivemind idea that 65 games is too many to expect from good players.
There are 5 current Celtics who have been with the team for 5 or more seasons. Here’s their year-by-year regular season games played, noting there were only 72 games during the COVID-shortened seasons (in bold). 80% of 72 games is 58.
That’s 35 combined seasons with the team (noting Derrick’s first listed season was partly with San Antonio). Only 5 of those 35 seasons did these players fail to play in 80% of games:
tl;dr: All these players and fans complaining about the 65 game rule are soft as hell.
