Wemby on the 65 Game Rule
Dude’s trying to act like he has to think about the math to prove he’s from this planet.
Like in the Incredibles where they have to coach Dash into taking 2nd place.
Wemby’s doing that with MVP this season
He took second??
This has to be the first time an NBA player turned an answer into a Q&A with some math.

Prof W for thr win.
his response should be considered a normal one… ideally. he approached it with logic and open-mindedness without pretending to know all the answers. unfortunately this type of response is considered unusual for most people
This means you care about what you’re answering, so often the reporter drops the ball before the player even speaks because of their garbage question
The reporter doesn’t want a well thought out response though. The reporter wants a one-liner that’s clickbait-y in nature. That’s what generates them the most clicks.
Wemby calling the 65 game rule a “pile of dicks” would get more clicks than his nuance here. That’s why reporters ask questions in ways targeted at getting players to default into one liners.
yeah that’s not how reporting works at all.
reporters ask targeted questions to get a specific response because that’s the easiest way to incorporate a player’s quote into a story without having to mess around with the quote using a square bracketed ellipsis […] or other punctuation. a specific response is a clean and easy quote.
you also misunderstand click bait. the idea isn’t to get people to click lots, it’s to get them to click and then stay on the page. and reporters don’t need a quote to do that - they can just paraphrase for the headline.
for example, using your comment, i could write the headline “Hopsalong says reporters don’t like Wemby’s nuance - they want to generate traffic”. i don’t need any quotes from you there, because i get the idea across and people will click on that to find out what wemby’s nuance is and why reporters don’t like it.

The Big Short
I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a player involve the press the way he did there. Then all the mental math… this is one of the most unique post game pressers I’ve ever seen haha
That’s why he’s the new face of the league, whether people agree or not. He demands attention because of his play and him being a complete physical anomaly, but also because of his personality and the way that people listen to him. He wants players to put effort into the all-star game, and all of sudden players are doing it. He says defense should be considered more for MVP, and suddenly the media is talking about defense. He’s just got the it factor, that’s not something that can be cultivated, it just happens
Alien-Man of the people
I mean, it makes sense. Aliens have studied our ways and have sent wemby to take control of the planet.
Very strong Superman vibes
I was a fan after seeing how he composes himself that first year, as a kid among men.
The fact that we had the media pushing Ant so hard to be a face just because he’s american is crazy to me when international players have dominated the game for almost a decade now
Ant is easily top 5 most charismatic star in the league. It’s not some conspiracy
Agree I have not seen anyone in any fanbase who doesn’t like Ant
you’re right & i love watching him play but he’s nowhere near the top players. Its Sga jokic wemby luka and giannis if he’s ever healthy again. He’s just not on their level
Ant absolutely has the It factor. It’s just the opposite side of the coin to Wemby, id vs ego
This is very accurate. Whether you think his play deserves MVP consideration (I do), he is just commanding attention all year long. This guy just impacts the league.
He seems to answer every question he’s asked very thoughtfully. It’s not just PR quick response. He’s clearly a very smart dude.
He understood the assignment of trying to make up for every stupid thing Gobert has done or said.
But don’t forget that just a few weeks ago Wemby also answered “Why do you think you deserve to be the MVP?” very thoughtfully in the exact same “being asked a direct question by the media post-game” situation and the fact that he did so without giving some canned PR response that fans claim to hate makes him a typically arrogant Frenchman.
I remember when people were clowning him for Carrying Sanderson books around with him. Those books are so thick they still look big in his hands. The guy is an intellectual who happens to have god given size and talent to maximize. He’s the new Kareem.
Seems like a super down to earth dude. Stardom hasn’t tainted him at all.
Statistically speaking, he’s one of the least down to Earth people to have ever lived.
He’s pretty down to earth for a man from another planet
Of the Spursdroids, Kawhi was the the first to impact press involvement in his answers.
Unfortunately he went rogue due to his programming.
People think he begged for his MVP or whatever. He’s just really great interacting with the press and wants to build chemistry with them by answering their questions.
Jordan showed us the value of that relationship
Yeah he is just a thoughtful guy who likes to talk about stuff.
In another life, this guy would be a motivational speaker. His charisma and eloquence is off the charts.
But instead I guess he has to settle for being possibly the most physically gifted basketball player ever
Wemby made it to elite company when fans now glazing (me) his math skills.
It’s basically him and Tim Duncan. Like when Duncan offered to do taxes for the entire team, or when he called out the geometric angle needed to make a bank shot, or even when he delivered a heartfelt speech on fiscal responsibility during a victory celebration.
Didn’t he get scammed for millions ?
No amount of inteligence will protect you from a hoe you married and an asshole you hired as an agent for years.
Duncan made the mistake on who to marry and who to hire as an agent, but it wasnt evident until after 10+ years of it. Hardly something anyone can foresee.
Yeah and so did Ballmer with those terrible terrible people from Aspiration who acted alone in their treacherous ways.
They down right swindled him! HOODWINKED!
He lost $20 million
Tim getting scammed isn’t canon.
I’m usually good with sarcasm…but the more articles you shared the more you got me worried…do you get all your news from the Onion? If so, I’d love to hear more about your world view.
Sorry, are you trying tell me that Tim Duncan did not in fact say “C’mon, guys, just a couple days left in the regular season, and you know what that means—get your W-2s to me as soon as you can, plus records of any memorabilia sales or shoe endorsements you’ve done, and just as important, tell me about any deductible expenses you’ve incurred” during a time out in the 4th quarter of a game?

This is just how nerds think
I’m a nerd and I don’t think I’d be able to calculate 82 * 0.75 that fast.
Eh it’s not that bad, just do 3⁄4 of 80 first which is easy, it’s 60. Then you add in 1.5 for the extra two games. Fuck I might be a nerd
funny how different people approach this.
I was thinking 82 * 0.5 = 41
41 * 0.5 = 20.5
41 + 20.5 = 61.5
I did it differently.
80 * .75 = 60
2 * .75 = 1.5
60 + 1.5 = 61.5
That’s how I’d do it but I’m getting away from youth and these things don’t flow that fast in my head anymore unless I get a full 8 hours of sleep. Which hasn’t happened for, like, four years.

Maxime Reynaud is Victor’s best friend and chess buddy. Reynaud has a double major in Mathematics and Computer Science from Stanford. That’s who Vic hung out with for years lol. Now Max is also the best young player in Sacramento and will probably make All Rookie.
CS job market so hard it’s easier to get into the NBA 😭
We are very excited about Max, now if we could just lose this game (up 109-106 with 3m to go)!
Edit: also did not know about Max’s educational accomplishments or his ties to Wemby, thank you good sir!
Also Wemby is him.
Hope you guys land a sick draft pick, I remember how crazy the arena was during the Webber bibby days and your recent playoff run the fans were just as hyped. Sacramento deserves a good team
Raynaud went to Henry 4 and got his baccalaureat scientifique (high school final degree) with the very high honors (“très bien”). It’s hard to explain to someone not french… but this is truly impressive scholar achievements for a teenager! Source: I am a scientist doing fundamental research and I got nowhere close to this guy when I was his age. Maxime is definitely in the 0.1% of the population when it comes to intelligence.
Now, unless I’m mistaken - and it does not diminish his accomplishments in the slightest - I think that he joined Henri-IV not necessarily on merit, but because his parents lived in Paris and there is a non-zero chance it simply was his “lycée de secteur”, basically the high school he would join as a default because it is the closest to his home.
If you live in the 5e Arrondissement, it is either that or the equally prestigious Louis-Le-Grand.
I actually don’t know if he got in before or after Affelnet started with student selection. But anyway, H4 is never a bad thing to have on your CV… particularly if you come out of it with a BAC S mention TB! I have to admit, this + being an Athlete good enough for the NBA, what a guy.
Still can’t believe the Spurs didn’t draft Raynaud… but hey why make the obvious smart move when you can just bring back Bismack Biyombo who has one of the five worst +/- for his career in NBA history.
Maxime and his agent had control over where he wanted to get drafted. Spurs tried hard but negotiations tried hard and Wemby was with him in Paris during the draft convincing him to play in SA but Maxime wanted guaranteed money and solidified playing time/role early on.
Speaking as a Frenchman, Maxime was right. He made a good bet on himself.
Yeah he wouldn’t have seen the floor much in San Antonio. It’s already something of a happy accident for him that Sabonis got injured so much to give him game time, but behind Wemby and Kornet he would not have had the same rookie campaign he just had.
Raynaud as an unproven rookie in the same roster as the Alien and a super reliable Kornet?
He would have gotten 3-4 minutes of garbage time here and there, all the displays of his strengths would have been brushed off as “only works cause against G-league players”, and he would have been out of the league 2 years later.
Getting drafted in Sacramento and the Sobonis injury have been an absolute blessing for him.
Don’t hate on Biz, he’s an awesome vet to have around young guys, great teammate to have
at stanford
Probably less than 5% of NBA players could get 35*50 off the dome that quickly
5 players is probably a better estimate than 5% of the NBA
Isn’t that the same thing?
That isn’t the best one. I’d say 75% of 82 is better. 35*50 can be easily done by 35⁄2*100=17.5*100=1750. For 75% of 82, it’s 82-82⁄4 (easiest way in my eyes), so 82-20.5=61.5. Second is a bit harder.
Everyone’s mental math is different, but for me 75% of 82 is a bit easier because I go 82⁄2 for 50% then half of that for the other 25%. So 41+20.5
Yep same here
You can hear him mutter “20.5” which is 25% of 82 and then he just multiplies from there.
Basically 75% of 80 is 60
Then 75% of 2 is around 1.something
!(Something = 5)!<
all y’all got skills. here’s me, trying to unlock my phone with a fingerprint to get the calc app
Not a Fermi problem but the same idea
For 75% of 82, I’d first go to 50% which is 41, then add half of that which is 20.5, getting to the 61.5.
For 75% I just break it down to 3⁄4 of 80 then 2
Probably less than 5% of NBA players could get 35*50 off the dome
Shit I have a bachelors degree with a minor in mathematics and I couldn’t do it that fast
I can do it, but if you put me on the spot I start second guessing and trying to go to fast… It’s wild confidence to just start doing it in front of cameras like that. Maxed out mental and emotional maturity.
Not taking away from anything but it wouldn’t surprise me if he thought about this before so knows the figures ahead of time, even vaguely.
This is the sort of thing I would do: I’d done the maths beforehand, but talk as if it’s being done fresh.
I love how he always gives thoughtful answers for all the questions man he’s so great for the league
Then when he answers a reporter’s question about why he should be the MVP, and he gives his honest, thoughtful, valid opinion, people in the sub say Vic is “begging for an award”
MVP he can do math
My goat got everyday people talking about and caring about math in the comment section. My Face of the league
This is why he is the next face of the league.

lol Wemby like “let me turn it on YOU reporters! Uno reverso!”
It’s crazy we have a 7’6 player that has great handles, can shoot the 3, is genuinely a smart ass mf, who will fucking die for this game. God I love wemby
Literally once in a one life time player and person we will never see another wemby like player.
Wemby is awesome. He articulates his point well and thinks through it, whilst involving the media in front of him and getting ideas. I think there should be a threshold, but it should be games or minutes. If someone plays 62 games as said above, or say 1700 minutes or whatever you wanna calculate it as, they should be eligible. He’s right, Cade and Luka have given so much in minutes and impact, just haven’t reached the game limit.
That would be a better compromise. Personally I think there shouldn’t be a threshold. Just let voters decide and encourage them to consider games played in their decision.
For the league it’s not about that though. It’s just about creating an incentive for star players to play in more games to make the product better.
Kareem is smiling somewhere.
Dude really is a unicorn lol
I legit thought I’d find this guy annoying as hell after all the hype, but here I am now watching his fucking post game interview going ‘Wow. Very insightful…’
One of one type of player honestly - and I don’t say that lightly
Meet the future Nbapa rep.
Well after CJ and Grant Williams, they can use an upgrade in the CBA talks.
I’m sure that year with CP3 was insightful
Wemby is the only person in that room who can do math in his head.
He seriously is wise for his age. Seeks other opinions, sees the rationale behind each response.
[removed]
We’re glazing here man
Because clowning on sports press/reporters is one of the most popular things to do around here
I have zero problems with it when people on reddit call athletes dumb all day without knowing them. The label should be arbitrarily put on others every once in a while too.
No not just wise for his age, he’s smart. His parents made sure he was well educated and it shows
You don’t know that lol
Been loving all post game interviews of Wemby this season (along with the rest of the spurs players and Johnson too)
Damn he’s faster than me.
Embiid hopefully won’t play again, so I’d say the 65 game rule has served its purpose and it’s time to put it away
A true hater, respect
Hopefully is wild
F this type of behavior.
Wemby is one of the few athletics that sounds intelligent, poised and well spoken. Plus he rarely deflects questions asked. He will address them head on. This is why I tune in to all his interviews and press cons. Listening to him speak makes me feel like I can learn something new everytime.
He can do math quick. Previously he converted feet and inches to centimetres at the snap of the fingers.
solving 75% of 82 in your head within a couple seconds while talking in a press conference is actually amazing. And this isnt someone who is involved in the math field its an NBA player. I am pretty good at math and it just took me about 10 seconds to solve that by talking through it (75% of 80 is 60, then add 75% of 2 which is 1.5)
If we had a mathematics competition amongst the MVP candidates, I’ll take Wemby.
I’ll take Max Raynaud, but I am fairly sure any of the two would clear the rest of the NBA by a significant margin.
SGA could never, he’s probably thinking about what dead animal to rock at the next post game presser
after he thinks how many times he would flop
2100 seems like a good minutes total for me.
Only play 50 games? Gotta play 42 mpg to make it.
Play in 62 games? Gotta play 34mpg
Play in 70? Gotta play 30mpg.
Maybe a lower total, but I think minutes limit makes more sense than a game total.
The idea with game total is that as a fan you are more likely to see your favorite players actually play in the game, even if it is for a little bit less time
I think there are push and pulls with everything
Should be either tbh. 65 games at 20 MPG or whatever arbitrary minute limit.
Wemby just wanted to flex his math skills loll
Prof Wemby out here teaching us
We have a new Big Aristotle
I love this dude. His intelligence plus being just a great baller gives me Kareem vibes
This lowkey reminded me of the Stanley Tucci “bridge” scene in Margin Call IYKYK
Victor von Doom
If we just switched it to minutes instead of games… 30/game for 65 is 1950…
Cade Cunningham 62 games, but 2121 minutes
Luka Doncic 64 games, but 2289 minutes
I get that they may not want to completely abandon the idea, but maybe that’s an easy stepping stone towards the right solution.
El Professor, a new nickname
I need all the MVP candidates to get asked math questions.
He did the math.
Can someone explain to someone who isn’t too familiar with the topic?
Basically in recent years (some say Pop started it back in the big 3 era, but it’s gotten worse lately) a lot of guys will take games off to rest when they’re not actually injured. Maybe they’re a little banged up, or just old like Bron, but they are absolutely physically capable of playing, but don’t for whatever reason.
There’s the side of guys wanting to be as close to 100% as possible for the playoffs, or on the opposite side of the spectrum, guys on tanking teams who have nothing to really play for. But in the end, fans want to see superstars and it sucks to only make it to 1 game a year and your favorite player is just sitting out because they would rather try to win the next game.
So the league finally put a minimum games threshold of 65 games in place for players to be eligible for post season awards. And contracts are often tied directly to these types of things, so you can be damn sure that guys will play at least 65 games when they can.
But what Vic brings up in the video is a couple of guys who had absolutely incredible seasons and got hurt and will end up not qualifying by just a game or 2. So it’s kinda shitty to say that this dude who maybe was an MVP runner-up played 64 games, but won’t even make an All League team, while another guy, who was maybe closer to the 8th best player in the league will now be on the First Team All League.
Edit damn I typed way more than I meant to, I hope you weren’t talking about something completely different
Thank you. I really appreciate this summary.
I’ve recently switched from watching a ton of NFL and got tapped out. I have been loving watching the NBA random games and following my team. It feels like being a kid again watching ESPN sportscenter top 10 plays before school. But the highlights are here with friendly people to comment just for the love of the game and community.
You are great.
Great summary big dawg
Damn this mfer go to MIT too??
I always hated math. Now I want to study it. Victor Wembanyama ladies and gentlemen.
my man is out there just dazzling with mental math
Wonder who the NBA is going to try and market as the face of the NBA, this guy, or Ja Morant. Such a hard decision tbh.
It’s not a great look for American education when we are impressed by simple mental math being done
My favorite thing about Wemby is just how damn smart he is.
Bro is genuinely an alien
Damn…. I’m okay with wemby being the face of the nba. How can you hate this guy.
What he said about now the awards don’t reflect the season is what does it for me. This rule compromises the awards and that’s a terrible thing in my opinion. It would take a tremendous amount of upside to make it worth it, and that isn’t happening because of this rule.
Dawg the glaze here is hilarious, and I like Wemby.
I think the 2 grizz players that played the full 48 minutes tonight should also qualify for some type of awards
Dude giving this response in a language that’s not his first
r/nba so flustered that he didn’t agree with their opinion that the limit sucks that all they can comment on is his mental mathematics abilities lol
Now show me LaMelo ball doing those calculations
I think a good adjustment to the rule would be to change the requirement based on their point average. Something like this:
30ppg: 55 games to qualify
25ppg: 60 games to qualify
20ppg: 65 games to qualify
Everyone else: 70 games to qualify
If we applied the rule this year, Luka, Cade, and Ant would all make it now and guys who missed way too much time to begin with like Steph and Giannis would remain ineligible.
Kind of a win/win for people who both like and hate the rule. People who hate it will see the requirement laxed for top scorers in the league, people who like it will see the standard requirement raised to 70
Man, I like Wemby. I hope he becomes the GOAT.
My goat
Should be minutes played or games played
The funniest thing about this video, once you see it, cannot unsee it, is A. His hand hold the mic is ridiculous but B. They way his elbow is cropped out, it almost looks like a prop someone is using off screen to hold the mic up to him
You even have the media praising him for how he handled the question. No doubt the face of the league.
The Big Smarty Pants.
