[Murray] JJ Redick on Deandre Ayton: “He hasn’t been able to catch the ball”
Yeah he isn’t getting extended long term
That was an option?
He can possibly find a tanking team, if not…I heard they hire in other countries.
I hear Brazil is nice this time of year
a rich 7’ athlete in brazil? yeah he’ll be aight lmao
Inb4 robbed and murdered
yeah but the booty
I hear Chicago needs a center
He has a player option.
He will take it if he hates the Lakers lol
Would love for Nick Richards to make his way to the purple n gold
They probably hiring in the office too, might suit his tempo more
Time to get Super Duolingo
Ni hao
Sadly, it’s likely he’s picking up his player option. Rob Pelinka special.
Contract year, baby.
The second part of the Pelinka special is “as an expiring there’ll be opportunities to use such contract to keep our optionality at the maximum” and yet always choosing the option of never moving the stiff and waiting for the contract to expire anyway.
Yeah Luka lost trust on him early in the season due to being unable to catch the ball, both on alley oops and in the post. It’s why he doesn’t get fed as much.
It looks like Mark Williams is having his healthiest season ever. Huh.
Ayton: “First they want me to play the Clint Capela role. Now they want me to catch the ball!”
The trainers should do like his water bottle, write “Catch me!” on the game ball.
Lakers employees contractually have to call basketballs “Dominayton’s crunk balls”
Could they hypnotize him into thinking the ball is a big bag of weed?
JJ knows he’s outta there come summer so he’s taking all the shots he can to him, deservingly so.
Between Ayton, Josh Jackson, Dragon Bender, Marquisse Chriss, and Alex Len… Well, you learn that typically a player sucks if you make excuses for them 24⁄7.
I used to humiliate myself bragging about how great Ayton is when he “tries hard,” then proceed to watch other team’s centers, for whom effort is a non-negotiable. I’d let him convince me he was going to turn things around when he’d do his 4-time-per-year quote to the media about how he was going to play better. I’d even let his week-long stretches of not being total ass delude me.
But still, even when I’ve sobered to all of this, I still cannot fathom how he went from that insane finals run to… This. He should just go play overseas somewhere where he can sleepwalk into double-doubles and, I guess, contribute to winning basketball against worse competition.
I attended the 2018 draft and applauded the selection, I didn’t anticipate how badly things would go.
Procrastinayton
Fun fact, Ayton’s production fell off a cliff and never recovered around the same time there was a national Adderall shortage. He couldn’t get his meds and that was it.
That’s just garbage logic. If I could get it at the pharmacy no way he couldn’t.
He kept getting distracted and forgetting to pick up his refill
And then dropped it when they handed him the bottle
Medicayton
Feel his production was inflated by cp3
The quotes are the most infuriating part about Ayton. He plays a good game, then gives an interview with a perfect sound bite that fools you into believing in him for another month.
Like he’ll drop 28 points with a poster dunk and 8 FTA and go “I’m the biggest and tallest guy on the court, I should be doing that every night. My teammates do a good job at hounding me to play aggressive in the paint. I know if I stay locked in on defense and play hard, the touches will come on the other end. We got stars on offense, my role is to be a star on defense.”
And then he just fucking doesn’t do any of those things. Next game he’ll have 12 and 6 on 6⁄10 shooting, all middies, while falling asleep on defense.
Fuck Sarver forever bro.
Should have gotten Luka. WHY HIRE HIS COACH IN THE FIRST PLACE YOU FOOL
I never understood why we didnt nab Luka + Capela that offseason. Would have gotten us into the playoffs in like a year. Mad stupid.
Book would fit well with Doncic as well. Ya’ll would probably have a chip if you drafted Luka
The coach got hired before the lottery, it never had anything to do with the pick.
My biggest worry for Chet was him regressing Ayton style after being paid. Thankfully even though his offense still has more to be desired he’s still a monster on the defensive end.
I’d say that its hard to do that on a contender, but then I remember Ayton quit on the Suns during a playoff run next to KD, Booker and CP3.
Chet just seems to lack confidence offensively, but he also gets iced out sometimes. He’ll hit like 2 nice shots in a row and then not take another for the rest of a quarter.
Well turns out Monty was right about him
What being a Suns fan does to a mf
Not ideal for your coach to say this
I mean…not ideal for your center to not Catch the ball
I don’t think people who don’t watch the lakers realise how many of Luka’s turnovers is Ayton fumbling the pass
He’s trying to hurt Ayton’s feelings enough that Ayton doesn’t pick up his player option.
Ayton is numb at this point
He tried to be the good cop toward Ayton for the first couple of months but I think he hit his limit and now he’s just calling it out for what it is. Dude has Kwame Brown-esque hands.
Doesn’t matter how good the pass is, you give it to him in traffic or with a defender on him he’s fumbling the ball.
They can say what everyone with eyes can see.
Not ideal to suck ass either but whatreyagonnado
I love that r/nba is defending Reddick for saying this publicly while Doc was mocked for telling players to stop being selfish on the court in private.
It just shows no one has actual views, other than good coach=always good, bad coach=always bad.
Edit: And yes, Doc is awful and should be fired. But people just refuse to call out good coaches for bad behavior, even if it’s understandable. Nothing is gained by calling him out in public.
I think it’s a bit of liking redick and a bit of disliking Ayton
First they try to make him Clint Capela and now they’re trying to make him Ivan Rodriguez.
“they’re trying to make me Johnny Fucking Bench out there”
JJ criticized Doc Rivers for blaming his players yet here he is doing exactly that
And he’s right, mfs aren’t hooping across the entire NBA, and they’re blaming coaches.
Hard facts. How you going to blame the coach for putting in very little effort. Crazy as hell.
What are you trying to say? Is Ayton not to be blamed here? Lol
No? That’s not what that comment says. It’s pointing out the hypocrisy.
Doc sucks because he throws his players under the bus when it’s clear he is as much to blame for their failures/incompetence.
JJ isnt throwing Ayton under the bus when this has been his problem since being in the league. JJ has been, in his short coaching career, been doing well despite the clearly flawed personnel he’s manning.
Hayes unironically should be starting again because he and Luka have better chemistry.
None of that isn’t true, but it still doesn’t make JJ’s comments not hypocritical. Nobody is saying what he said isn’t true.
don’t do it in public?
Meh. Ayton deserves to get called out lol.
Im sure theyve done all kinds of treatment with him, babying him and such and it has been up and down.
but that wasn’t what your original argument was saying
if you said “is ayton not to be blamed, after repeated chances to change and improve?”
then yes i would i agree
no?
Then you havent watched him his whole career lol
JJ likes to run his mouth. It goes back to when he said Bob Cousy played with farmers and shit, to put an example.
The guy doesnt know that he has a right to stay quiet if he is not going to say something useful.
Nah that whole shit was blown out of proportion he went into detail about how older players didn’t have the spare time and training and health regimens that current players have, and that makes the current players more individually skilled with a honed craft and of course over time evolved the game. A lot of older players were working actual day jobs and basketball was the hobby they got paid for. He wasn’t wrong. IIRC Bob Cousy had a day job as a salesman.
Edit: To add more context I think the most specific thing I remember him saying was that a lot of players didn’t shoot well from the field back then and players like Cousy would dribble the ball in a way that the modern-day player would be baffled by because it would be easy to just snatch the ball from them. Something that children are taught today when it comes to guarding their dribble, not dribbling certain directions/angles with a certain hand, and keeping their dribble low - stuff they just didn’t do back then.
then the Logo responded: “Tell me what he did that determined games?” 🤣🤣
He started doing it pretty damn quickly when he became a coach. I think notably more than any coach in the league.
Yea he’s been fiery since day 1. Its an awful situation personnel wise but it does not come off well when you’re not matching it with results
Tbf I’ll take a treat coach like JJ that’ll fire shit to the media that keeps my team interesting and in the news while motivating players over a boring forgettable lackey who just says what he thinks he should
Yea I wasn’t trying to say that it’s bad necessarily bc we just saw how they were rolling a week ago
JJ is from the Doc Rivers coaching tree, never forget.
It’s not blaming if it’s stating an obvious fact
Doc was stating obvious facts about JJ too
Kwame Ayton
Kwame wasn’t that bad like Ayton
Prime Kwame was worse in every way than any version of “Dominayton”.
We’re talking about a “generational big” who ended up averaging 10ppg and 7 rebounds in his best year lmao
Ayton plays like he never is expecting the ball to come to him and when it does hes caught by surprise and turns it over.
Frustrayton
that does seem problematic
Yes I would consider “being fucking trash” to be kind of a problem to yourself and others, for sure
Donimayton loading…
Error, out of memory
Donim?
Goneinayton
Not an important skill in basketball
What happen to the man in the mirror?
Seriously this man has trouble catching the ball it’s embarrassing
Better than clint capela surely
he never claimed to better than capela
Yeah, that’s a problem
lmao
Heh
DeAndre “Kwame Brown” Ayton
Lakers fan and this sub was eating the fuck out of ayton in December and people got downvoted for saying “just wait” LMAOO
Dominayton? More like Dropayton am I right?
Deandre Ayton on JJ Redick: “He hasnt been able to upload a podcast”
It sucks. DA is capable of playing high level basketball and generally speaking he’s elite at finishing and taking easy shots. But there’s this facet to his game where he doesn’t seem to care, or he’s stoned, or he’s just a few sandwich’s short of a picnic basket. Idk but having bad hands on the Rudy Gobert level should be punishable with jail time. How tf you okay this much basketball but missed fundamentals entirely?
Yet he’s shooting career-high percentages, and a career-high volume of shots near the rim, so he must be doing something right.
What’s the full quote? I’m going to go out on a limb and say there’s more context.
You’ve got to let Dominayton be Dominayton
At this rate, the Lakers would not think twice of signing Isaiah Thomas as their starting Center
You hear this in football but usually not in basketball.
Then YOU get him his Crunk Juice™️, JJ
Lakers were in high spirits a week ago but because of injuries and potential 1st round exit, JJ publicly beefing with his players now (Vando and Ayton) lmao
Please get this guy off my team ill get on my knees
Ahhhahhhahh, Lakers drama is the best.
Wild idea - maybe he can bring the ball up instead? If he can’t catch the ball to score or rebound, maybe he’s actually meant to be actively pushing it out of his hands - to the ground or to other players
Suns fans always wanted a version of him that could create for himself like this, but his dribbling is unfortunately as bad or worse than his rebounding and hands. Such a shame.
huh? if he cant rebound? wtf is he good for on the court then? he’s not Jokic to be pushing the ball down the court. they ask him to be a big body on the court and he cant even do that consistently.
Jokes, guys
