One of the more interesting stats I’ve come across ahead of the Nuggets-Timberwolves first round matchup.

They always seem to take it down to the wire. Will go down as one of the greatest duos of all time.

(In case someone was curious, the one series where they didn’t go to a game 7 or win was the 2020 conference finals where they lost in 5 to the lakers)

It just really shows you need an elite duo to have playoff success. In the Thunder case, I think it’s really just Shai + really great role players. If he had a true #2 they’d be even scarier

Yeah the Thunder is an extreme example of having really insane depth plus a 2A/2B situation behind SGA. Technically with the pre KD Warriors people would say that was Klay and Dray, but most of us know in terms of overall impact Dray was the clear #2 back then.

Obviously offensively, that wasn’t the case at all though (except in the 2016 Finals for example, 2016 Dray was really built different offensively). Of course most of the time, Klay was considered the clear 2nd option when we didn’t have KD, even if Iggy or Dray or whoever might have been 2nd in scoring in some series. 2016 WCF alone shows how high Klay’s ceiling is (and plenty of absurd Regular Season games ofc).

So even then, Klay and Dray can’t really be compared to JDub and Chet, because I think it’s really the full depth of OKC’s bench that makes the difference for them moreso. Especially on offense, they really rely on Shai, so it’s the fact pretty much EVERYONE on the team is a great or even elite defender that makes them so strong.

We also can’t even forget the fact that a lot of the time it wasn’t even JDub or Chet who was the 2nd most important player to the team, a lot of the time it felt like it was IHart.

I remember in 2022 when they lost in the First Round with no Murray. Then in 2023 they won. Then 2024 and 2025 were both 7 game series losses in the Semis
