WEAR THE SHIRTS!!
Seeing the Spurs with their different colors in different sections was so cool.
The most coordinated I’ve ever seen. Part of it is because so few people have Spurs merch
Part of it is before the game as people were sitting the jumbotron just zoomed on people not wearing the shirts and stayed on them until they put them on
That’s genius
Nah it’s obnoxious
Obnoxious to pay to go to a playoff game, then not participate in a simple act that requires you to do ONE thing and then sit on your ass?
Yep. I paid to go to the game, I shouldn’t be ridiculed into wearing something I don’t want to.
We’re watching basketball dude. Put the shirt on.
I won’t be at the games because I can’t afford to go, and I would put the shirt on if I went. But I think the idea of it is silly and you shouldn’t be bullied into complying, especially if you’d rather wear your favorite player’s jersey that you spent a hundred(s) dollars on. Not sure why I’m getting downvoted, this isn’t an unpopular opinion in the rest of the thread.
I think this is it. I’d go so far as to say that wearing the giveaway shirts at the game should not be a thing for any team in any sport that has a history and legacy like the Celtics. There’s just too much personal connection for everyone there to wipe it away as a “Green out” or whatever they’ll call it.
At the end of yesterday’s game, Ron Harper Jr made some plays and the camera man found a dude wearing Harper’s jersey high-fiving a guy in front of him… they were all hyped. They may have been the only person in the Garden wearing a Harper jersey. It was fun to see that individual stand out, and it wouldn’t have happened if they covered their jersey with a green shirt that meant as much to them as it does to the guy sitting next to them.
Yeah, I think turning everyone into generic NPCs is kinda silly. Let people wear what they want, fandom isn’t wearing a matching shirt.
If Joe Mazzulla doesn’t think he deserves COTY because it’s about what the players do on the court, I’d love to hear what he thinks about this topic.
“I don’t care” + “I like that they say Celtics”
That’s fine. Let people wear what they want was my main sentiment.
Oh no I was just meming lol — I agree with you. If I’m paying $100+ for a jersey (and I have multiple times) I’m wearing that jersey lol. ESPECIALLY if it’s the same color as the free shirt. Tbh Boston is such a loyal fanbase if the Celtics media sent out a blast to ticket holders saying “wear green” (opposed to an alternate/away) I’m sure 75% are doing it
Thank you! The downvotes are sending me, especially when most people agree
It’s so weird - these things (like wearing matching colors) really just seem like easily shared instagram or TikTok nonsense that could be visually appealing for a brief moment but don’t do anything for the actual enjoyment of the game for the fans or help the players. I truly hope the majority of actual fans don’t want instagram and “shareability” to drive what fans wear or do at a game… so who’s actually going onto the Cs sub to downvote you for not jumping on the Instagram bandwagon bullshit?
Boston don’t have the colors for it sorry green wall is ok I guess but will never hit like what SA did
No need to apologize - it’s just that Boston would never want to “hit like” SA. Boston has no need to do cheesy stuff when they have loud fans and all those banners hanging all over the arena - that’s all the intimidation and home court advantage they’d ever need.
Tbh, SA would love to “hit like” Boston… but there is just no way they ever could.
U sound pressed relax
So few people?? I lived in San Antonio for a couple years, you can barely take 5 steps outside without running into someone wearing Spurs merch. But, as someone else pointed out, part of it was because the Jumbotron operator bullied people into putting the shirts on lol.
Yeah idk wtf that comment is about. Spurs merch is almost the most common apparel people wear down there.
“So many crazy hispanic fans, idk how they afford it” type energy
That one guy wearing orange in the pink section lol
I think in the spurs game it makes sense for what they were trying to do. The spurs have an amazing fan base so it’s not a question of drumming up support or compensating for anything. It’s just that most people were going to come in black and white spurs merch not the special color thing they were doing.
Celtics don’t really have any alt colors so any t shirt thing would probably just be more green and white, similar to how it is anyway. Celtics don’t need something like that, the stands are always a sea of green in the playoffs no matter what. The only reason to do something like that is if we wanted a “blackout” night or something but I jus don’t really see it
I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone in Boston who was NOT wearing Celtics Patriots or Red Sox merch
It was cool seeing Duncan and Robinson being apart of it
It would’ve been cool if they had just stuck with black or white instead of a damn rainbow
It was rotating 3 colors from their fiesta city edition jerseys
Theyre doing all black next game.
Colors are for Fiesta which just started down there
Yeah it woulda been sick if they handed out shirts of exactly one colour 🙄
Unfortunately the fans willing to participate in these tribalistic traditions have long been priced out of Celtics playoff games
This is not true lol we’ve never really gotten down with the same shirt thing, places like Boston and New York don’t need those gimmicky things anyways in my opinion
This is 100% true.
Agreed. This is small/mid market behavior IMO.
I consider myself a hardcore Celtics fans and I have like a dozen of these shirts. Have never put one on at the game. Most people don’t. It’s just a nice souvenir and the Garden is fucking rocking regardless
Oklahoma’s blue made it look like it was AI. It’s horrible. I was at G1 and fair to say 99.9% fans at the Garden were wearing Celtics Merch already.
If 200-300 dollars is “priced out” then get a better job or learn to save, you can get second round loge tickets for 500-600 too. Its not bad
Tf? I watch every game but I do not have the money to just drop a couple hundred on a ticket. Sorry that the job market sucks and that I have save money for bills
Nobody should be hand waving away these prices. Shit has truly gotten out of control. I love going to games, especially playoff games, but $200 for balcony tickets is not worth it.
I don’t think the prices exclude “real fans” but the ticket prices are fucking bullshit with the proliferation of 3rd party resale outlets. I got 2019 first round tix in the 5th row balcony against the Pacers for \(40/ea. Sunday Game at 1pm. Get in price on the secondary market was about \)180 for yesterday’s game. That is a heinous difference.
Say it louder. It’s corny as hell.
How is it corny in any capacity? It shows off a playoff atmosphere and gets every fan involved, you guys are so lame
Wearing a t-shirt is not getting involved
Maybe not to you. But to the thousands of corporate bores who populate these games, it’s the most we’re going to get. And for kids, it’s a fun way to be a part of the fans
There’s people like this everywhere and they suck. Everyone else is trying to do something fun just for fun sake. Then some overthinking stick in the mud shows and just decides to go against the grain. These people evolve into Karens and fast lane campers.
100% fans come with their own jerseys, this isn’t OKC where a bunch of farmers show up wearing flannels
ahhhh, as a season ticket member… these shirts are out here every year. The gimmicks have been available, at least.
I dont know I’m against shirts ever since game 6 in 2012. The shirts were not nice to LeBron and he took that personally.
Was there yesterday, why would l wear an XXXL amica branded Cs shirt over my Jaylen jersey?
This…this exactly. I get they can’t do sizing efficiently at this scale but there are easier ways…I strongly prefer towels…something that won’t throw away instantly
Cs fans are awesome already. We don’t need to make the TD look like the spurs game last night, we’re loud as fuck and we make our own entertainment such as by yelling we want Boston yesterday
I’m always pissed off because the broadcasts don’t do justice to the crowd. Making it loud adds production value
Still have two towels from Cleveland game 5 2024 and still use them for drying my skis off before putting them into my car.
Can you share what you’re basing that on? I also don’t have numbers to support my comment, but I assume it’s more because they’re extremely lame and unnecessary for a fanbase like the Celtics
I absolutely love that the garden crowd doesn’t wear the shirts
They’re gonna create their own atmosphere, not be a corporate-mandated cheer squad
One of the things that makes the garden special is how electric the atmosphere is organically. Visiting players talk about it all the time.
I have a “McHale /Bird 86” shirt and the usher who looked like he had been there since before 1986 asked me where he could get one.
Wearing the shirts doesn’t do anything to take away from that. It just makes watching the game on tv better, and shows off the teams colors. You guys are reading too much into it
It does though because it turns it into something that’s now corny and manufactured for the tv. I always cringe when Miami do their all white t shirts. The garden going wild with all its character is way better
It 100% does - I went to the game right before the Super Bowl. Myself, and roughly 10-15% of the crowd was in Pats gear. No one told us to do that, we did it because we are crazy motherfers who love Boston sports. We don’t need no damn shirts and we don’t need the crowd to look the same for TV. That’s for fan bases that need to be told what to do
Yeah the shirts are corny and for family like, fair weather fans
Thank you!
Fully agreed. The shirts are for fanbases that don’t wear jerseys to games.
Afuckinmen
If I pay a bajillion dollars for playoff tickets I’m wearing my favorite Shaq Celtics jersey and cheering my dick off
I really don’t feel like being part of some company’s marketing department on my own dime
The OKC crowds from this past Finals looked so… sterile?
Maybe it was the dubious decision to go with white t-shirts? (IIRC)
Those different colored sections from the Spurs/Blazers game was admittedly pretty cool.
Completely disagree. Hearing O K C from the all blue wave felt like a cult in a good way. It felt super intimidating
There’s absolutely nothing intimidating about Oklahoma City lol
Tell that to Black Wall Street…
lol you were super intimidated through a tv screen?
I get into this shit
Damn I feel sorry for you bro because getting really into the game and being intimidated by choreographed tv crowds are not the same
Do u even enjoy sports. That’s the exact same reductive argument ihatesportsball people use. “So you like watching other men put a ball into a hoop while you sit on your couch?” Well yes I do.
I’m not like actually scared I just think its cool and powerful in its own right.
Yeah I’ve played multiple sports my whole life and still box now. I go to multiple celtics and sox games a year and try to get to foxboro once a year if I can.
What about you? Or do you just watch through the TV because if you go to games you’d know that it would never go down well with the crowd if people tried forcing everyone to wear matching t shirts
Goddamn right. I wish more people understood this
Yeah the northeast doesn’t do that shit
I was at an MLS game once where there were oversized cotton t-shirts in the teams color at every seat. It was fucking 90 degrees out! No way was I putting that on.
Exactly- many folks have their own jersey- OP kick rocks.
Yeah it seems pretty forced and fake to me. You don’t need coordinated shirts if everyone is rocking the place. I mean if the team really wants it sure I guess…
I agree with you, but I wear the shirt. I am not mad at anyone doing their own thing.
I didn’t pay 160 for a jersey just to cover it with a 5 dollar shirt
You’re still wearing the jersey and no one cares you paid \(160 for it or \)20 for a knock off 😂😂 pretty sure people go there to watch the game not check out other people’s outfits😂
I care
luke skywalker voice
When I go to Bruins games in San Jose I get tons of compliments on my Bergeron sweater from Sharks fans…so some ppl are looking around..(yes i know its not Cs in Boston)
For the people that care on your level, check the green/white out advertising and wear that jersey. Unless you can only afford one $160 jersey you pleb
Honestly Its very rare where it is actually a shirt I would want to wear. Often times is “INSURANCE COMPANY” in 50 pt font, some lazy cliche slogan in 40 pt font… and “Celtics” in 10 point font. Make the shirt something that people want to wear and they will wear it.
Quite literally what it was game 1. Rooting for Amica insurance rather than the Cs
Yep. And they were white when I went a few years ago. I wanna wear Boston green
I’m sorry no. We just show up and cheer our asses off. We don’t need a t shirt. We already have tons of Celtics gear.
Ya I love decking out in my gear plus the XXXXL Tshirt is absolutely gigantic on my 5’2” ass smh.
Not to mention I love how fandom isn’t defined by attire. I used to go the games straight from work during the IT era in pencil skirts and blouses but you bet your ass I’m yelling even if I’m next to a baby. This is so special in Boston the fans will always bring it no matter what.
The fact that most c’s fans don’t wear them is what makes the garden great - we’re not OKC, we’re not Miami. We’ve got t shirts older than the Thunder and our kids get jerseys for Xmas . I’m not usually “get off my lawn” but this is one where the curmudgeons have it 100% correct.
wut
[deleted]
You might find this hard to believe but, we dont need matching t shirts to cheer for the same team
You’re awfully emotional over a t shirt
Okay grandpa it still looks cool
I’m old and I cringe so hard when I see fans all wearing the same shirt. I will admit that the spurs game last night was kind of cool looking, but all the white Christian nationalist at an okc game just looks like a legit cult.
This series was so annoying bro
southern baptist ass fanbases that will all put on the same formaldahide soaked rag so they all look like some collective zombie crowd are the dumbest shit in sports.
This trend is pretty old by now. Personally I don’t wanna wear an extra shirt that is made from cheap starchy fabric and probably doesn’t fit well while I’m yelling and jumping around a buncha other people and sweating.
Lots of people wanna wear the Celtics jersey or shirt they got and rep it.
I’ll take the souvenir though lol.
People in Boston don’t like to be told what to do. Don’t know if you’ve noticed.
I think Boston doesn’t need that shit especially with white shirts. If greeen maybe it works and looks good.
Yeah like you could potentially do different shades of green across the arena, wouldn’t be mad at that.
No
Fuck the shirts. Just win.
So lame, we are a classic franchise above such romper room gimmicks.
I love watching a C’s game and seeing a random yellow shirt and being like “Bruins, yup” or and Edelman jersey or something. Don’t need to finesse a sports culture in Boston, we got it.
Plus my niece would love this shirt, don’t wanna spill beer on it, gotta stuff it in my ass pocket and sit on it all game
They give out one size and its huge.
Bring back cus crise!
It’s a gimmick for shitty markets. Celtics fans don’t need to put on cheap tshirts to be loud and imposing.
San Antonio is a shitty market?
I *hate* the shirts. It’s the picture of wastefulness to produce thousands of tshirts almost no one wants and almost no one will keep. And just think about all the shirts that get produced for games that never take place. I love that the Celtics have eschewed a lot of the typical cheesy shit like this. I miss the days we didn’t have cheerleaders even
That gimmicky shit doesnt work in Boston, fans come with their own jerseys, this isn’t OKC where a bunch of farmers show up wearing flannels
This is becoming one of my least favorite NBA things going. This is the 18-time NBA champion Boston Celtics. We don’t need gimmicks or color coordinated shirts to have a playoff atmosphere, which these teams are pushing for the visuals so they can post about it on social media. We act like we’ve been there before because we have. Fan bases like San Antonio and OKC are our small market little brothers. Stop trying to push an old school basketball city to do this.
They dont need to do anything extra for a Boston crowd, the shirts are unnecessary
Its more important that the crowd impacts the game. Shirts are for amateur fans who need to look busy.
Went for the 24’ playoffs and guy sitting next to our seats took 4 shirts on top of the two he already had and just acted like nothing happened when we first walked in
Honestly I love that we don’t wear the shirts and have our own mix of organic green and white. We don’t need coordinated shit to be good fans.
We don’t need gimmicks, that’s for pink hats/expansion Teams that get knocked out in the first round. The garden was loud and jumping, that’s all that matters… if anything, they should just do the “different here” black towels again. Plus, they broke the bank with Brown and Tatum’s contracts, they need to save their pennies to somehow pay Pritchard.
No t-shirt, I wear my well curated Celtics gear to a game in my own style. I am not wearing a business sponsored t-shirt to look like everyone else. That is not a Boston thing.
I spent the entire OKC game making fun of the fans for this very thing.
They don’t need to have color coordinated shirts to put fear in the opponents. Players talk about how hard it is to play at TD Garden regularly lol
I have my lucky Jaylen jersey and they want me to wear a white stiff ass amica shirt?
What? No.
I own a shitload of Celtics gear that was not cheap and actually fits. If I’m throwing down for playoffs (or any game), I’m wearing any of that over a shirt that’s 2 sizes too large and has a giant Arbella or Vista Print logo.
Celtics had white shirts yesterday. But I had my sweet D White jersey. So…. I did not wear the shirt.
But we also won by 30.
The fact this post has over 560 upvotes is so disappointing
Good luck with that
Just because people are not wearing them does not mean they are not taking them with them as souvenirs.
I have a drawer full of shirts. Always keep them, rarely wear them. Oddly enough, the only time I can vividly recall putting the shirt on was at the game OP posted
I’m pretty sure the playoff game I went to last year didn’t even have shirts, I was surprised
Still have my shirt from that series
I prefer the footage from the 80s/90s with the smattering of neon hats, the random shirtless guys, and the plumes of cigarette smoke
And all the shitty draft Beer in those paper cups!
The shirts they give are ass
Celtics fans don’t really need to do gimmicks like OKC or a Heat whiteout (tho the Spurs put the effort into a visual experience). Celtics fans spend a lot of money on merch, many don’t want to cover it up.
That being said, a white T in TD Garden is lame, IMO. Needs to be green, as OPs example shows.
When the Celtics had low expectations, more effort was put into the giveaways. The shirt last night was low effort design work.
Seen this during the OKC game yesterday and 90%+ people were wearing the blue thunder t-shirts. Was weird af, like drones in every seat. When the camera panned round it was like a PS1 sports videogame crowd.
Unpopular opinion but It’s super played out and I don’t really like it for the Celtics especially
Going tomorrow and I will most definitely not be wearing that garbage. That’s for teams who can’t generate their own hype.
matching shirts is loser market shit we dont need it
couldn’t care less*
could care less means you can care less
You are correct thank you. Wasn’t fully awake when I commented. Thanks again.
I used to agree with this as a way to sort of separate Boston as a more diehard fanbase, but as I get older I just want people to come out, have fun and be a part of something silly that unifies us a little. Doesn’t make anybody more or less of a fan to wear a green t-shirt for a little bit. Someday we’ll all get on the same page and The Garden will be a sea of Kelly Green. Gonna look so nice.
I get what you mean but as Celtics fans we tend to buy our jerseys, I personally have a JB and JT jersey. Might get a KG jersey one day.
Cus Crise?
Ah the king of the 4th . I wish he got signed and won a ring with the team. 😭
i might have been at that game!
had my shirt on for sure
Really liked why San Antonio did last night with their 3 colors
Every time I go it’s white shirts they give out which I don’t like as much. I’m rocking my jersey and doing my thing, but an XL shirt that’s way too big for me with a less cool color just isn’t what I want to wear to a game that cost me half a weeks pay to go to
Maybe if it wasn’t a lazy white tee shirt with the unbelievably creative “Let’s Go” slogan. Can’t forget the Amica logo being as big as the Celtics name
If they dropped a banger shirt in green with a cool design, I’d definitely wear it, but most of the times it’s just a half ass generic black shirt with Amica and “Different Here”
Spurs went all out with the colors, and fans bought in. If TD went all in I’m sure fans would reciprocate too.
They don’t wear it because a lot sell it online
The lack of ads is so beautiful. Obligatory Fuck Adam Silver.
In 2008, I just remember a lot of fans being too vain to wear the shits. The most annoying was when they would wear gear from a different local team and the colors were similar to the opponent’s colors.
Some fans are just too cool for this.
Sure I spent good money on my jersey that fits just so I can cover it up with a shit tshirt that doesn’t. I gather up the shirts no one takes and I give em to the homeless outside the garden.
I think my entire family of four can fit into one of those shirts
Can’t believe this was a decade ago
Nah I love when the Garden is just a mashup of different jerseys. Looks more authentic.
at 617 upvotes it stands
I’ve tried pointing this out and gotten, “that’s college, we don’t need that in Boston”, it’s so lame, just wear the damn shirt
It’s a combo of two things: the fans more likely to wear the shirts have been priced out long ago. Also these T shirts are always corny with a tacky sponsorship label plastered all over it.You’re a multibillion dollar organization, make an actual cool T shirt that people want to wear without the corporate sponsored garbage. Also people need to be less self centered and wear the shirts and buy into something bigger than themselves. Getting harder and harder for people to do that with social media
