[All NBA Podcast] Last night, Draymond guarded the ball-handler (Kawhi) on 21 on-ball picks, the most he’s guarded in a single game since December, 2021. The Clippers scored a measly 0.5 points per direct on those actions. Generational defender.
Yeah. I love to hate on Draymond as much as the next guy, but come on. This was a fucking masterclass.
Kawhi didn’t score in the fourth when Dray was checking him, which was most of the Q. Only score was a garbage time dunk
2019 revenge arc for Draymond
And it’s crazy because if he was puking and stuff like that it makes it even more legendary of a performance lol
We hate Draymond but they don’t win those championships without him and he’s going to be a Hall of Famer for a reason. Very impressive last night
yup. One of my least favorite players, but that might have been the greatest defensive half I have ever seen by a player.
I remember when Warriors fans were trying to tell me Klay > Draymond lol
The casual ones
“the casual ones” = almost everyone on reddit and any fan I met in person (I used to travel to Cali often for work)
Cali? My brother
Yeah, Cali. Where I used to travel up to San Fran from Los Angeleeze on I5.
People from Cali still call it Cali sometimes. Get over it.
Nope
casual spotted
I’m sure Warriors fans were saying that, but ranking Draymond over Klay was way more common among Warrior fans than non-Warrior fans.
is Draymond a top 10 defender of all time?
Absolutely
Much as I hate to say it, he definitely is Last night’s performance showcased it and that’s old draymond
Its insane he can still move so quickly laterally at his size and age
His wingspan helps
Apparently not just old Draymond but puking sick Draymond
Yeah I just saw that. Crazy shit dude
Flu game like MJ. That means the Warriors are probably gonna crash out against the Suns because relying on pukey Draymond seems unlikely to pay off twice in a row lol.
Lol probably I don’t have a dog in the west besides the kings but if I had to pick a team it’d be the spurs
Idk whether they can beat Denver and OKC yet, this is still Wemby’s 1st playoffs. But we’re gonna see you in the 1st round. 😈
Oh fuck am I having a civil conversation with a sixers fan and not know. Well wont matter celtics in 5
Nuh uh we’re gonna upset you in 6, battle of the injury recoverees
We’ll see i guess but Joel even said it’s not a rivalry we just kick your ass
Only if you know ball
Yep.
Top 10 in all defense selections. Most active all defense team selections with nine. Next is Rudy with eight.
IMO, he’s one of the best versatile defenders ever. Dude can hawk you on the perimeter and bang down low and be your safety on defense too. When he’s not assaulting players, the dude still knows how to play lock down defense
Don’t forget he is the best fast break killer ever as the single defender back against a 2 or 3 on 1. He has an incredible talent for disrupting those without putting dudes on the line.
I tend to agree. Is Rudy top 10? I feel like both of them while very different players are in a similar tier at/just below top 10.
yea, 4x DPOY pretty much locks him into top 10 convos. Dikembe and Wallace are the only other two do ever do it with Dwight trailing as the only 3x DPOY winner.
I personally have both Rudy and Dray circling Top 5 all time with Dray ahead by way of versatility.
Hard to evaluate Bill Russell so sometimes I leave him off my list because I can’t properly rate him. I think I probably underrate David Robinson and a few other guys, but I can only watch so much film as a casual.
I mean Rudy has to be top 10, no? You can’t just say his 4XDPOY doesn’t count because you don’t like him lol. He’s also pretty much the only center that is judged by his ability to guard ones and twos at the three-point line lol. No one says that Dwight Howard doesn’t deserve his DPOYs cause he can’t guard Derrick Rose iso on the perimeter lmao
At least one and probably more of those DPOYs belong to Draymond if I’m giving them out, but Rudy was defensive Jokic (automatic elite D if he’s on the court) for what, a decade? He’s gotta be in the Top 10. That said, awards are overrated in these historical discussions before like 2015 because of how ignorant we all were about efficiency and advanced stats. It ended up being a lot about PR and rep and less about outcomes.
Russell Hakeem Dray Rudy KG Pippen MJ Rodman Duncan Wilt
I could definitely hear arguments for/against the people I didn’t see play like Russell and Wilt but those new blocks numbers for Wilt are just insane, and Russell was better than that.
Sometimes I forget he has 4 all star selections
He was 7th in mvp before
He was the 2nd most important player on the most winning regular season team in basketball, it’d be weird if he didn’t get any votes
Yet the casuals say he would be a G leaguer without Steph and Klay
He’d be a great defender dishing to bricklayers on a bad team. The Kerr system highlights his offensive prowess as a facilitator and its likely he wouldn’t be as recognized on a bad team for that but his defense would likely have been acknowledged no matter where he went.
Exactly. It’s not like playing with Steph and Klay changes his defense at all whatsoever. He’s the best defender of the generation no matter what. He would be recognized - even if on a bad team he might not have championships. That was the case even for Lebron after all…
Draymond averages more assists without Steph btw over the last 11 years
100%
Easily
This isn’t even a question
I think he has a solid case for top 5. Best defender of his generation.
To me, he’s 5th at worst. Acknowledging my bias, I have him as the best defender of all time.
I honestly think he’s top 5. But he’s also a top 5 cunt in NBA history, easily
Absolutely, and was the second most important player on those GSW teams.
this is a fucking sick compilation + camera angle.
more of this shit please NBA
^^ this
People forget that while KD to the warriors supercharged the dynasty, Draymond replacing David Lee in the Warriors starting lineup raised them from a good team to a contender. Plus him being able to guard 1-5 is one of the reasons why their death-ball lineups were so effective.
Yep, true ballers know that Curry + Draymond have always been the most important warriors.
Draymond being able to slide down and shut down Jaylen Brown is a big part of why we won in ‘22.
Also on an emotional level he was the alpha rival to LeBron. When LeBron was coasting at the peak of his powers, Draymond was the guy reminding him that he was in a fight and making him less comfortable. You need that person when you go to war especially when the most talented player is on the other team.
I’m a warriors fan. This genuinely might be one of the dumbest things I’ve heard somebody use as praise.
He put the damn clamps on Kawhi…Ive never seen Kawhi clamped like that
Facts, very odd, usually he at least can get to his spot and get a bad shot up
He wasn’t even getting close
AG does a great job. Stronger forwards who don’t have to carry a scoring load get him.
Yeah a combination of this and blitzing him can really mess with Kawhi’s rhythm. The wall plus draymond made it impossible for kawhi to get a rhythm. Great game plan by Kerr
Ah man, this is beautiful defense. Okay, I’ve got to rant about this for a sec.
Kawhi’s main method of getting down hill as an old man is using timing and tempo mixups to create little gaps of space that either let him pull up, or leverage the threat of his shot to create contact and drive through his defender. Against the Warriors in particular, he’s really trying to exploit his size advantage against their small ball lineups, so the Clippers main method of attack is wing-to-guard PnR to spring him downhill or force space for a 3. You can see him repeatedly bringing Curry and Podz into the action, only shifting over to more standard wing-to-big PnR once that’s proven not to work.
So, what are the defensive advantages of small-to-small screens? Normally, there’s a degree of switch protection, but that’s not really the case with Kawhi since he wants the switch to begin with. Instead, the thing Golden State can really capitalize on is the mobility advantage. Smalls can more easily hedge and double the ball-handler, both because they can get out to the level of the screen faster and because they can recover to their man more efficiently.
However, this still leaves things for the Clippers to attack. A double obviously leaves the roller wide open, and a hedge can be punished by the offensive player attacking downhill as the hedge is forced to retreat. This is where Draymond comes in, because he’s completely shutting off Kawhi’s ability to access these options. If you look closely at the moment before each screen, Draymond is often shading Kawhi to the opposite side of the screen, encouraging him to use them. Then, as Kawhi tries to use the pick, Draymond closes the distance and creates contact in the direction that Kawhi is moving. This keeps Draymond nice and close to Kawhi as he comes off the pick, but it also forces Kawhi to take a very high, very wide path off of each screen.
This does two things:
It makes the pass back to the roller incredibly difficult. Because Kawhi is forced so far outside, Draymond can more easily block off any angles back towards the roller. It’s still possible to thread this pass through, but Kawhi isn’t a dangerous playmaker to begin with, so the fact that the angle is really small to begin with prevents him from making that pass nine times out of ten.
It makes it way, WAY harder for Kawhi to attack straight downhill into the space that the hedging defender would leave. His momentum is pushed so far up the court that it’s extremely difficult for Kawhi to try and redirect himself down into the paint. Instead, he’s forced to make a curved run, coming in from the wing and pushing inwards. This gives Draymond an incredibly efficient inside angle to chase with, since he can just play off of Kawhi’s inside shoulder and completely stonewall him from the basket. On top of all of that, since the curved drive travels a further distance than a straight-line drive, any paint help has way more time to arrive and get set before Kawhi can potentially take a shot.
From there, it’s kind of game over. Kawhi isn’t a good enough playmaker to break the trap to begin with, and the contact means he can’t get downhill without being completely inhaled by Draymond. His best bet for individual scoring would either be pulling from 3 aggressively or getting Draymond into the mid-range and then trying to size him up, but either one is a pretty terrible idea given you’re either shooting into a hedge or isolating one of the best perimeter defenders of all time. It’s beautifully executed defense.
Good breakdown. Appreciate it
De-fense
clap clap
Draymond can defend. He’s one of the greats at it. I hate his antics but ball don’t lie
Reddit won’t like this.
Kawhi was having fits all night. Draymond did an amazing job at pressing him and making it difficult. Those steals and deflections were amazing
Now that’s Kawhi’s older and slower, Draymond is his worst matchup.
Draymond green is 36 years old
Yeah but Kawhi is much more slower than his prime self. Dray is his worst matchup
Not sure about the disparity, Dray looks a LOT quicker in old highlights
illiterate comment lol
Now that Draymond is older and slower
Draymond is not much slower than how he was at his best years compared to Kawhi lol
Truly stupid play calling or just incredibly low iq screening by the Clippers.
They are blitzing and doubling him, Kawhi is never good at coming out double teams but the positioning of other players is dogshit
Yeah. Either they are lingering too long. Or they are too far. They all should know kawhi’s deficiency on this. It’s been like it for years. But they are making it way harder
You would think the coaching staff had them prepared but clippers were no near ready for warriors game plan
Kawhi need to work on his double team court vision
this will never happen
Draymond was guarding Kawhi like he owe him money 😭
But where are the blocked shots and all the stats I can see listed in a column, hmmmmm? (/S)
Seriously underrated throughout the Warriors dynasty, and should have more than 1 dpoy.
Draymond is a winner. The warriors don’t have a dynasty without him. He might not play pretty basketball but it gets the job done.
Related: towards the end of the 4th he winced and grabbed his knee area like he just sustained a non-contact knee/achilles injury, right? Is that something he does sometimes? Like sorta feign an injury, lul the enemy to drop their guard?
Never seen him feign an injury like that.
Look at me, I’m de Klaw now
Jerry Stackhouse deserves credit as the Warriors coach most focused on defense
Feels like Kawhi is a pretty ethical baller, if it was some other dude, Draymond would probably in foul trouble or would have been ejected by the 3rd quarter due to tilt.
I cant stand that donkey but damn did he clamp down
Draymond’s defense coupled with Kawhi’s weakness at punishing double teams really broke the Clippers in the clutch.
This Draymond Green guy is pretty good at defense huh?
Ball Don’t Lieeeee, it don’t lieeee 😈
Draymond was awesome but man these NBA coaches are so trash. Like if you told me the gameplan is for Kawhi to catch the ball 35 feet from basketball and have Brooke Lopez play 37 minutes of drop pnr defense Id have told you Clippers lose
Yeah the Clippers completely went stupid late game
They were running plays early and doing well, late game it just turned into let’s make Kawhi the point guard and go hero ball
Yup pretty much. Especially when the Warriors showed they are going to blitz every time he catches outside the 3 point line. They did the exact same thing the entire 2nd half and Clippers made 0 changes lol
Facts
Ty Lues fault, he honestly is overrated
They instantly swarmed Kawhi and destroyed any chance of running a play but they kept doing the same thing every time
Draymond is too big for Kawhi to just bully too like he does with other guys and Kawhi didn’t look like he had a spark in his step to get by him like he usually could, maybe the ankle was still bothering him
Regardless, best performance I’ve seen from Draymond in awhile and worst from Kawhi in awhile
What’s your plan for center for the Clippers?
The center rotation is so thin once Yanic got injured. Any hopes of Clippers making any noise died when he went down
