I disagree. They always had this amount of leverage because he was always out, we knew this and the GMs knew this. They can smell the blood in the water and Giannis made it incredibly obvious. Now though, because they waited, more teams will be willing to make bold offers after coming up short. Mid season has never been the place to make a star deal. The off-season is where the market is actually in full swing and people will be willing to make non conservative moves. 10 bidders will net you a better offer than 4 bidders would.

Also, you’re severely underestimating how much chatter goes on between front offices if you don’t think everyone knew at the deadline the Bucks wanted to trade Giannis. They all talk to one another, but not everything they discuss gets leaked to the public

They’re 100% still going to get a desperate team to still pay as much as possible for him. I think a team like the HEAT will balk after having their package turned away, or at least won’t offer more.

We don’t have the picks in the near future but I could see us giving up a majority of our younger players and whatever picks/swaps possible for him.

The only leverage they need is multiple teams being interested, which they’ll have. When trading a superstar it doesn’t matter how toxic the team situation is because they’re a limited quantity that every team knows they need to win a championship.

I get it tho. You only get a player to the level once in franchise existence for many small market franchises. They have no cap, few picks, and not much flexibility to pivot. I’d try everything I could to keep him until you just can’t if I were them too.

Nah. He just isn’t a good fit for this roster, our shooting isn’t great, and this is the kind of trade that would make us lose all of our flexilbity. We’d prob even have to trade every pick from 2030 to 2034 just to get some actual spacing around him.
