This is such a vast simplification of what’s actually happening in that moment that it almost makes no sense.

Streaming isn’t a single video/audio file being transmitted. It’s actually a dozen plus different streams of information being stitched together on your device by the client. The video, audio, captions, and a bunch of other stuff are all being repackaged into the displayed stream you end up watching.

This is absolutely a problem, but I also know that it isn’t an easy thing for one person to fix. It’s a big engineering task that probably goes across multiple teams and the operations crew as well.

I would hazard a guess that this isn’t an issue with the audio engineer. I don’t know how prime has their server side infrastructure set up, but I would be shocked if this wasn’t a software issue. It is not difficult to fix. The amount and type of equipment the broadcast crew is working with there are probably a dozen different ways to sync up audio and video (typically just by delaying one or the other, in this case the audio)

I wonder though if it’s something down the line in Amazon’s streaming service. I know the types of people who work broadcast and I find it hard to believe they’d let this go out for an entire game let alone multiple. I’m thinking that somewhere in the delivery Amazon is fucking up the sync. And it’s possible that the delay changes so the broadcast guys can’t fix it by just inserting delay somewhere.

Edit: BTW if it really bugs you and you care enough to do this you can probably fix it yourself if you have any kind of soundbar or audio receiver (basically external speakers not using the internal ones on your TV). Since it is the audio that is coming too early you should be able to find delay settings on whatever device it is and change it until it matches up (easiest to do this when you can see people talking). Just remember to set it back if you’ve got anyone else in the household or you will drive them insane lol.

I definitely think its being caused by Amazon’s streaming setup. The NBA’s highlights video seems properly sync’d, and that went up not that long after the game.

That video is probably going to use the raw footage captured locally (since the NBA has access to it and its of the best possible quality), and the delay in release can be reasonably attributed to editing and rendering.

If I had to guess at possible reasons why its not being easily fixed… it might be that the desync is inconsistent. Like, I could tell that the audio was off from the video a bit last night, but it didn’t feel this extreme. And if the desync is inconsistent, that might mean more core, structural issues at play here, which might a particularly thorny problem to solve…

Yeah that is the theory I am going with as well. It’s entirely possible that the delivery could be like off 500 milliseconds in Texas, for example, but 750 milliseconds in New York. In which case the broadcast can’t fix it because if you sync it up for New York then it is desync’d for Texas.

I don’t really know streaming stuff as much as broadcast so don’t know the specifics on how that could happen but it would make sense to me that it could be different per region or even per user.

Like I said I think that the broadcast crew would definitely notice and/or be informed of this during the game and they could (and would) very easily fix it with the tools they have available. There’s no way this would go on for multiple games in different locations if it was a consistent sync issue. No reason broadcast couldn’t just stick a delay on the audio, they almost certainly already have delays set for typical operation and would just need to adjust them.

Amazon (and other broadcasts too) delay the main video feed. So while it seems like the audio is ahead, really it’s the video that is behind.

Other videos, like under the basket, don’t have a delay.

You can easily notice this when the truck cuts from under the basket, back to the main video. You see a free throw shot go through the hoop, then the truck cuts back to the main, and the ball goes through the hoop again.

If I recall, you can fix it by skipping back once. I’m pretty sure it’s the video taking longer than the audio to load the piece, then the audio rendering (playing) before the video renders. I use a web plugin that bypasses the built in skip buttons (it tries to skip in the cache first as some web players jump the cache and just skip with a new request), and I can fix it be seeking via the keyboard shortcuts.

I noticed this while watching NFL games last season and accidentally discovered that. At first, I also thought that it was just broken.

in a lot of broadcasts things are set to a slight delay in order for graphics to function properly. baseball for example the CF camera is about 10-15 frames off so the Strikezone function works for the viewer. amazon must be doing something slightly more drastic so their graphics time up better is my only guess

And then there’s the NBA’s official highlights on YouTube, which don’t appear to be desynced at all, and that video went up not long after the game ended. Maybe they were correcting the sync while building up the highlights reel during the game, or maybe the direct feed they’re getting at the stadium is properly synced, but the sync gets lost once it starts to enter Amazon’s distribution service…

NBA’s raw feed would have the original audio that hasn’t been adjusted. at least that’s how it is with baseball. and yes they sync the audio up to the CF cam but they still have issues. watch any game where they have the ISO of the pitcher in the stretch from 3b/1b and when they cut back to the CF cam in the middle of his delivery you’ll notice you go back a few frames

I never had this issue with Amazon’s football broadcasts, but it has been an issue all season long for basketball. Audio and video way out of sync, usually with the audio ahead of the video, but I’ve also had it the other way around. Backing out and launching again fixes it for anywhere from 30 seconds to a few minutes, but yeah its pretty awful, has been all season.

Amazon broadcast isn’t even half as bad as peacock

Never had a problem with it on Amazon but the audio always gets fucked after every single commercial on peacock

Even network broadcasts suffer from this but it is a much shorter delay. You can always hear the ball swish the net or hit the rim before you see it. It can easily be fixed but the networks/cable carriers don’t care

Aside from the audio delay, which is extremely annoying, I felt like the audio management in general was terrible.

The pre game discussion with the Amazon crew was inaudible for a while because they were playing arena noise over it. And the rest of the steam it felt like they would switch audio from arena mic, to commentary, to side line reporting, to the studio again with the least smooth transitions.

I could just be cranky that I didn’t get my typical blazer stream, but it felt amateur to me all night. Aside from the video quality being good, the audio felt like a constant disaster. That was my first real experience watching a game on Amazon and I was disappointed in the production.

Tinfoil Hat what if it’s on purpose? If the announcers announce the exciting moment before it happens the viewer who is only half watching can look up and catch it live.

Seems like the slight desync is annoying to the avid watcher but for the casual fan but might be a benefit.

I hate this possibility but dunno, seems plausible.

Ya I think it’s on purpose. They want the announcer to react exactly on time with the play and move the audio up slightly but they just pushed it too far

Another annoying thing about the Amazon broadcast - it forces my TV to use an ‘optimized’ setting that maxes out my brightness and completely saturates the screen. The best part is you can’t disable to modify any picture settings at all. Other people seem to be able to disable it but my model appears to be exempt.

I just watched the clip OP posted and the one at the top of the first page on half speed. Harlan start saying good right as the ball hits the rim. I think it is a little bit too early, but not nearly as bad as OP implies or Bill Simmons.

I don’t think it’s a problem everywhere is maybe why it’s hard to fix. I don’t think I have this issue when I stream from Prime. It could be a load issue in some areas but not in others.
