Nico clearly did not speak with Jason Kidd before signing him. After 20 games of Dlo JKid, a former point guiard, decided that PGs are overrated and that he rather plays with no PG than playing Dlo.
I’ve always thought of D’Lo as an undersized shooting guard, who only nominally plays as a point because he’s actually only just 6’3”, despite being advertised as 6’5” during the draft process and his early years in the NBA.
D’Lo has never been a super-great playmaker for others, and his assist numbers tend to be “volume” assists, that occur because of the sheer amount of touches he has (26.4 USG% and 30.9 AST% for his career, peaking at 31.9 USG% and 41.3 AST% in his only All-Star season in 2018-19), rather than because he’s actively great at running the point and setting up his teammates.

I just wanna say he’s actually a terrific playmaker just not at the NBA level because his lack of athleticism and quickness don’t really allow him to get by people and collapse the defense to create play making opportunities. He was amazing in college when the athletic playing field was more level but as he transitioned and there was more tape on him it was kind of a wrap. He does legitimately have good vision though.

He didn’t fall off the cliff. His usage never needed to match that again, so he didn’t evolve. There was no team (Golden State, MIN or LA) that ever relied on him to that degree again, so that version of him stayed dormant until others sit for long periods and he catches that rhythm. But that rhythm isn’t getting you to a championship, contending, just the playoffs or play in. He’s been a good player, but not great, not amazing, not legendary. He’s a star and has really never learned to truly be a star in a role. He’s not mastered any skill set so at this stage of his career where do you even put him on the court? He’s not a consistent good defender. So he’s not a glue guy. He can’t be your star, that’s been established. At best he can come off the bench and score but he can get streaky. So that depth chart starts to house him behind young players you’d like to see get runs. This is the path a lot of good but not great players deal with if they don’t master a craft.

Marbury would usually average 8-9 assists per game, due to a combination of high usage and lots of minutes, and not because he’s a great playmaker. But teams got better after he left.

Smart move by Kidd though honestly. As much flack as Kidd gets he has identified correctly that playing guys at point guard during developmental phases, even if it means your team losing, is an amazing opportunity for a young player like a Flagg or Giannis.

He got playtime at the start of the season on the Mavs, and then they found out Ryan Nembhard and Brandon Williams were far better and younger so they stopped giving him any minutes.

His skillset is the worst combo for a veteran guard to have. He has zero awareness and gives low effort on defense. He’s also had injuries and lower back issues which took away his speed and messed with his shot. He’s a shell of the player he was just a few years ago. All you need to know is that he used to be the perfect tank commander and now even the Wizards don’t play him.
He lost speed that he couldn’t afford to lose. He was always barely had the speed necessary to play PG in the first place, and even that was only really at a backup level
The Wizards sure could use him and he would help them win against the bottom teams of the NBA.

I like Dlo, but he has not shown anything since the 2023-2024 season that would make me think he’d help them win any games. I don’t even know what happened inbetween that season & the next (aside from playoffs where he was always horrid), but he completely lost any semblance of a shot that he previously had during the regular season.
Broke the (admittedly pretty low) Laker’s single-season 3 point record that season and then he’s pretty much been shooting 30% on 3’s ever since.
They already had the worst record in the league this season prior to the trade deadline, and the 2024-25 Wizards were among the worst teams of all time in terms of SRS as well, so it’s not like they’re only bad because they’re holding out these stars.
