As a Cavs fan, I’ve always disliked Garland. I was ecstatic when we got Harden.

It wasn’t about doubting Harden. It’s about the fact that he’s 36 and has a history of underperforming in later rounds of the playoffs and the guy we gave up is a 26 year old two time all-star.

I’m sincerely enjoying the James Harden experience, but that doesn’t mean I’m sold on it being a smart trade. We certainly increased our chances of winning this year and probably next year. But Garland has become underrated due to a bunch of injuries that were largely bad luck and poorly timed (Lingering effects from a broken jaw and turf toe were the issues in each of the last two playoffs.) My sense is that Clips fans have actually had a similar experience with Garland as we have with Harden where there’s a ton of them going “holy shit this guy is actually really fucking good.”

Look, the team before the trade probably wasn’t going to be good enough to win a championship and the Cavs were never able to make Mitchell and Garland work on D (Harden obviously still has issues on that end, but at least he’s both big and strong). But I’m pretty dubious that the trade has pushed us into being good enough to be a contender while it makes the team much worse in the long run. In three years Garland will be squarely in his prime while Harden will probably be out of the league.

Mitchell will take care of it. Finally Harden has a good teammate besides Chris Paul
