[Highlight] Jaylen Brown called for palming
Call this more often, please.
Gonna ban modern dribbling overnight. Most stars base their handles on borderline carries and palming.
Nothing borderline about it.
Small guards literally getting phased out of the league because anyone can ball handle now, which is a direct result of allowing egregious carrying
That and the pushoff, which advantages bigger players, since they can just shove guys to get separation and a shot off. With carrying and shoving, speed is no longer as important.
It’s kinda shitty since it reduces the diversity of player and playstyle. Smaller guards who could get anywhere they wanted and score or playmake is for me the most watchable player. Big man dunk hard or big wing shove-step back is so boring by comparison.
Watching older highlights and clips is refreshing. Moves just look clean as hell, you can see all the skill to pull these things off (within the limits of actual basketball). It’s not fun to watch players pull off nonsense moves. It’s like playing a game with cheat mode on. Maybe fun for the first few minutes, then it’s like, alright let’s go back to the normal game.
Highlight “sport”
allen iverson is who pushed carrying to be normalized. Like he is the number one guy
People getting desensitized to it because of all the non calls. I saw a clip of Embid doing a double step back 3 the other day, and called out that he was carrying the ball for the last 2-3 steps. The response was, it’s ok, most guards do the same thing.
even more egregious is the obvious travels that go uncalled. Seems like half the drives to the hoop are an extra full step and lots of pivot feet shuffling in post ups and it goes uncalled. I’ve kinda just accepted that as part of the modern game but I know it ain’t right.
What Embid did was essentially a travel. But I know what you mean. they let so much go no one knows the line of what a travel is anymore. Lots of extra hop steps, feet drags, etc.. it always looks off. Watching older highlights the moves are always clean as fuck.
Yeah it’s pretty bad. I have just kind of accepted it but I know some people like my dad just can’t even watch because all they see is the traveling that goes uncalled. The game has changed a lot in many ways of course so certain moves and rule changes have lead to other former infractions kind of just becoming part of the modern game. It is too bad but I guess it’s just the way the game is now.
Yea i started watching basketball again because of Curry. I’m not sure if I’ll keep watching when he retires. I’m ok with changes but it’s to the point where it’s not that fun to watch. It feels less like basketball and more, how can we get people to score more points? How can we keep bending the rules? It’s just not as fun watch how the NBA is evolving. Which is unfortunate because I do like how the game itself has evolved. For me it’s interesting to see how teams evolve strategy between the rim, midrange, and 3
Not essentially at all, it wasn’t a travel by NBA rules.
it wasn’t a travel by any rule lol. i realized that people didn’t watch the whole clip. they thought he didn’t dribble on the initial step forward
I got in a debate the other day about how if David Robinson was allowed to palm and carry, he would dribble like Giannis.
I think that’s pretty accurate honestly. He doesn’t get talked about as much these days but the admiral was really a freak athlete.
Even crazier was the fact he fit on a boat
He didn’t, though. Which is why he was basically given a desk job and allowed to end his naval service early.
I mean, obviously? Carrying isn’t a skill, it’s something that makes the game easier. Anyone can carry a basketball.
If it requires practice to do it effectively, it’s a skill. I’m not saying it’s good basketball but learning how to skirt the rules to get results is undeniably a skill.
I agree with that. But don’t think modern handles are a good example of that. I think the rules regarding dribbling have just not been enforced. Foul baiting and getting to the line is a much better example of using the rules to get results
It’s just too obfuscated what you can and cannot do. Like if you are a superstar and make good plays, you can also do things that would be called on an average player.
While Kyrie and AI are probably the most skilled ball handlers of all time, I wonder if any old school guards would be better if they were allowed to dribble with today’s reffing.
I mean yeah definitely. Cousy and Pistol Pete would be as good as anyone if they played with modern rules
AI carried all the time.
Edit: Kyrie does too, for that matter
AI is an old school guard :(
AI is the prototype of the modern guard
AIs rookie season they were letting him carry tf out the ball with his crossover. After that year they banned it or something and he stopped doing his patented crossover. If he played today he’d be crossing everyone.
John Stockton would still play like John Stockton
People always say shit like this but, like in this case, its way more egregious sometimes than others. The bad ones need called more often and the players would adapt
Not even borderline, it is just carrying
Don’t forget tap dancing travels
Don’t forget travels, illegal screens and flopping. Fucking third grade coaches made us play to the rules when we coulda just played football.
no, third grade coaches and refs are the guys on reddit who think threes are bad
Don’t forget the gathering to a gather before two more steps…kill some of that trash too.
KD is so bad with this tbh.
I mean, if we’re being honest, NBA hasn’t been “normal” basketball rule wise in like two decades.
Remember Steve Kerr crashing out over celts IT years back?
Fine by me. Do it.
It ain’t dribbling
PIstol Pete going to have to resurrect to get some decent handles in the Association of the call this routinely 😂
i’m pretty sure guys will adjust if they get called. they only manipulate the things they get away with. love pistol, he was elite for his era but dude barely dribbled even with his left. we don’t wanna see that, man.
I mean Kyrie Irving exists. Pistol Pete was great but let’s not forget that nba players have great handles some just palm the ball cuz it’s advantageous and hard to tell between that and a hesi if you aren’t looking for it explicitly because not every player can do that
Kyrie is great, absolutely, but he’s still palming all the time. It’s just part of the game these days. If they couldn’t, I imagine Kyrie (and Curry who is up there too) would need some time to get to the level Pete was at without palming just because, well, he couldn’t.
It also was a joke and not meant to be taken seriously, but it’s the internet so of course people are going to be literal beyond the point of fun.
I love Kyrie he’s my favorite player ever but he definitely does that shit a lot… Just like Kobe did
Kyrie palms the shit out of the ball though 😂
The audacity of them to call this on brown while ball is on the floor doing that only 100 times worse every single possession….
I think it’s the stutter step he did at the moment he was carrying that triggered the whistle. If he did it with a smoother motion it doesn’t get called. Rule of cool.
Yeah, it’s either palming or a travel.
Yep, should be called ~95+% of possessions until players fix this shit.
The NBA likes having these ‘rules’ that are never upheld that are broken on nearly every play. This makes it so if the refs need to ‘control’ the game they can choose when to call them, and those calls will always be technically correct, even if they are allowed for the rest of the game.
We see this all the time with ‘make-up’ calls. Never forget that NBA refs true job is not to uphold the rules, but to maintain the product.
I regret not saving it but there was a fan made stat website with a graph that showed the bigger the score discrepancy gets the more likely it is for the losing team to get freethrows/fouls. The refs somehow just love to call fouls on teams that have no reason to foul. This helps keep games closer to not be blowouts so it’s more interesting I guess
Ok, but also, the winning team gets lazier and puts in the bench players that need reps.
Basketball calls are so quick, they’re based on instinct, and yeah, I think the refs can be “flexible” clearly, I watched Michael Jordan get the benefit of the doubt. Definitely reputation and narrative influence the refs and maybe some outside considerations also.
100%, there’s palming/carrying this egregious nearly every possession in the NBA, and they almost never call it. KD carries on virtually every dribble. This is pretty much the NBA’s position on carrying: https://youtube.com/shorts/nwCKJRQZeE0?si=d1h_3em-wcjEGx5H
Yeah it makes for fancy looking moves, but it also makes defence nearly impossible. Bring back enforcement of carrying.
I remember a few years ago they were letting players get away with putting their hand under the ball on shot-fakes. Thankfully by the next season they nixed it because, yeah, there’s absolutely no way to defend that…
Especially if the rules say you can’t do that. Because then the defender is usually defending as if it’s not allowed. So, of course they will try to close the gap and close-out as soon as they see a player’s hand go under the ball during a live dribble.
That’s also part of the problem with a lot of this stuff (zero steps, egregious palming, barely enforcing pivots, extra steps on catches, moving screens).
Defenders are reacting according to what they they think the rules are. So, whenever someone circumvents them in a way that also undermines them, they’re inherently caught off-guard.
One of the main things you want to do as an on-ball defender is get a player to pick up their dribble and limit their movement/options.
If players can suddenly pick up the ball… and then un-pick up the ball… It changes your entire strategy.
Same thing with extra steps. The difference between knowing if a player you’re defending can take one, two, three, or even four more steps is the entire difference between your timing and everything else regarding how you contest/guard their shot or gather.
KD, Giannis, Ja Morant, Celtics IT back in the day, Jordan Poole, Lamelo, so many guys who carry or carried egregiously all the time. Some guys practically rely on it to be successful.
I don’t even care about it that much in the NBA but it has ruined pickup basketball
Half of those clips are completely legal
They can’t, half the games played wouldn’t provide any highlights for them to post.
LaMelo literally wouldn’t be able to play lmao
Jordan Poole started getting called for these his last season on the Warriors and he lost his go to move to the basket, making him so much easier to defend compared to the previous year
Carries, travels, moving screens, “gather step”, etc.
Guys will 1000% adjust and it’ll be just as creative
Call it when it is blatant or creating a distinct advantage for the player (ie. on crossovers).
I don’t think this one is particularly bad though, and seems a bit odd to make an example.
You want a whistle every possession?
yes please
The players would adjust.
Then change the rules
Yk they only called it because he’s been outspoken 😂 waiting on them to finally call a travel on sga
No, don’t. Why do you want to slow the game down even more?
Right?! It’s an odd whistle in today’s game cause they haven’t actually enforced it in forever.
On the other thread for the Lamelo carry, someone said when’s the last time you saw a carry call. Here’s your answer lmao
The lamelo one he was just casually dribbling though. He didn’t carry to create an advantage. Still a carry but I can see why the refs ignore one like that compared to this when brown hesitates and literally “carries” the ball while driving.
Basically every hesi is a carry though, they still never call it
yeah it’s like holding/false starts in the nfl. can call one every play, but half the time the one being fouled should be able to get around it and or it had zero impact on the play. reffing is hard but damn particular refs really get you thinking
Not if you keep your palm on the side of the ball instead of underneath it
That’s a pretty big “if”. Too many players can’t be bothered to do it right.
Gotta call them consistently. None of this “Well, specifically here I don’t think it was to out-dribble someone” nonsense.
Travel is a travel. It doesn’t matter if it’s “casual” lmfao
They had a referees only meeting
Probably would’ve helped if he didn’t travel and palm at the same time.
Both are allowed, but only one at a time….
Yeah these days you can get away with anything but that shit he just did looked like a 2k animation glitch.
me when I’m trying to be JB at the y
You can’t travel with a live dribble, palming is the reason it’s a travel.
Exactly, so many people don’t understand this. You can take 100 steps with a live dribble if your feet are fast enough. One of the first traveling rules is almost exactly what you wrote.
It was def the studder that made the ref call it. They almost never call a carry if it’s one fluid motion
Stutter, totally legal. There’s no number of steps you get on a dribble. So that’s irrelevant.
I think the point is he would’ve gotten away with the palm under the ball carry if he didn’t take the stutter steps
Yeah it just looked too unnatural . Refs will let it play on had brown just exploded to the rim in one movement
I remember, last season, Rudy Gobert got called for a travel on a fastbreak.
Redditors counted the steps, he didn’t travel. Refs just couldn’t process the magnificence of a Rudy Gobert fastbreak.
Tbf Rudy moves like a newborn giraffe.
Rule of cool.
This is more of a summer shit post, but could a player theoretically bounce the ball really high and take like 3 steps and still have it be a live dribble?
You can take 50 steps if you’re able. I have a push dribble where I’m taking multiple steps and then dribbling again. Float, as many steps as needed to get to my shot. If you bounce it high you’d be inviting someone to steal it. No need for that. I can throw the ball ahead and take as many steps as I want to go resume my dribble.
Not but only because you’re not allowed to dribble higher than your own shoulder.
You don’t even have to bounce the ball high. You’re just describing Giannis.
I was once reading the play-by-play data:
Giannis dunk. 2 sec possession. No one credited with an assist. How the fuck does that work? A bug in the play-by-play?
Giannis dunk. 2 sec possession. No one credited with an assist.
How the fuck does that work? A bug in the play-by-play?
Upon review:
Sideout. Giannis is the inbounder. One bounce. 3 steps, gathers the ball –> dunk.
Only break one law/rule at a time, this is rookie stuff Jaylen
this reminds me of those ig videos where guys try to convince you they invented a new move that they swear is not a travel
Thats that mdw basketball mfer. His videos are 100% just rage bait
No. If it’s a carry it’s not a travel. If it’s a travel, which this isn’t, it’s not a carry.
yeah its just called a hesi and gather step now
Never break the law while you’re breaking the law
This is literally a normal KD dribble for his whole career.
It’s how the entire league dribbles
KD gets his hand just as far under, but doesn’t let the ball sit like that while he takes a step. KD goes way under and then steps while his hand comes up. Both carries, though.
They want to slow the pace of the game down and save those soft tissue injuries? Call palming. Call carries. Call travels. Call moving screens. People are gonna look like plumbers again.
And stop calling bitch ass soft fouls.
I fucking wish they would.
I’ve seen worse underhand carries that are not called all the time.
Literally lamello in this game just casually walking around with the ball
Giannis in shambles
Giannis is the worst, imo.
Melo does this every other play
Literally the next play he did it twice! Lol. 😆
Every single guard does this a dozen times per game
Melo? When was the last game he played?
Lamelo ball
Nephews calling him Melo is an abomination
This happens at least 30 times a game. Please start calling all of them!
This is the jay walking of the NBA.
It’s technically against the rules, regularly broken and rarely enforced.
Either call it regularly or change the rules.
SGA would be benched though
Ball doing this all night :/
WTF I’ve seen way worse not called. If you’re going to start calling it, be consistent.
Yeah if we are going to start enforcing it then definitely don’t start with this. This isn’t bad by any means
This is why I laugh when people say guys now are more talented with more moves. Na they can just get away with 5 steps and 5 carries and 5 double dribbles each time they touch tbe ball.
I thought they forgot about this rule! Everyone does it. I am not crazy! I AM NOT CRAZY🤪
So ridic. On a night that you’re playing LaMelo 😂. Literally next possession he does worse, twice. That’s not a carry.
I mean, it is clearly a carry, it’s just that no one calls this a carry anymore.
I disagree. And agree that this isn’t a call, ever, in the league. I watch for it. Maybe once every 4 games LaMelo gets a carry call. Is he doing something different that one time? No. It’s just a bad call.
“A player who is dribbling may not put any part of his hand under the ball and (1) carry it from one point to another or (2) bring it to a pause and then continue to dribble again.” https://official.nba.com/rule-no-10-violations-and-penalties/#:~:text=A%20player%20who%20is%20dribbling%20may%20not%20put%20any%20part%20of%20his%20hand%20under%20the%20ball%20and%20(1)%20carry%20it%20from%20one%20point%20to%20another%20or%20(2)%20bring%20it%20to%20a%20pause%20and%20then%20continue%20to%20dribble%20again.
He has his fingers under the ball, and the ball comes to a complete stop. It’s a carry by both points from the rule book.
But this happens like 200 times per nba game. They don’t call the game to the rules as written.
If only the NBA called carrys and travels more often
Yes it’s palming, but the whole league should be called all the time for this.
This needs to be called like all the time
very sharp call by ref. why can’t they do more of this in game
keep calling it! but i think its more the tippytaps during the palming that gets it called. the palming alone is ignored a lot.
I can’t remember who it was but someone said IT carried every single possession lol
OH SO IT’S STILL A RULE
my only problem with this, is that this isn’t called out as a violation more consistently.
Refs trying to get Char back in the game or something?
If you call this, you gotta call it every single time
That was egregious he took 5 steps before putting the ball back down
A legit call
this is the shit that sucks the most in the whole nba. stuttering your feet with the ball under your hand is a fucking triple threat whenever you want it. it’s not basketball and it’s sucking away at the beautiful game. no need to pass when you can drive the lane like a wide receiver running a slant without having to put the ball to the wood until you’re halfway to the rim.
SGA CARRIES THE WHOLE SEASON THO
nahh that travel was crazyy though, that was like 4-5 steps
Downvote but you’re being educated! 😂 Steps don’t count while dribbling.
Wrong. You don’t count steps on a dribble. Just like skips aren’t steps. Or float. Step as many times as you like.
Good call
Everyone carries and travels in today’s NBA
Crazy how they call some players and let other do whatever they want.
They could call this 200 times a game if they wanted to. It was 100 percent palming, but it never gets called, really weird that it was called there.
Feel like I haven’t seen this called out since the AI days
I’d pay good money to watch a game with the dribble rules called consistently and correctly. At least $5.
What ever happened to double dribbles
That’s what they called, a carry, which in this case is a discontinued dribble, or double.
ball is completely stopped and not spinning. Clear carry. Not even a borderline case here.
I actually wanna if these stars (Shai included before you fuckers gang up) change their style and still be the star they are now if refs start calling things by book.
Are there any other sports that have as much inconsistencies in reffing as the NBA?
First thing, this cost to playoffs I never want to see “[Highlight] Jaylen Brown…”. Damn near gave me a heart attack.
Second, this is pretty much every dribble I’ve seen in the NBA in the last decade. If you side-by-side this with any other play and asked which was called a carry, it’d be a random guess. Personally, I hope this gets called way more often because letting these guys carry makes the game impossible for defenders.
It’s that time of the regular season where referees try out calls before the playoffs just to see how they could eff with players in the future.
Don’t worry, JB. Hot Sauce would be proud.
NBA has become unwatchable
He definitely did too😭😭
I mean
Lamelo would never score again
Isn’t this basically the test to determine if the NBA actually considers you a superstar?
That’s every Lamelo and Haliburton play. Gtfo ref
Tbf that was really long
Oof JB, wish they’d call this more. See it a ton with players.
Man, the NCAA Championship had some blatant palming. I’m glad it’s been called at least once at NBA level.
Honestly - if the ball stops moving that’s when it should get called - this is a perfect example of the right call; but just barely.
Anything less than this no call - anything more blatant call.
This should be the bar.
Started dribbling on the 5th step. Is that the limit before it’s called? 😂
I didn’t see shit and you are all liars
Refs in the nba are so weirdly inconsistent. Like we call this for the first time basically all season lol but then embiid over there taking a 12 step step back like it’s just normal ball right in front of the refs and nothing. This shit is so weird to watch nowadays. How bout call every obvious call. They miss a 100 a night but that’s all good. Lol at least they got one I guess.
isn’t that cause he shuffled 2 steps foward and travel at the same time?
He also took 4 steps while he was palming so at least they called something
At least he didn’t take 6 steps..
Like yes it is but this is a standard move and you can’t ignore it constantly and then call it randomly in the 4th. This is worse than not calling it. It’s randomly calling something you normally ignore
Scott Foster special
Ah hell no.
Jaylen Brown made a career off of dribbling like this, if the refs properly called it the Celtics would have him as a spot up shooter.
The commentators immediately referenced how silly it was, noting Lamelo was doing it immediately afterwards.
This happens all the time. They need to call it more often
I reckon they call this one because he does two stutter steps. Most hesi’s are a single stutter, but yeah this one was blatant
Thats not a carry. Thats a gather carry 🤣🤣
Don’t palm the ball for a millisecond but take as many steps as you want!! (As long as your an all-star).
Fucking finally. Now do it for everybody else.
He does this all the time
If they actually called this and things like illegal screens and travels consistently the product might become watchable.
I want the name of the ref so that he can get some praise.
JB is taking all of Shais moves
just another of the current crop of nba players who cant do the basic of basic basketball skills, like not traveling. how can this gen of players be better than guys from 20 years ago when they cant even dribble or attack the basketball w/out breaking the rules
Cuz they aren’t breaking the rules, the rules in the nba and norms change go watch bob cousy then go watch mj what mj was doing would’ve been a walk or palm in cousys era
Being half a foot taller, more athletic, and way better at shooting
Brother, Lamelo is also playing in this game.
That ref will be reprimanded
Lmao yo what. This seems like a rival family called a hit on carries overnight? What is this
