To be fair to many of us who wanted a suspension initially, LaMelo speaking was enough to remind some of us that he’s not dirty, he’s just really really stupid

They’ve got another game to play. Wouldn’t a flagrant in the next game cause a suspension in the playoffs?

The caveat though is the Playin flagrants points are RESET to 0 for the playoffs.

It’s not fake, it’s just them following the rules and precedent. The Play-in just happens to have this weird exclusion from the rest of the playoffs, but that’s across the board for all stats. I think they need to fix that so the play-in is counted as part of the playoffs, but the NBA has to follow the rules that they set until or if it is officially changed.

People act like Adam Silver is handing out punishments based on what he thinks players deserve, but in reality, there are procedures that are put in place for determining punishment in order to prevent bias from the adjudicator toward any particular player

He should’ve been penalized during the game. But suspending him was always a wild idea. It does nothing to remedy the damage to the Heat and it would be an inappropriate punishment for the Hornets.

Yup. It’s as simple as something like if a player is hurt, the refs can review anything at their discretion.

I actually only found out about this rule a few years ago, coincidentally during a hornet vs heat game. It was late in the 4th quarter, Miami hit what looked like a 3, but upon further review was actually a 2 with his toe on the line. By the time someone from the Hornets realized it, 2-3 possessions had already passed and there was nothing the refs could do, even though the Jumbotron had clear as day footage on it. Regulation ended in a tie, and the heat would go on to win in OT. Blew my mind that they couldn’t review something like that after the fact.

I like Danny Leroux’s take that once the refs realized what happened they should have immediately given him a double tech the next time he complained at all. Would be bad process but correct result and the refs have a lot of leeway on techs 

I mean causing injury through malicious play should always be severely punished… but Spo is right that there is proper time for it and that time is in the middle of the game. If he is not going to Get F2 during the game then what’s good is this for Miami? You can’t change the outcome of already finished game.

So like he said you have to move on, at that stage it’s 2 late to play detectives.

The attention should be on horrible refs who didn’t even bother to check what happened after the best heat player was removed from the entire game. Did they think he did it to himself or what ? Terrible decision by refs. They should way more hate than lamelo.

The simple reason is it’s the playoffs and those who don’t want to read or respect the rules will want exaggerated justice for their team.

There will be a bunch more of these “Stern would have layed down suspensions and bans before end of game” ( I call them punishment bidder) who just want to hear themselves sound like a dictator more than they want justice.

Didn’t they suspend Dillan Brooks for a game after he injured GP2 in the 22 playoffs? Or did he accumulate too many flagrant fouls?

It would be stranger if they didn’t review it.

Show us one example of a similar play that resulted in a suspension. Another commenter showed very similar plays by Siakam and Draymond that resulted in flagrant 1’s. 

Lamelo did the same ankle grab to Bam this regular season and didn’t get suspended.

I’d settle for a rule change moving forwards. The entire League would benefit from there being a clear way for refs to address this during the game regardless of situation.

Suspending him now doesn’t do anything for us. Making it clear he can’t do it a third time is what matters and the League failed on that.

They are pouring on the downvotes heavy for the truth. There’s no point even arguing, these morons won’t care until it happens to one of their team’s stars. That said, I agree with Spo it’s something that has to be addressed in the game. No point in punishing Lamelo now. And I hope everybody see that they have the greenlight to just injure the other team’s best player.
