You watch the previous two games where Doug Christie called his UIOLI timeout at almost exactly this time to draw up a play, then realize that Christie called the play he drew up in this game to get McDermott an open three. You also watch the context of the other set of free throws that was going around and realize that they came from an offensive foul while Dylan Cardwell was trying to get rebounding position. And you go wait a second, the Kings have a better record than the Warriors since the ASB. They’re not tanking, they’re just bad.

Draymond made the tanking comments just to get back at Christie (he’s also probably mad that the Kings have a better record since the ASB than the Warriors). Then it got picked up by a bunch of ragebait accounts that posted out-of-context clips of Warriors players shooting free throws. A couple NBA Twitter people retweeted those accounts, including Bill Simmons. That got the attention of producers for the morning shows, who have zero ethics. They got their guys to regurgitate the ragebait tweets. After it was on Get Up, the Greenberg show, the LeBatard show and Dan Patrick, the league had to take some sort of pro forma action for something no one would think twice normally.

To be fair, I also think it’s extremely stupid and potentially confusing how NBA scoreboards define being “in the bonus” to be only after the 5th foul, even though the 5th foul itself gives free throws. A coach definitely should know better from the actual number of fouls, but it’s stupid that scoreboards don’t mark a team as in the bonus when they have 4 team fouls.
