This might be a hot take but I don’t even think it’d be a bad hire honestly. Obviously Doc has his faults, but he’s a great regular season coach and has a good track record of over performing with teams that have a talent deficit.

The troubles with Doc arise in the playoffs when his weaknesses come to light. He makes sense for a roster that is younger, not expected to contend, and is just looking to learn how to win games in the regular season imo.

I hate Doc as much as the next guy. And I think the 6ers and the Bucks were idiots for hiring him, he was a terrible choice for where those teams were and what they were tryna do. But give him a team like the Heart and Hustle Magic or the 2019 Clippers and he’ll do well imo

And as someone who always felt he was a good not great coach that was completely overrated his entire career, I’m not necessarily mad at it. But like, I don’t think he’s nearly as bad of a coach as people will tell you now, he has his strengths. He’s just not great.

The 2019 Clippers when he finished with a 48-34 record with zero all stars and pushed the KD Warriors to 6 games even after trading Tobias Harris our leading scorer.

He did pretty well keeping the 6ers afloat when Embiid missed games too imo, they finished above regular season projections every year he was there and Doc had an above .500 record without Embiid.

Again, I don’t like Doc, I feel a bit queasy even writing these comments lol

It was a horrible move for a team that’s good and stays mostly healthy. For a bad team who’s best players are Zion and Dejounte Murray who are both hurt 75% of the time it was a trade that should have never even been considered, and I say that as someone who really liked Derik Queen as a prospect.

I’m not debating he isn’t good at getting a team from mid to competitive. There’s just been a track record of him playing entirely through his star, to the point the star is exhausted, or worse. I would definitely let him develop Queen and Fears. I just would shorten the leash once/if the Pelicans are a 50+ win team.

As a UConn fan, I kinda thought he would do better as an NBA coach. Both LeBron and KD have spoken really fondly of him for taking them under his wing when they were rookies and helping teach them how to be professionals and not let the lifestyle ruin them. Great motivator too.

Ollie’s flaws were recruiting and player development, but he won’t need to build a roster and he can lean on many other coaches to help with development. Plus a lot of his issues stemmed from him going through a really messy divorce, and I assume that shouldn’t happen to him again.
