The thing that drives me crazy about him is that he is the only guy on the roster who doesn’t hustle HARD. He always plays drop coverage on defense, as if his only area of responsibility is immediately below the basket. He doesn’t attempt to read the opponent and decide if he should jump out on a shooter. He doesn’t even fucking raise his HANDS half the time. He just crouches 6 feet away and watches the opponent take a wide open shot. Now Garza is not the best perimeter defender, but he tries to evaluate when to hang back, when to jump out. He tries to keep ahead of his man. And he is always looking for hustle plays like offensive rebounds. That energy is infectious and is the exact reason the Celtics had a successful season. You can go down the bench and every single player has that spirit– Ron Harper Jr, Hugo Gonzalez, Amari Williams, even guys who’ve barely played like Tonje and Shulga. They look like they want their minutes to count. I liked Simons a lot– he won us several games when he was the only guy cooking on offense (and he seemed game to embrace the Celtics mentality and work on his defensive shortcomings)– but I do think we’re better off with Vucevic on the team than Simons for a playoff run. HOWEVER I sincerely believe Garza should be our #2 and Vucevic our #3.

I will admit I turned around on Simons while he was here. I was really curious how he’d look playing off Tatum. But the team has been more solid since he was traded and Scheierman started getting his minutes. Then you’ve got all the salary cap implications. And lastly, with the team this good, it would’ve been insane to go into the playoffs with only Queta and Garza. We’ve seen Queta in foul trouble already. What if we see Queta in foul trouble and Garza turns an ankle? Regardless of how you feel about the relative value of Vucevic and Simons, this team clearly needed a big more than it needed Simons.

I just can’t evaluate Vuc until I see him vs these bigger offensive rebounding beasts that we acquired him for. Like he’s doing fine against Bona and Drummond, but I care more about him against Robinson or Duren.

He’s been fine enough so far

To me Vuc has always been a meh player. He does some things well and he has some holes. Nothing to hate but just a replacement level guy.

On the face of it, I’d rather have Garza out there as a similarly limited player but with a ton of energy and a year of experience w our guys. Realistically game 1 showed us we need to go three deep on the center depth regardless so it’s kind of a moot point.

What I’d like is if we had someone more switchable instead of one of Vuc or Garza as I think that will be a challenge for us in subsequent rounds

A lot of hate just gets regurgitated. It happens all the time (i.e., plenty of people copy/paste their takes from sports talk radio).

Tons of people hated Joe his first couple of years. When DWhite first got here there was a lot of concern whether a first and a swap was worth it. Lots of people wanted JB traded when he was up for the supermax extension.

Not saying Vuc will be a major contributor or anything but Brad and Joe obviously know what they are doing and I believe they’ve earned the right for some patience with how they operate.

I’ll also say that Game 1 showed his value. Queta was in foul trouble the whole game. Garza is not going to be able to contribute 25-30+ minutes in a playoff game. He’s an energy guy. He only logged 25+ minutes 9 times this season.

Vuc will also be key in stretching the floor in certain matchups, especially when teams roll out double bigs.

I dont like Vooch because I dont think Vooch is a good playoff basketball player. It has nothing to do with Simons. Vooch has been a losing basketball player for the better part of 15 years. He puts up empty stats for bad teams with no direction. He makes everything clunky around him because of his downsides as a player. Sure, hes a great passer for a center and when you revolve the game around him offensively, hes an okay scorer but we are seeing that he just does not fit as a 3rd option type of guy. The fact he cant fit in like that just shows a hes a tank commander for middling teams as the only time hes “good” is when the game revolves around him and no team is winning anything when Vooch is the #1 option. Hes the center equivalent of a Bradley Beal but maybe even worse.

Every time I think I’ve got it covered, these corporate bastards play the shell game and switch games to another streaming service. They will NOT get my $11 for this one! Guess I have to dig the radio out of the closet. Suck it NBC!

I think there are a few things happening:

1. Brown and PP were given the green light to shoot middies for the first time with Joe

2. We don’t start a stretch big anymore. When KP would start he’d take 6-7 threes and when Al started he’d take 4-5. Queta takes 0

3. Tatum takes a lot and didn’t play most of the year

Our offense being better than last year is kind of insane though

A huge part of why this year’s team is less suseptable to that is Jaylen’s relentless effort at getting in the paint. Without him, we can still sometimes get too 3-happy. Even if we may think he can sometimes fall into bad habits like running into 3 defenders or being a “headless chicken”, he’s our primary source to collapsing defenses and getting others good looks.
