I think Mitchell thought there was less time than there was. There was enough time to look up and see Larsson wide open and hit that pass. You’re right that it was a simple pass that would lead to an open shot, but the way Mitchell took that contested layup it seemed like he thought there was 3 seconds on the clock, not 4.7 seconds. The ball leaves his hands at 1.5 seconds.
I think Spoelstra drew a play to not take a time-out and get Mitchell the final shot and Mitchell tunnel-visioned it. Objectively he should have passed it but they’re probably exhausted so it’s brain off, go mode.
