as long as it’s straight on frontal contact and you’re not moving sideways or backwards, your feet don’t have to be perfectly set
By the rules you’re even allowed to be moving sideways or backwards, the important aspect is whether the defender gets to the spot first. For example, an offensive player running into a defender moving backwards is a charge, provided the defender had previously established legal guarding position.
Even still, plays like this show how difficult determining the right call can be (Patty was robbed and I’m still mad).
This is why the block/charge is the dumbest call in the NBA. It’s impossible to correctly officiate with how fast the game moves, and if it goes to replay it’s a technicality. It’s dangerous too

Yeah having feet set isn’t actually part of the rule, you just have to establish position in front of the offensive player and the offensive player initiates contract to the torso. This is a really good example of a charge to teach players.
