The Celtics desperately wanted AD at the time and would have sent a better package to New Orleans than the Lakers. It was one of several instances where the Celtics almost screwed themselves over with their assets but didn’t and ended up with the core they have now instead.

You know I kind of understand we’re AD is coming from. AD is genuinely the 2nd best player to ever play for the franchise. And yeah you can say he never did anything substantial as far as playoff success goes but that’s par for the course for the franchise. They have won 2 playoff series in the entire existence of the franchise. So yeah personally I think he deserves some kind of acknowledgement for his time there.
The obvious argument is oh he left on bad terms. But personally I feel like the trade was a win win for both parties. At some point AD decided he didn’t want to play for the pelicans anymore. I feel like that’s fair. If he says nothing and plays his final two seasons (2019, 2020) and walks. He loses out on 20 plus million and pelicans get nothing in return. In fact you could argue they wouldn’t even get Zion because after the trade request AD was sitting out the 2nd half of games for a good part of 2019. You can look at the the return they got for AD as eh now but at the time it looked like they got a jump start a rebuild.
