Had to find this thread on page 3. Yikes where are all the NY fans?
I dont feel like there was any clear storyline other than Knicks slightly outplayed the hawks across the board. A little better shooting, a little better rebounding. Basically controlled the game start to finish without blowing the doors off. Kinda as expected for the favored home team.
No clear new insight or takeaway other than general basketball common knowledge. Shoot better and win. Will be interesting to see what adjustments are made

Nope. Hawks were on 3 fouls with 6 mins left in the qtr. immediately put themselves in the penalty when Rob came in. In a game where the Knicks were called for 3 more fouls than the Hawks, the free throw numbers directly come down to the decision to put themselves in the penalty.
People really dont understand how screwed you are going into the bonus. Its oddly enough one of the the things I learned from Tim Donaughy years ago how he explained about manipulating a game. It was basically how important the bonus is and early foul trouble and the impact on rotations.
Its a little more pronounced in college just because its halfs in college basketball but it drastically changes how you play defense especially how teams routinely get into the double bonus late in games.
New York has been a hated team by Pistons fans after 6 playoff games of Brunson flopping. (He did clean up his act as the series went on, but games 1 and 2 were egregious).
The Knicks didn’t play like they could sweep the Hawks, but you just knew theyd’d go a gear that Atlanta can’t get to yet in their building stage

Is it fair to say that Hawks are one superstar scorer elite shot creator away from being a dark horse contender? I feel like their offense stagnated in the 2nd half and no one picked up the slack

Jalen Johnson needs to be a little more like Jayson Tatum or Cade Cunningham. He’s got the skill set but doesn’t have the driving ability to put pressure on the rim and get his teammates open shots.

The Hawks are more interesting though. Lots of storylines and they are the new team to the party this year. The ball is more fun too with all these castoff Lakers, Warriors, Wizards pieces and Brunson isn’t a guy you tune in specifically to watch.

game went basically as advertised. hawks with no playoff experience in a hostile environment kept it somewhat close but never threatened. will be interesting to see how we come out for game 2
It’s gonna be a good series but I feel Kat is gonna come out stronger to start next game, feeling a 30 bomb from him, we just need our bench to do what they did today
We need NAW to get going and Jalen needs to play like he did in the second half the entire time or this will be a quick one. Still though, call me weak or whatever but I’m just happy we’re here and this season has already been a huge success.

I actually think the Hawks played really well in this game, which is a compliment to them, but also a compliment to the Knicks because in the end it wasn’t that close.
Knicks didn’t even play that well offensively either.

McCollum has had a history of shrinking in the playoffs, has to be NAW or Johnson. I say Johnson, but it’s dependent

I like this season for ATL fans and I understand what they are trying to build, but as Trae stan I really wanted to see the team with Trae instead of CJ. Trae was traded for nothing, just one more playoffs run and if you don’t make it to the ECF then you trade for the same scrap.
Trae isn’t the 3pt shooter and overall shot creator that CJ is. I think Atlanta got better once the team revolved around Jalen Johnson, and ball movement became more prevalent.
Trae & Quin got along but he could never run Quin’s offense how it needed to be, which is happening now with CJ and why we went on such a run

Iirc, you could have trade Trae even after he would have picked his option. The addition of NAW is fantastic. Trae gravity is fantastic for DD.
With him on the court, DD/NAW, you will always have a good backcourt defense.
The team barely played with him this year, I swear I might be delulu but I truly got your team as a dark horse with him.
This was the perfect example of a game that stayed technically close-ish but was out of reach the entire time.

There is a possiblity that in hawks Castle might be another Amen/Ausar Thompson (wing with great athleticism but zero spacing= anemic half court offense) since at the Spurs Castle improved his 3pt shooting and is showing confidence in hitting 3s same with Carter Bryant.
