They should care to win to prove they can beat them and also have the thunder and okc have to duke it out in the 2nd round while they get an easy series against the lakers or face the wolves which could pose some issues but I would expect a 4-1 or 4-2 series

Who do you think the Spurs are? The defending champions? If they can knock the Nuggets down to 4th place with a win, they’ll give it their all.

Chalk it up to their inexperience and being young/dumb, but I really don’t think they do at all. Everything they’ve said and done shows that they think they can play with anybody.

I respect the Nuggets more than any other team in the West and I know the “playoffs are a different animal” cliche. But i don’t think a series with them is that much harder than a series against the Rockets, healthy Minny/healthy Lakers. I think we match up pretty well with them actually despite them stealing the last few games. Would be a really fun test for a young San Antonio team.

If this scenario plays out it would involve the lakers and spurs both trying to win - doesn’t really qualify as dodging or worrying about matchups if you just play to win.

Teams that win in the playoffs have health and rest as key factors.

If you’re the Nuggets, getting the 3-seed feels like a death sentence. You’d need to beat a (seemingly healthy) Wolves team that’s far more talented than Houston or LA’s current squads. Then you’d have to get through Wemby. And then waiting for you on the other side is likely a VERY rested OKC.

That’s just not going to work. Dudes get burned out. Someone risks getting injured.

I’m not saying the Lakers would prefer Minnesota over Houston in round 1, though I do think they’d choose that solely to avoid OKC in round 2 if they somehow got past the 1st round.

This is really just a point about how San Antonio coincidentally has a strong incentive to knock Denver off the 3 seed.

While this is good sentiment in a vacuum, I disagree. It is in San Antonio’s interest that as many potential threats (to their path to the championship) as possible are eliminated.

IF the Lakers win out and the Nuggets split (presumably winning against OKC and losing to the Spurs), Lakers get the 3 seed.

And for the Spurs, it has nothing to do with the Lakers winning a series, it’s about forcing the Nuggets and Thunder to kill themselves
