I used to think that the announcement will happen after the draft lottery and before the draft. But now I think it will happen between the draft and the start of free agency. There’s just too much happening between the draft lottery and the draft that the league wouldn’t want to distract from. But there’s about a week between the draft and the start of free agency where there’s nothing to distract from. And it gives the league a chance to allow the frenzy of free agency to overshadow the announcement after a few days.

It won’t surprise me if the NBA waits to see how the several of federal criminal investigations play out. See if charges are brought.

The most likely punishment would be to lose a couple first rounders….but the Clippers don’t have one until 2030. So there’s a few years to play with and the NBA can block them from trading 2030 if they want to.

If the NBA takes action, Ballmer probably sues the league. That opens the NBA up to discovery. And it might be easier for the NBA to take action if more charges are brought.

It’s not out of the realm of possibility that Ballmer could face criminal charges and prison depending on the fact pattern. If Aspiration was touting Ballmers investments as evidence that Ballmer vouched for the company’s investment prospectus, that’s potentially SEC fraud. And if part of the quid pro quo was Ballmer getting in a calm to say, “Yes. I think Aspiration is a great investment.” when he was really just using it as a pass thru…..that would be Ballmer in the crosshairs.
