My litmus test for whether people know ball or not is what their opinion is of Draymond Green the basketball player. Guy is insane
Insane player and person. Not a big fan of him but he is an absolutely generational defender.
I’d almost go so far to say that he’s a one-of-one defender. His defense is almost like Curry’s shooting.
At his size and athleticism, he does more because of it. The strength and athleticism somebody like rodman was a tool he could combine with a great basketball IQ. Dray is either considerably slower or smaller than the people he defends, and puts master classes on. He can guard the joker one night, kawhi Leonard the next, and KD the following. And he doesn’t just do well. They play BAD.
There are absolutely better players at individual defenses out there. But if you were to average out the entire package, I think Dray stands alone
Dray is the only defender out there that I think could do a credible job guarding every type of offensive player. He can switch onto the shiftiest point guards and go toe-to-toe with Jokic and AD. It’s outrageous.
He just has really long arms and a low center of gravity. So its really hard to back him down, and he can reach up/out to poke/block the ball. Combine that with insane bball iq and incredible drive and too much heart and you have one of the greatest defenders of all time.
Yep. Some people are called one through five defenders, but it’s very rare that they excel at all of them. They excel at one side of that, and are just proficient at the other.
Normally big guys with long arms and the athleticism to use them to kind of keep up with the smaller guys.
Dray doesn’t do that. He’s like a surgeon sometimes, just using a scalpel to carve their offense to pieces, doesn’t matter who it is.
Makes me so curious at both their peaks how well could Dray guard Steph in scrims.

There have been seasons where Gobert was the better regular season defender tbf. But with the chips down in the postseason Draymond is one of the greatest of all time defensively.
For the past 5 years or so Dray plays serious about half of the regular season. So it’s mostly fair. But everyone knows who gets the respect as the best. Dray doesn’t just play good defense. He LEADS the defense.
Is there anyone greater? Wemby will probably eclipse him but I can’t think of a single player with a comparable postseason defensive resume.
I’m sure there’s people out there who would say Bill Russell or something like that, but in the modern NBA era I can’t think of anyone who has so many moments. Health willing Wemby will eclipse every defender ever, but Draymond is the greatest postseason defender I’ve ever seen so far.
He’s absolutely rough to watch sometimes, but has never played without a winning policy. His only big thing to critique are the technicals, but he quite firmly does all the dirty work that the Warriors need
And sometimes as a little treat, he tosses in some dirty work they don’t need!

We’ve seen a lot of great defensive Draymond stretches, but those last few defensive gems were some of the best defensive IQ plays I’ve ever seen – and he’s been in the league for 14 years.
