Court records showed Tim Donaghy made 134 phone calls to Scott Foster between October 2006 and April 2007, the same period Donaghy admitted to betting on games. These calls frequently occurred immediately before or after games that Donaghy was officiating, according to a 2008 Fox News report.

One of the many reasons people like this survive and thrive after being exposed is the corruption runs from the top… if your boss and their bosses and their bosses are involved in this shit. Lot of money has been made and still need to be made. It’s never going to be enough.
Foster was spared as a way to save David Stern’s image as a trustworthy commissioner. Donaghy was reckless with his betting, but the league couldn’t have it seem like it was a systematic issue, so they made Donaghy the sacrificial bad apple.
Ppl always say this but keeping that individual only puts into question the integrity of the league going forward. Why is it no players are forgiven for cheating but Scott foster gets a pass?
Maybe sparing the person you have dirt on means they are easily controlled & seems Scott foster has continued a questionable record as an official since. What’s his nickname for the playoffs again?
Plus they could have just quietly removed him from floor duty’s a couple years later.

I think the league wanted to put it on 1 dude and call it a personal failing than an entire league of corruption.
Exactly why Stern solicited snitches for the investigation, and Foster was MORE than happy to oblige.
And no one knows who the source was who released the Donaghy story to Murray Weiss at the NY post. There is speculation that the source was Stern himself. Donaghy was caught, and he was talking with the feds. It was though there might be a massive betting/fixing problem among the refs. Donaghy could have gone and wore a wire for the feds to get a deal, and that could have blown the doors off the idea that the NBA was a legitimate sport and not closer to pro wrestling. When word leaked that Donaghy was caught gambling, it immediately made it impossible for him to wear a wire and get dirt on other refs. Some speculate that stern or one of his subordinates released it to the Post to essentially kill Donaghy’s ability to wear a wire and then be able to pin it all on just him. If I remember correctly from a podcast I listened to about the scandal, Donaghy called Foster more than anyone else, including his family.
And yet everyone still clowns the Rockets for “28 straight missed 3s” when its not even remotely a true fact at all. Bro waved off 3s, took points completely off the board for inexplicable reasons among other disgusting ass things at the end of that series but because it was two of the most hated players of that generation on the short end of the stick (Harden and CP3) no one even batted an eye at the shit besides Rockets fans and fans of those players. Bro extended the series that was over and essentially gave GS the chance to come back and win and barely gets any shit for it at all yet people love mentioning his less blatant extension of other series like they were anywhere near as egregious as the Rockets debacle……

One of the first lessons you learn as a ref is: don’t engage with anyone you don’t have to, and don’t say anything more than needed when you do engage.
You just open yourself up to even more criticism and there’s no scenario where you’ll look good.
This shows what a massive ego Foster has.
And it also reminds me of a funny story. When I was in high school, our team was at one of our girls BB games sitting in the front row right on the sideline. The ref made a questionable call, and the other team was throwing it in right in front of us.
One of our guys calmly said to the ref, “that was one of the worst calls I’ve ever seen.” That’s it. Incredibly mild.
The ref turns around and yells, “don’t talk to me until you know the rules.”
My friend raises his voice and shoots back, “don’t blow your whistle until YOU know the rules.”
Needless to say, the ref came away looking way worse at that point, so I always kept that incident in mind when I started officiating games myself.

I’m a reds fan and watching Eugenio Suarez challenge two straight calls against CB and win them both was hilarious. The crowd was roaring. ABS is amazing.
How would a challenge system in the NBA work? A baseball strike is strictly defined with the ABS system, in that it must hit the zone. Whether it’s middle middle or grazes the edge by a hair, it’s a strike (which has already led to some annoyance from players when a pitch grazes the outside on a full count and gets them out).
Basketball fouls are very much still dictated by the ref’s perception, and Agent Extender here can say whatever he wants.
An eye in the sky that detects contact would probably be a good start. Then you program flop detecting technology into it. I’d be happy to develop it if the end result is Scott Foster and Tony Brothers going ballistic at being proven wrong 10 times a game.

The MLB for all its faults has repeatedly demonstrated a willingness to make changes to the game address the biggest issues fans have. The NBA is almost exactly the opposite. I wouldn’t hold my breath.

It was playoffs we were watching carmelo knicks against i think boston. foster was a total dick all night.
