He’s lucky he won in 2021 or he would be one of the biggest “what ifs” in NBA history, given how dominant he was at his peak.

He brought us our first title in 50 years, we helped him develop into probably the single most improved player from rookie season to peak in the history of the NBA. I don’t think anybody failed anybody, we just weren’t as successful as we could possibly have been.

hot take that a lot of people aren’t ready to hear: giannis is washed. the dude is always injured, he still can’t shoot a 3, creates drama with his team, execs aren’t willing to give up the assets for him relative to his actual production, he demands things from the org like contracts for his brothers, etc. it was a fun few years while he was dominating on both sides of the floor and winning MVPs and titles and DPOYs but that time has passed.

It’s weird because before the last year or so he wasn’t necessarily injury prone in general he just got hurt at the worst possible moments so you could say it was just bad luck

This year though all the lower body injuries for a player in his 30s with his playstyle are concerning

Middleton turning into a 3rd option due to Injuries is what forced the Dame trade.

Feels more like bad timing than failure. When he’s actually on the floor he’s still dominant, Bucks just haven’t had the luck or consistency around him.

Honestly this is one of the most frustrating things to watch as a basketball fan. When Giannis is healthy and locked in he is genuinely one of the most unstoppable forces in the league. Those 2025 numbers against Indiana were ridiculous. The problem is the Bucks roster around him was always a bit shaky when it mattered and now he’s dealing with availability questions on top of that. I think both the Bucks and Giannis share some blame but at this point whoever lands him next needs to build a proper supporting cast around him

Before this year, Giannis had some unfortunate injuries at unfortunate times.

This year, he legit looked like an injury risk just by playing. Don’t know if the Eurobasket took its toll, but still.

In 2023 it was an unfortunate injury because Kefvin Love tried to draw a charge. Giannis was injured, but he would be fine if he rested like 2 weeks. Unfortunately he and the Bucks did not have 2 weeks.

In 2024 he was forced to return earlier than he should because when Giannis sat, with only Lillard the Bucks had a 3-5 record. Compared to 7-1, when only Giannis played with Dame out. But the injury was more severe this time, meaning he needed about 1-2 months, again time that he and the Bucks did not have to spare.

And in 2025 he was fine.

This year however is the first time I’m thinking he needs the Kawhi treatment going forward if he wants to remain elite. And no matter what anyone says, he was getting fouled harder than anyone else in the league. There were multiple games where players would just slam him in the ground in order to not let him score. He can no longer carry the team on his own. Especially this team as currently constructed.

Doc Rivers is a good first step, but I don’t know if he’ll even be here next season.

It’s completely understandable to look at this timeline and feel frustrated, but phrasing it as “Did the Bucks fail Giannis or did Giannis fail the Bucks?” is a massive false dichotomy. The reality is a brutal mix of terrible injury luck and a rapidly aging roster.

If we have to break it down, here is why neither narrative tells the whole story:

1. Giannis didn’t “fail” the Bucks; his playstyle just comes with an attrition tax. You can’t blame a guy for getting hurt. Giannis’s entire game is built on relentless, downhill physicality, and as he entered his late 20s, that wear and tear caught up with him at the worst possible times (the back injury in ‘23, the calf strain in ‘24). When he is actually on the floor, he delivers. Look at those 2025 numbers: 33.0 PTS, 15.4 REB, 6.6 AST on 60% shooting. Those are historic, video-game numbers. If a player drops 33/15/6 in a series and loses in 5 games, that player did not fail the team.

2. The Bucks front office didn’t exactly “fail” him, but they ran out of assets and defensive identity. You have to give the front office credit for pushing all their chips in to get Damian Lillard—they didn’t just sit on their hands. However, they did fail to manage the aging curve of the 2021 championship core.

• The Perimeter Defense: Losing Jrue Holiday and Jevon Carter destroyed the point-of-attack defense.
• The Aging Core: Brook Lopez and Khris Middleton aged out of being reliable, two-way playoff dominators.
• The Coaching Carousel: Going from Budenholzer to Griffin to Rivers in the span of a year absolutely nuked the team’s continuity and defensive schemes.

The Verdict: The 2025 series is the ultimate proof. Giannis was fully healthy, played out of his mind, and they still got bounced in 5 games by Indiana. That tells you everything you need to know. Giannis’s injuries in ‘23 and ‘24 masked the deeper structural flaws of the roster.

Nobody “failed” anybody on purpose. The Bucks went all-in to maximize Giannis’s prime, won a ring in 2021, and are now paying the inevitable price of an aging roster combined with horribly timed injuries. It sucks, but it’s the reality of the modern NBA.

Both tbh but more so the org. Any team that empties its assets for him is going to regret it within a season. He’s still great, but his game, age, and injury trend are a terrible long-term bet.

The 2023 series against the Heat was due to a failed execution down the stretch of both games 4 and 5. They were up by double digits in the 4th quarter in both games, which imo, is really why Bud was fired. They had no business losing that series even with Giannis at less than full health.

2024 had both Giannis and Dame out or at less than full health. This is the one that changed the whole outcome of how the whole Dame trade was viewed because Khris was finally balling and healthy as well. With him at that level, the Bucks would’ve been SCARY.

Then last year Dame had to be rushed back and it was already a last gasp.

Overall, 2022 still hurts the most because Khris getting hurt against the Bulls basically was the beginning of the end. With how Giannis was dominating the Celtics for the first 5 games of that series, they were going back to the Finals. Alas, Giannis was out of gas midway through game 6 and that was basically it

Sucks that his prime had been wasted

Just genuinely disappointing as a basketball fan that we haven’t seen more of peak Giannis, especially in the post season. Glad he managed that one ring because he is a fucking beast when healthy and that finals series in particular was absolutely wild. He could have easily been a foot-note in the history of the NBA if he didn’t have that dream run including an arguably top 5ish finals series of all time.

Not to make this another classic LeBron thread… but the amount of games a lot of the elite players have missed in the playoffs over the last decade or so really puts the fact that LeBron hasn’t missed a single playoff game in almost 200 games into perspective. Shitloads of luck involved obviously, but a literal terminator.

It’s really both honestly. The Bucks clearly had some of their best rosters in that 2021 window and then it kind of fell apart around him. But also missing 8 out of 16 possible playoff games is a brutal stat. When he’s healthy he’s still one of the most dominant players in the league and those 2025 numbers against Indiana were insane. The injury timing has just been incredibly unlucky and it’s hard not to wonder what could have been with even average playoff health.

Giannis fails nobody. He’s been plagued by injuries at the worst possible moments and that’s just bad luck more than anything else. When he has actually played in the playoffs he’s been a monster, the 2025 series against Indiana showed that. The bigger question for me is whether Milwaukee was ever built correctly around him. They had a window with the Khris Middleton era and just never quite got over the hump. Now the roster has changed again and it’s a different situation.

Both honestly but injuries were a bigger factor than people give credit for. Watching that 2023 series against Miami was painful, he clearly wasn’t right from the jump and you could see it in his movement. When he actually got to play a full series this year against Indiana he was an absolute force, 33 points and 15 boards a night is other worldly. The Bucks front office has to own some of this too though, they never built the right pieces around him especially on the defensive end when it mattered most in the playoffs.
