Victor Wembanyama on if he feels the weight of Tim Duncan and David Robinson as Spurs franchise legends: “I wouldn’t say, weight, no, I would say, I feel safe. It feels like if you trip, you know there’s a lot of hands that are ready to catch you.”
This guy’s life is like an anime MC
“From day one it has felt like that” damn that is powerful! Many people don’t even feel like that within their own families, this guy has it at work. Good job, Spurs!
I’d kill for that feeling at work instead of constant finger pointing and negative feedback regardless of improvements.
Companies aren’t interested in creating this sort of culture, for normal employees. NBA players are very valuable workers, so it’s different for them.
But theoretically this would strengthen every type of organisation, if the goal is human flourishing, this should be the culture in every workplace, but worker’s value has been diminished by neoliberalism and stock market logic since it was introduced in the 1980’s. Now it’s what you own that is rewarded, not how you work.
& for a player like Wemby, there’re 31 other places to go if the Spurs don’t give him that culture
Chet is the main villain.
More like a side villain that makes occasional cameos
the comic relief villain who gets huge power ups off screen only to get oneshot by the protagonist every time they meet
Chet is the Buggy D Clown of Wemby’s Luffy.
chet is carried by okc the same way buggy is by law and mihawk
One piece talk in the nba sub I love it here
Buggy: “Will you please listen? I’m not the Messiah”
All Impel Down prisoners: “He is the Messiah!”
Conquerors by Straw Hat is odee shooting hang pulls
*crocodile
Wait buggy has the D? I didn’t know that!
Wait until you find who his daddy was…
No, it hasn’t been said that he does, just a running gag at this point but with Oda you never know
Sorry, I never got into the anime but watched a little of the live action. What does the D in all their names mean?
Hasn’t been revealed yet but there is theories. It seems like end game information we will learn when Luffy finds the One Piece. The lore and world building gets very deep so there is a lot we still don’t know.
Yeah like how tf is gonna wrap all this up? There’s so much lol.
Team rocket mentioned
Patrick Corlasour
Team rocket
Okc is team rocket
Vegeta ass
Chet is the young early rival for the MC but is petering off as MC now faces true villains and opposition to become the GOAT of his sport.
Krillen to his Goku
In most anime the young early rival becomes the final boss though
Well this early rival did join one of the final boss teams for this modern era.
In all honesty I can’t see Chet turning into a final boss in the near future.
The problem with Chet is that he’s like 0.8 Wemby. They do a lot of the same things and are built similarly. However, Wemby is taller, longer, and slightly better at most things (we can debate how much of that is because he’s 5” taller or because he’s more skilled, but it’s really irrelevant). I feel like his final boss has to be someone who’s different. Or maybe there is no final boss.
Pretty much yeah I couldn’t name anything Chet does better than Wemby
Maybe his midrange bag is a little better? Wemby tends to fadeaway most of the time
“Smell you later” *picks up different team jersey and leaves*
I thought he was the first arc rival that the MC surpasses but then he randomly shows up in a later arc to test his growth.
Felt like it was some “Power of Friendship” type beat.
He got the power of friendship plus his own theme song. Main villain never had a chance
I dont know what this means
Definitely the new face of the league
Sometimes, it feels like theres that right formula for a winning player. Seems like Wemby def hits all the marks, physically and mentally.
I’m tired him making me love him damnit! Dude is just so awesome.
Ok lets marry then!
Him and AnT would legit be like Shaq and Kobe type of ruthlessness.
Kobe type of ruthlessness
Let’s hope not
Only way in hell I’ll accept ant leaving is if we are promised players / picks that get us a chip. Otherwise no sir do not trade him
Call me crazy, but I’d rather lose with my guy if he wants to be loyal than to win with exports. I’d rather have a lifetime Stockton than a 1 year Kawhi Chip. Thats why it kills to me this day my Kings got rid of Hali.
Who even says they want to be a Kings player on draft day 😢😢😢 balls out and then gets dumped just cuz Fox was a sell low even though Hali was clearly better.
Im not saying it out of spite but. It doesnt take much for a beloved star to quickly become a villian. Take shai for example, for someone who is soft spoken, no drama, family man, he still becomes the butt of all the jokes. Lebron is another prime example…
But shai’s playstyle is depressing (midrange harden). Wemby’s playstyle is just jawdropping just like watching shaq do stupid shit but still makes it work.
Nobody’s saying Shai isn’t great, he just has a foul-baity playstile and the worst fans in the league.
The league did it to Shai by giving him an incredibly soft whistle.
It’s mostly because of his play style.
Drive the paint, get the foul. Drive the paint, get the foul. Shoot a three. Drive the paint, get the foul
He is the new silhouette of the league. Casting a very long shadow.
a slender, man like shadow
Yep.
Giannis wanted it, but his personal and team peak was too close to the end of LeBron/Steph’s era of dominance.
Jokic doesn’t seem to care.
Tatum/SGA/Luka just have something missing to their games or personality.
Wemby is the full package.
Idk what’s really missing with Luka. He came to the league guns blazing just like Wemby. Very few players come out as polished offensively in basketball as teen Luka did.
The on-court personality was there too, but it seems like somewhere along the way he just didn’t rise to match the exponential trajectory he set up by his second year, which is outlandish to say considering that he averages 29/8/8 for his career and is a 5x all nba 1st team in his 1st 7 years lol.
I think Luka’s just not breaking the game the way Joker/Wemby/Steph/Bron/Shaq/MJ/Wilt/Russell did. He’s an elite playmaker and scorer, but he’s just on the tier below, which, again, is crazy to say.
His main personality trait is “whiny”. That’s the perception, at least.
This is exactly it. He complains toooooo much.
And it’s petulant as hell. So annoying to watch, plus a lot of people don’t like heliocentric basketball.
Like what happened to Harden, bad PR from: bad defense, complaining to the refs and “fat” (not that motivated).
From what I understand, he destroyed his legs playing hurt for the Nets in the postseason to try to will himself to a title. If not his prime-prime would of lasted a bit longer.
I hated Harden during our rivalry but I’ve changed my mind. I like Harden now.
He’s more tolerable without the foul-baiting lol. Seems more for the love of game now than anything
True but he was also letting himself go when he was a Rocket, why he got traded to Brooklyn in the first place
It’s mostly injuries and a historically idiotic trade that threw away a nice team built around his strengths that just made the finals.
as a casual, ya’ll say ‘full package’. I say being literally a foot taller than everyone else
seeing this guy block shots without jumping is just so crazy, or move half the court in 2 strides. hes just THAT much better than all the other players around him. and then hits a 3. and then ANOTHER crowd pop from an alley oop
jumping on the mic and being super humble and good with the crowd is nice and sure it contributes but he just looks that ridiculous out there that anyone can connect and wanna tune into a spurs game when hes on. imo
I think SGA is fine. He may come off a bit brash in some interviews or the way he carries himself but he kinda reminds me of Kobe in that sense. I’d say SGA is like the Kobe of this generation and Wemby is like Timmy.
For what it’s worth I think Wemby is more like Kobe and SGA more like Timmy lol
“Brash”? SGA comes off as flat to me. Just speaking of off court stuff.
What about my main man Ja?
He should join our local new expansion team the Baltimore Bullets when they come back in 2030
Once lebron retires the crown falls to Wemby.
10000%
Can’t believe it took yall so long to realise lmfao
Dont leave Spurs wemby youre in good hands with them.
I hope pop gets healthy and help their front office.
Realistically Pop is not going to get healthier than he is today. Don’t expect any major rehabilitation with a stroke after the first year, certainly not at his age. On the plus side, he seems to have retained his speech and mental faculties and is already involved with the FO and the team. I am sure nobody is putting any pressure on him to take up more responsibilities, as it should be.
He’s gone from walking with an aid and occasionally supported to walking unassisted (albeit with his helper right beside him carrying his cane.). And that was a recent development.
Pop does have the advantage of daily workouts with some of the best physical therapists in the world, and he’s very financially well off, so all his other care is tremendous.
Idk he’s gonna have any breakthroughs and come back to coaching or anything, but he is still improving
He’s El Jefe now :)!
The bulk of rehabilitation that occurs/is possible for a stroke occurs in the first year
I’d argue swallowing is more important, but otherwise this is all correct.
He will be in even better hands on the Sixers (Josh Harris never went to the island, trust me bro)!
Sixers are willing to give up Paul George AND 3 point specialist Andre Drummond for Wemby
seeing TimeLord and Drummond hitting corner threes is freezing my brain.
No way TimeLord has been on that bullshit too 😭
life w the statue of liberty in the paint
9⁄23 on the season and 1⁄3 last night
Completely caught me off guard as someone who doesn’t typically stay up to watch Blazers’ games.
isnt he the GM?
Brian Wright is the GM. Pops title is El Jefe
Brian Wright is still the GM, when Pop retired from the headcoach position he became Team President (which is above GM).
He obviously needed more time for himself after having a stroke, especially at his age, so team president was the perfect role for him. He can stay involved in the team while not being required to work nearly as much as he did all those years, since he only needs to make macro decisions. Think of it as how a CEO doesn’t need to work as much as a COO.
I hope Spurs fans remind themselves daily just how lucky they are. Very jealous.
We say “thanks Tim Duncan” every day with a piece of cheese cake.
This is literally how Manu ends any stat/league related posts that praises him on social media “Thanks TD” 😆
Explaining the joke, but it’s a quote from Pop about how they always finish dinner by saying “Thanks Timmy” and he leaves him a piece of cheese cake on the road. I think it was a Zach Lowe piece?
From when he announced retirement if I’m remembering it correctly
I will never take for granted just how lucky we have been to have guys like pop the admiral Timmy or Wemby. Just absolute Gs who put in the work.
Imagine just getting that lucky that your pick lands you someone like this. Sigh.
I pray over my morning breakfast tacos to my tia and the Sombrero God in thanks.
Sarcasm aside, yeah, we are absurdly lucky.
Imagine if he went to the Wizards 😬
The most underrated spoiled sports franchise there is.
They’re like the patriots of the nba
This comment section is wild. To me he just sounds like a non-native English speaker who is incredibly intelligent.
Americans can’t fathom a smart young man because of their education system and their supposed role models being buttheads
Man, there’s plenty of smart people among American youth. Intelligence and education aren’t the same thing. But if you want to blame anything about American culture, blame late-stage capitalism, where everything is a show to make money. What people can’t fathom is a public figure being genuine.
Ok
Have you considered fathoming other things?
It’s not even noon and I’ve fathomed five things.
Dunning Krueger ^
He’s also like 21 and one of the best basketball players in the world. It’s a very rare combo for him to also be smart, good at speaking in his second language and also open and insightful. He’s so tall and good at basketball that he could have just checked out in everything else but he hasn’t. I think it’s very impressive.
Rare? He’s 1 of 1. He’s literally perfect in every single way except being French.
We all have our flaws
In my unbiased, correct opinion, it makes him perfecter
When your one weakness is a strength
He’s what now?
This comment section is nothing but praise for him and what he is saying, minus like one guy who got so downvoted their comment is hidden
Zenbanyama
wemby is just so mature at his age
Look at Wemby man, so inspirational
Yeah, this is nothing spectacular but it’s such a great answer
For real - so open and willing to be vulnerable, which is very rare and impressive at that age. Easy for Robinson, Duncan and Pop to support and mentor him because he’s so open to it.
It’s great to see and I hope he continues to be a role model in this way.
Gotta feel good having the franchise greats behind you.
Tatum would kill to have even 10% of Wemby’s character lol
Infinite Aura vs perpetual cornball
Which is which? Wemby says all this stuff and it’s just as corny. He really tries to come across as stoic and intelligent in a way that’s forced. Always trying to have quotable remarks.
But Wemby is original and organic, Tatum’s attempts feel heavily inspired (not a bad thing) and rehearsed (cringy, but again, not a bad thing)
you may have some processing issues if you cant tell the difference
And he’s fr*nch
How weird that you immediately think of Tatum in this completely unrelated clip
It’s a Lakers flair, it’s not weird at all
a remarkable absence of cringe is best highlighted by a shining example of cringe
It’s not a slander, but rather he is the best basketball player who comes to mind about someone who really wants to make hype quotes .
Fr
lebron would kill to have 10% of tatums crisp hairline
If Tatum said this exact quote, this sub would call it corny
I like Wemby, but the glazing do be crazy sometimes lmao.
100% - now that the Spurs and OKC are so annoying I’ve come to appreciate Tatum as the leader he is. He’s a great team mate, great father, a natural leader. Even with the corny Kobe stuff, he’s who everyone else should want to be and emulate. The Tatum slander here is wild.
Also while we’re on the topic of Celtics views v Wemby, Brown gets shit on a lot on Reddit for being pretentious. He if said this exact same quote people would be adding it to the pretentious list.
Brown, Tatum and Wemby are all cool guys who are good at basketball and are quite well spoken. If you’re mad at people calling shit corny, be the change you want to see. I like seeing Wemby speak in pressers. I also like hearing Brown speak, I can respect lots of players simultaneously.
bars 🔥🔥🔥
How is he so well spoken at this age/level of maturity. Like dude. Wow perfectly said Way to be the new face of the league
He has a really good media trainer
Must be the monk training
Shaolin PR firm
So does everyone else in the league
This mfer was always going to be a Spur wasn’t he
Blame Tony parker
It does feel weirdly destined. French, so he was a fan of Tony Parker and the Spurs. Then he is basically the next generations Tim Duncan, but maybe I’m only make the TD comparison because he is a spur
I once said that Shohei is like Harrison Bergeron, and I stand by that. But if there’s room in this world for two Harrison Bergerons, then this is the other one
Thank fuck I was born in central Texas and became a Spurs fan
Stupid Sexy Spurs
wemby is the rightful face of the nba for the next generation. cheering for spurs to take it all the way this year.
I always knew Tim would make a great trip sitter
such a smart, well spoken guy
This is his second language too. Shit i speak my second most fluent language like a 2nd grader
Jesus Christ. What a perfect answer.
Kid don’t know how to miss.
I really love that response. It makes it look like his status as the face of the next generation is less of a burden and more of a gift.
I love him goddamn
Imagine having these legends as a Support group 🙌
this is so sweet
The Wemby doc that comes out someday after he’s won like 7 ships and finished being president of France or whatever is gonna fucking slap
As a pistons fan we gave a strong franchise culture and identity, what Pop and his core players built in San Antonio is legitimately on another level. That man is a fucking genius that all coaches should aspire towards.
So this is aang in real life and his previous aavatars are watching him fulfill his destiny
This fucking guy how am I suppose to dislike him
Wemby is always so thoughtful, poised and well spoken. He says things that are wholesome and positive, it’s hard not to like this young man. Definitely a good role model and future face of the league.
Love the kid! I hope he wins multiple MVPs and nada titles
What a great answer
What a nice young man
Victor “The Enlightened One” Wembanyama
This dude is awesome
So inspirational
Those monks taught him well
YALL ARENT US
i hate that this guy will be wrecking my team for years to come but glad it had to be him
This fuckery can’t go on any longer!
Kawhi says otherwise 😂
I never doubted the Spurs or pop the whole time during the Kawhi drama. Every time our fanbase gets on to whale hunting I hope we don’t trade for him, there’s no way it would work here if he didn’t work there.
Read some books people
Unreal they have in SA
What a vulnerable and self-aware thing to say… For a guy who clearly has a mean streak/hypercompetitive side, Wemby sure is a philosopher
Look at Wemby man…
Like colossal
“I am all the Jedi.”
Damn this guy is the best, on and off the court.
I read this as tripping🍄
Good fucking answer
If any Spurs fans burns Wemby if he ever comes to face some kind of failure (because the dude somehow hasn’t yet) they’d have to be beyond dumb
This kid is, literally, the future of the league. It’s a literal, non-ironic “protect him at all costs” situation lol
He’d like it so much more in LA playing for the lakers
Am i the only one that feels he is not being himself…….all the answers seems from a PR machine with all the questions pre-discussed…..
I like players being themselves, making mistakes and building character from their mistake.
Giannis and Haliburton are great examples of players who speak their mind and feel more genuine…..
Giannis of the whole “ive never asked for a trade, but maybe sometimes you want to try a different breakfast” schtik? Piss off.
This is such a hater take.
As someone who’s been following his career for 4-5 years (since the U19 WC), I feel like Wemby has also been pretty consistent in trying to provide thoughtful, thorough, answers to media questions and avoid cliches. He’s obviously had a ton of media training, including learning English as a 2nd language, to prepare for this pathway.
But I dont know how you can listen to any of his interviews, over many years, and decide he’s not genuine (or least, on the chance he is fake- he does a better job than 99% of players in the NBA).
And piss off if you think his answers are vanilla, or “not making mistakes”. We’ve had multiple examples just this season of him being too honest, and trying to provide too much depth (rather than just cliched), that opposition fans have tried to clown him for: the “ethical basketball” comment, anytime he’s asked about OKC or any other rivals, or when he was asked to make his MVP case.
People complain about players using cliches, and then they complain when someone actually answers the questions asked. Now you want to complain that his answers are too perfect? Fuck off.
Cook the fraud
Dude calm down….i am sorry i have an opinion
An opinion that is the opposite to reality (or at least as much as we are privy to in public).
It would be like me saying that Dirk is a fake asshole. (Which is the complete opposite of what I think, but has just as much basis in, the publicly available, reality).
You’re not being called out for having an opinion. You’re being called out for basing it on dumbshit logic.
People really think expressing an opinion based on stupidity is okay and should not be called out.
He is an intelligent dude, how is he not being himself? Do you think its all an act?
He has said lots of things already that his PR department would prefer he not have mentioned. He does have very measured responses, which I suppose to some ears can come off as insincere, but remember that despite his fluency in English, he is not a native speaker. He is probably still translating questions in his head before he answers them and searching for proper words to use in his answers. I usually see him pause after questions and look thoughtful; it doesn’t seem like an affect to me or any kind of insincerity, just that he’s being careful of his words and that’s probably due to not being a native English speaker. If you’ve seen interviews where French reporters ask him questions, he rarely pauses and usually answers them immediately.
He certainly likes to choose his words but I don’t think Wemby has been disingenuous with what he has said so far. It clearly matters to him to present his view as accurately to his own view as he can, but he is well spoken
I don’t understand this take when people like to second guess what he says and says it’s performative and “not being himself”, when he does this consistently every single interview and press cons even before he was drafted. Why do you think he is not speaking his mind? Because he made no mistakes? Goodness gracious, stop over thinking it.
You all fawning over a word salad. jfc lmao
Just because you need adult literacy lessons doesn’t mean the rest of us do LMFAO
I admire your courage to speak without intelligence, and to admit that you have no intelligence.
It’s word salad to you, not to most of us.
