Because injuries are baked into it already. That’s why it’s 65 games and not 82 games, they’re already accounting for the fact that players can miss a handful of games due to legitimate injury.

In any case, Luka has only applied for the exception. There’s no guarantee he gets it. It’s up to the league’s discretion, and they could very well reject it.

The point is that injuries don’t count as exceptions, it’s supposed to be baked into the thing. Otherwise it would negate the rules entirely, since players could just miss any number of games and claim it was injury related.

Kind of. If a player plays 62 games and fails to make the 65 games due to a season-ending injury, they can still qualify. But with him coming back to play and reach the 62 games played, and presumably playing in the playoffs, he might not meet the exact qualifications for the exception. The injury won’t exactly be season-ending anymore.

I think you need to make it games played OR minutes played. If you hit one of those thresholds you qualify, something like 65 games OR 2000 minutes. For someone like Cade who averages almost 35 minutes a game he plays in, he’s already cleared that 2000 minute threshold with roughly 2074 minutes. It’s keeping the with the anti-load-managing spirit of the rule while not punishing players like Cade or even Luka that have injuries like this. Across an 65 game stretch it’s something like 30 minutes a game, which as an alternative floor per game seems rather reasonable. It would also likely reduce the need for or even eliminate these ticky-tacky exception rules for players that get close

I had a full lung collapse about 8 years ago, had a chest tube put in. When I was discharged I was told not to pick up anything over 20lbs for 3 weeks while the wound healed. But right after those 3 weeks I was doing everything again (I was breakdancing)

They could adjust it to be like either 65 games or the equivalent of 65 games at 35 minutes/game or something (adjust numbers as is appropriate). I think Cade, if I recall, has played notably more minutes than a number of individuals who will meet the game requirement.

It’s one of those things that usually wouldn’t be relevant, but when it is relevant it might be reasonable.

I personally might switch it to 60-62 games anyway.

Though I’m personally not necessarily opposed to some type of rule, as load management is a way, way bigger thing than in the past, and I’m sympathetic to the idea that people pay a lot of money to see these players play, and it’s frustrating that people are held out for nothing more than ‘let’s rest’ basically.

The impact caused some small air to escape his lung and create a small pocket of air which does not allow the lung to inflate to 100%.

Usually that injury is paired with fractured ribs, but his did not. It’s as minor of a collapsed lung as you can get.
