Yeah and it was definitely an upgrade. Getting 2.5 rotation players (LaRavia started hot and fell off) who are mostly younger and didn’t demand a long term deal for a “3 and D” guy who has been getting more injured and worse at shooting every year was totally worth it. Not enough to fix our problems but certainly a huge improvement.

The Rockets didn’t need more him, let alone an older injury prone guy who probably demanded a long term deal; smart for him and his agent, terrible deal for them. Now they’re stuck with him for a hot sec and probably won’t be able to offload his contract. They just don’t have any players as of now who will get them to be serious in the West - KD is old and not clutch, Sengun is a terrible shooter, FVV injured and taking up a ton of space, DFS injured, Amen can’t shoot for shit, etc.

It’s not even behind the scenes. He had a relatively recent history of it. A lot of people had (rightfully so) mentioned that we have had older rosters with guys past their prime. Every team needs a solid 3 and D guy but he had fallen off in both of those regards in the last few years and been injured a decent amount - it did not make sense to lock up cap space for an injury prone, downward trending 3 and D guy.

We need(ed) younger rotation guys who fit Luka’s timeline, and locking down an aging DFS in for 3-4 years on that contract was not a good move.

He’s mediocre. His big W’s come from his connections, in my opinion. No other GM gets Luka I think. However, smart GM’s wouldn’t have overpaid for AD or traded for Russ. But if we don’t make the Russ trade, we don’t eventually ship Russ and D’Lo out for Rui, Vando etc which saved that season. It’s a little difficult to properly or fairly judge Pelinka because he has some massive W’s, but also just some feckless and disastrous leadership, too.

I think most GM would have snapped Nico’s hand and agreed with the trade immediately when offered were they in Pelinka’s position.

But what Pelinka did exceptionally was to minimize the amount of assets Lakers had to give. Imagine being offered Luka and had the confidence to say i think what you are asking is too much. And pulled it off.

DFS was washed already that year he was traded for Kyrie. The heavy minutes on that WCF run really did a number on him and Reggie. His corner 3 ball wasn’t as automatic as I hoped, and his defense was a step slower. That’s on top of being kinda average on those areas to begin with and his complete inability to do anything else.

That’s why I thought Lakers were kind of caught in a rock and a hard place. Do they resign him and commit long term money to a guy with an easily replaceable skill set and getting up there on age? Or is it sunk cost to waste many assets on a rental? Pelinka cooked on this one.
