This angle of Deni making the go ahead layup to put the Blazers up by one with 16 seconds left
Basketball 101. He was watching the defender’s feet
Shook him with the hesi, then waited for that left foot to come back up before blowing by
Pure art. Im currently learning to do this stuff playing my weekly drop-in sessions. Its harder than it looks cause im usually the one to that scores on fast breaks or spot up shooting
Yea no kidding it’s harder than it looks lol
It’s incredibly hard
Yep, that stood out to me during this clip as well.
He’s cold. The moment he saw the defender slide forward , he drove since the momentum of the defender wouldn’t allow him to catch up
They’re not teaching the triple tween blow by in 101 lol that’s 400 level
Jordan Goodwin has forgot more about defense than you’ll ever know. He’s an outstanding defender, Deni just had an outstanding move.
He should be watching where the help defense is at.

Yall stay behind the keyboard
You got intel about him not having peripheral vision like the rest of us?
It’s not that. You look at where the big man is behind the first defender
Elite scorers know they can get by the first man
Well he scored 41 points and dropped 12 dimes his first playoff game ever. Seems elite.
I didn’t say he wasn’t I replied to the original comment saying to watch the defenders feet
What big man? Dillon Brooks was defending the paint who’s shorter than Avdija.
I mean it clearly worked out fine for him lol
Ya but the elite scorers look at where the help in the paint is. They know they can get by the first man
Salty much?
How am I salty lol
We can see your flair nephew.
Ya I got nothing to hide clown
lol you mean Brooks? Who got fouled out on this play?
As a non Blazers fan I was happy for the result but the fact Brooks ate shit on the play was also satisfying.
Ya the second defender. What’s funny? He shouldn’t be looking at the defenders feet
No need to when there’s no big man on the court 🤦♂️
You still gotta see where the second defender is at. They could take a charge
Is that what bub carrington does to average 10 a game
Wow good one! You tryna insult him like that’s me lol
The elite scorers all say they look at the second line of defense but sure use bub
As someone who watches drives, this is a solid drive
Now watch this drive.

Fool me once, sha-shame on you, fool me twice….
Can’t get fooled again
Isn’t the lore on this that there is an unwritten rule in media training to never give the media a sound byte that says “shame on me”?
Possibly. Might just be a saying in Texas.
One of the funniest lines of all time.
Like I get that he didn’t want a clip of him saying “Shame on me” being out there, but his improv here is so much more mememorable.

This guy drives
Thats a G Drive if i’ve ever seen one
Half the people on the live game thread were claiming he didn’t get fouled on this play
Fouled twice tbh
Hit on the head and swiped across the arm. Tbh it would be hard to kind of see it in real time, but that’s definitely a foul, if not two.
That’s why players like Embiid and SGA fall down and stay down. You give the ref time replay the play in their head and call a foul.
You get the most casual fans commenting when there’s only one game on.
This is literally Deni all the time which is why it’s so stupid when people complain about foul baiting when a player gets lots of FTs without taking any context into consideration. Try to find examples of Deni flopping - you won’t find it. He just goes hard at the basket constantly and guys foul him. I get people hate watching FTs but if they’re happening because an offensive player is repeatedly beating his man to the spot and the defender is choosing to foul instead of getting out of the way, that is simply a fundamental part of the game of basketball. If you’re gonna be mad at one of the players involved because they’re making you watch FTs, it makes a lot more sense to complain that the defenders won’t stop fouling than to complain that the offensive player had the audacity to drive to the rim
Box score watchers will just see 10 FTs and assume that Deni is on some Trae Young bullshit and head straight to r/nba to bitch about it though
The only thing that people really see is him complaining to the refs. I’m pretty positive people aren’t really watching blazers games very often respectfully. So when the clips that get posted are negative, that will be the general reception.
I have tried to watch a couple games from every non tanking team, and I think he probably does whine a little much, but so do plenty of players. I don’t think he’s better or worse about it than the rest of the league. I think he’s got the same perception of soft calls like Shai. The reality is a lot of it is he just drives hella often, so he gets extra calls more often as well.
If they’re watching our games they’re usually rooting against us too. Half our fans want us to blatantly tank.
Those “fans” are absolute clowns. Woke up this morning on our sub to see another “dur trade Deni now his value is record high” shit.
I mean, I wanted to tank this year, the draft class looks insane. But I won’t be upset with playoff basketball. And I can’t imagine the haul we would get for Deni, with how good he is and how much he is improving, plus his contract, it would be crazy. But I don’t want to trade him, he is great, unless it’s something that would change the trajectory of the franchise (not for Giannis).
Goodwins I’m fine to say “playoff basketball” or whatever.
2nd one he gets hit in the head… clear foul lol
I’m willing to admit that he definitely does some foul baiting, which is frustrating, but he also legitimately gets fouled a lot. Anyone who drives to the basket as much as he does will.
But even when he’s playing to contract (which he does a ton), he’s almost always doing so while going straight at the hoop and making a legitimate attempt to make the shot (which he usually does make, hence the extremely high number of and-1s).
It’s a fundamentally different approach than the guys like SGA or Harden who are constantly lurching awkwardly at defenders that are not even between them and the hoop and them orb launching themselves away from the hoop to create the illusion of more contact than really happened.
With Deni, the contact is almost always real. If there’s no contact he just takes the layup without trying to create a phantom foul. The biggest controversy on Deni fouls is usually whether it’s an offensive or defensive foul, not whether there was a foul at all.
live it wasnt super clear, watching this replay i was like, oh yeah theres the foul huh
FOuL bAItEr /s
Man had a mission and was going all the way
[removed]
holy fuck
I like him now but i have a feeling im gonna hate this dude in a couple of weeks
Yeah, he will drive into Wemby a lot. Crush into him and try to get him in foul trouble. There will be questionable calls and he will recieve hate because he crushes into defenders himself.
He will look like an idiot getting owned by Wemby. But that guys is relentless. He might get blocked 10 times, but if he manage to get fouled by wemby 3-4 times, thats good enough.
I hope to see they take game or two.
Yup, honestly brooks was doing decent defending him, seemed like Deni was only gonna get 20 or points in the game, the brooks got into foul trouble and deni took over. Deni gets to the line by going hard, but he also gets defenders scared of fouling out
Brooks is the perfect type of defender to match up with a player like Deni.
That might be a blue print for other teams to deal with Wemby. Just drive into him, get blocked, but draw enough fouls to get him into trouble.
I’ve never understood why teams don’t super focus on fouling out the other team’s star more often. Basketball is like the only sport where you can literally disqualify the other teams best player from the game, yet I never feel like it gets exploited enough, especially for big men
He had probably his second best game ever behind this one against you guys earlier this season
Wemby didn’t play against y’all this entire season. It’ll be interesting to see how the matchup changes. Usually teams beat us by launching 3s so I like the matchup against a poor shooting team like Portland.
Portland is going to go through some nasty cold stretches against y’all with wemby playing 35+ minutes at playoff intensity. They will probably slow your offense down at times but it won’t matter. Sweep incoming
I’m gonna consider it a success if we peel one game off of them lol. That Spurs team is monstrous.
Yep. A sweep would be disappointing. Winning one game would be the expectation. And stealing 2 (and getting a 3rd home game) would be absolutely awesome for this team and fanbase. Anything beyond that is probably a pipe dream.
Gonna be a lot of kick outs for Portland to brick threes. Only way they have a shot is if Toumani, Jerami Grant, and Jrue go unconscious from behind the arc.
Which has happened a lot more over the last few weeks than it has most of the season.
Especially for Toumani, who has had both an 8 and 9 3PM game over that timespan (as well as a 6 and a few 4s). Definitely wouldn’t be surprised if he hits 4+ in a couple of the games, and at least plausible he has a 6+ game.
Jrue and Grant are also more than capable of getting hot from 3 for multiple games in a row.
IMO, the bigger concern is whether we can keep turnovers low enough that we can let a warm (but not scorching hot) 3 point shooting night carry us to victory. If we can manage to keep our turnovers under 15, I think we’ll have a real chance. I also don’t think they’ll be able to do that.
Our perimeter defenders, especially Castle, are really really talented when it comes to navigating screens. We have gotten a lot better over the course of the year vs shooting teams imo. The biggest threat I think are teams like the cavs, Knicks, or thunder – teams that have dudes who can find that sweet spot to score over wemby in the midrange and be efficient with it.
Beware of Denver. Jokic just has the weight advantage to move Wemby.
smh running from the grind /s
If you squint your eyes, he’s like a dollar store mix between Giannis and Luka. He’s a good player, but I don’t think he’s getting past Wemby. The Blazers are good enough to get a game, maybe 2, but Wemby will be the best player on the floor and the Spurs will also have the better team and the better coach. It’s over with.
Honestly, the Spurs should be happy they ended up with the Blazers. They don’t have to deal with Booker and Green from the Suns, and because the Clippers and Warriors weren’t able to climb any higher, they don’t have to worry about playoff Kawhi or Steph. If Deni is the biggest threat your team needs to deal with, I’d be happy with that.
Honestly, I think he plays more like late 30s LeBron.
I liked seeing the Portland bench behind him, the anxiety they had, great shot.
Bro just wanted it more
Built different
We’re in a basketball sub after 2 great playin games take that shit somewhere else. A dude playing basketball has nothing to do with tragedies around the world

GO OUTSIDE. No need to bring your antisemitism here
Edit:
Since /u/anonymousbystander7 deleted his comment, it said
“Wanted to tear apart an 18 year old Palestinian girl more”
Imagining commenting this on a clip about a guy who is playing basketball
Pure determination. Tough.
That 4th quarter was way tighter than the final result makes it look.
True, Grant had that meaningless dunk at the very end
Definitely wasn’t meaningless. If he got fouled, that leaves the possibility of missing free throws and, suddenly, its still a one possession game.
Yeah, it 100% iced the game, aside from some miraculous full-court heave going in with a shooting foul tacked on.
people will look at this and deadass say it wasnt a foul
It’s absolutely wild lol.
As a Wizards fan I used to tell people this kid was going to be a problem but everyone laughed…
I think this kid is going to be a problem!
Ha ha ha you’re kidding right? /s
Wizards 🤦🏾
I always thought Deni was tough and I could never understand why they never let him have the offense. They were trying to force him to be a role player.
Dude just flys in there like an unexpected missile.
Do we start calling Wemby Iron Dome if he blocks him enough?
Wemby has the right to defend himself
Honed in on that basket like a drone target.
Bars
Why is this so satisfying
I’m still annoyed he got called for an offensive foul on the breakaway. The refs last night in both games had some…moments. He was a hair away from getting tossed too when he let a ref have it. I was surprised he didn’t get T’d up.
How impressive is his development. Sheesh. Did not see it coming.
You could see it in his eyes. What a demon.
What he can do, at his size, is pretty special.
Ayo
Shit was beautiful. Made me make the stink face in the moment.
I was really impressed with Deni last night. I watched a few games this year where shooting fouls that were highly questionable went his way and not called on the other end. But that was not the case last night, save for maybe 1 or 2. Dude was on a mission, and most of the calls he got last night were legitimate fouls after seeing the replay like this one here
That’s a tough bucket.
Tough bucket 😤
My favorite parts of this is that I don’t think we’ve ever seen a guy built like this who can also move this way. On top of the fact, he made ZERO attempts to push the defense off of him. Something you NEVER see another superstar do. They all (MJ, Kobe, and LeBron) make at least 2-3 brush-off moves on the way to the basket. He just drives and takes the contact like a Disney character.
How do you not send 2 at this man in this situation?
According to this sub instead of an elite driving game he instead just runs into people and somehow gets the whistle completely in his favor
Deni is tough. I thought he’d be nice when he was drafted. Glad to see it working out in Portland. Look out for them is Dame is still Dame next season. 👀
Actual bag work is always beautiful. Breaking you down to get the shot I want
Glad we put a guard on the tall man who was killing us all night.
Bro what the hell is jordan goodwin doing on deni
That was tough
Carry job, put the whole team on his back
i thought he carried the ball and walked with it, but it was his team he was carrying all along. deep.
And1
Goodwin’s commitment right before the drive has me baffled
Finished thru mad contact. Lotta grip!
Double foul
Legitimately carried Portland tonight. The offense looked awful with him off the floor at least until mid 4 quarter when they finally started hitting threes
Absolutely beautiful read by Deni
cone drill
He makes some crazy faces
LOL at the nephews in the game thread crying that he wasn’t fouled.
Suns had no answer for him. Dude was unstoppable all night
Guy knows how to settle into a space
Looking like Andy Sandberg
fun game!
Had Goodwin on skates! 2 fouls going to the basket!
At first I thought he released the ball a touch too early but saw him get hit in the head. Itd be hard as fuck to catch it in real time.
It’s still crazy to me that people argue he shouldn’t have been an All-Star. What a game and what a season!
This goes hard af though ngl
Good for DietLuka
Always fun to see stuff like this. Look at what hes watching, stays locked on the feet and doesnt make a move until the defenders left leg is in a forward moving motion meaning he knows at that second running by will cause the defender to be a step behind and unable to put his body infront of him during the drive to his left.
Basketball 101 but takes a lot notice that and pull it off in the moment
I don’t have a dog in this fight and I’m probably wrong anyway but is he traveling? I counted 3 steps after his dribble
Nah. He gathers and takes two steps and gets up to the hoop. You don’t count the gather step.
In the NBA, the “gather step” (or step zero) is not counted as one of the two allowable steps a player can take after ending their dribble. The step taken while the ball is being gathered—when a foot is on the ground, or lands, as the player secures the ball—is considered “step zero”.
Gotcha I thought it might have been a gather step but thought it didn’t apply to layups thanks
I like that he didn’t need to travel or offensive foul to make space
That initial lunge really got him the separation. All those other dribbles were waiting for Goodwin to recover and press up so he blow past him. If he wanted he could’ve taken the shot but was determined to get to the rim. Pretty cool stuff. Suns should’ve sent another man.
Brooks awful help there was a great example of how not to help
Free Palestine
Travel…. my lord
Is this the first clip of NBA basketball you’ve seen in 20 years?
Where?
Very smart, looking for contact
Man these slowed down phantom cam angles just highlight how no one gives a shit about carries anymore.
Thr amount of carrying that takes place in the league is attocious
Right? He took 4 steps and changed direction twice in one “dribble”
Old man yells at clouds and such, but that should be a textbook travel. Clearly gathering on the 3rd step
Current NBA rules are so offensively oriented that it’s kinda ridiculous if you grew up with a different game
I mean yes the current travel rules are whack but no this was not a travel in any league
damn I’d love for LaMelo to get this dudes whistle
did you miss the part where he got smacked on the head?
Yeah, I wish LaMelo got calls for that
LeMelo could have gotten call like this, but he chose to take 16 3pt shots instead of attacking a Bam less Miami team.
Fouls come from choices, LeMelo needs to learn to make better ones.
Fell in love with his game last night, first I’ve seen of him all season. Shame he’s a nationalist
Shame that you need to make everything in your life political.
America is worse than Israel
I’m American but I wouldn’t disagree
Guess you expected me to respond nationalistically after just criticizing it?
Oh that’s a constant, that disappointment you feel when you figure out what’s going on between a meathead’s ears. They are not paragons of thought and they have very little in common with us. I’d guess the vast majority of nba players hold very conservative beliefs because their handlers are money people.
My god you people are mentally ill. How dare someone be proud of their heritage.
They don’t like when Jews do it
Being proud of your heritage does not have to mean you are silent while your country engages in the mass slaughter of innocents, and call your critics “uneducated”. As a Jew myself, it’s totally fair to criticize Deni for his stance on his home country
How is it mentally ill to point out a fact? Sounds like you need to turn that expert medical diagnosis on your own brain bozo 😂
Surely your favorite player has better political beliefs
No shit, Jokic wants to gas kosovo. Thank you for agreeing with my statement I guess?
And people on r/nba saying he was getting phantom calls all game. Dude is on a tier of his own on foul baiting, but he legitimately gets fouled a ton.
bro what? you are really saying deni is in a tier of his own foul baiting? he drives as much as anybody, that’s not foulbaiting. you literally have SGA
So many people think if you’re getting too many fouls you’re foul baiting. But when someone is driving down the lane and they’re impossible to stop, they’re going to get fouled.
Deni gets more free throws on less shots
because he drives more than nearly everyone and he’s too big and fast to guard on the drive without fouling. he literally looked like prime bron driving last night getting hit every play
I didn’t mean it in a bad way. All the great scorers find ways to get to the line and Deni is maybe a top 15 player this year
gotcha, typically that statement would be meant in a negative way. I just don’t think deni foul baits, I think he sells fouls really well but there’s a distinction because he is going for a bucket every play as opposed to some less ethical alternatives
A foul is a foul. Wade and Kobe invented the modern midrange shot foul baiting tactics defenders have to stay disciplined
Not even nearly everyone. Everyone
He drives the most of anyone in the NBA. By a lot
I don’t have the stats nor did I care to look it up. He clearly passes the eye test and that’s good enough for me
Not really by a lot. Hes practically tied with Brown and a little above SGA who has dipped. But as you’ll find out soon doesn’t matter, ppl will call him a foul baiter the same as they did Shai even when he was actually leading the league in drives by a lot.
Yeah looks like he dropped after his back injury, which isn’t surprising
He was at nearly 21 a game last time I looked
You’re right for the most part, but I don’t think he’s a tier of his own. Luka and Harden exist. Also let’s not act like Phoenix is a disciplined defensive team… they foul a ton. Bottom 10 in fouls per game.
